Designating Election Day as a university holiday is important in increasing voter turnout and promoting civic engagement among students, faculty, and staff at Binghamton University. On-campus polling sites and early voting have both helped in this endeavor but fall short of allowing students the proper time to vote. 47% of college students cite being too busy as their primary reason for not voting. Having Election Day designated as a university holiday would free students of the time constraint of having to attend hours of classes on Election Day. In 2019, New York amended the Paid Voting Leave Law to allow voters to take up to three hours from work to cast their ballot on Election Day. Still, no provision exists allowing students time off from class to vote. The University of Montana is closed on Election Day in even-numbered years, and in New York, Columbia University treats Election Day as a university holiday with the cancelation of all classes. Making Election Day a state and national holiday is already a legislative priority at the state and federal levels for many lawmakers. Binghamton University could be at the forefront of this movement by designating Election Day as a university holiday. While the university already cancels classes for a number of holidays meant for observation, cancelling classes on Election Day would serve a practical purpose by allowing the Binghamton University community the opportunity to exercise their right to vote. Once the worst of the pandemic is over and it is considered safe to travel, there will be a tremendous backlog of people applying for passports and renewals. This will hurt the travel industry even more than it is hurting right now, not only here, but all over the world. Also, many people have to travel on business. Many of them can't work remotely.

The coronavirus has caused major problems for indigenous peoples. Because of treaties, the Federal government is responsible for protecting the health and safety of American Indians and Alaskan natives. I;m a concerned citizen who cares about these people, and what he's doing is a felony. The Hospital staff is scared of dying due to The Corona virus, and the hospital staff members walked out of the hospitals and protested that they medical supplies and equipment real bad, and Donald Trump lied that there's a low supply of it until The news media showed that Donald Trump has lied to us and there's stock piles of medical supplies and medical equipment in the ware house, and won't let the hospitals have them right away that'll cause more deaths against the patients and the staff. Which is illegal, and it's a felony!

I live on a golf course and see people daily who ignore the social distancing guidelines. I contacted our golf club's manager and was told all they can do is recommend safety measures and that the golf course cannot enforce these safety measures. I was also told that they had no plan to shut down in the future and would stay open, basically, because they could. Golfers are sharing golf carts and congregating in close proximity to each other at tee boxes and on the greens in clear violation of all that we have been instructed to do by the CDC and by our own governor. People who ignore social distancing recommendations are a health risk to us all. Since the golf courses themselves will not enforce, they must be shut down. The people and businesses who ignore social distancing and stay at home orders are irresponsible and short-sighted as is our Governor who has given his blessing to this. We are further at risk because the golf courses are open. Shut them down and save lives.

We need to be able to make voting easier and more secure, especially during this public health crisis. The long lines that have plagued recent elections, as well as the touch screens and crowded polling places, are now dangerous. We cannot let the pandemic shrink voter turnout. In addition, voting by mail provides a paper trail at a time when election security is increasingly at risk. While several states have already expanded their vote-by-mail options, we would like to see every state — and the federal government — pass vote-by-mail legislation so that all citizens, no matter where they live, can safely vote in November of this year.

Many more Iowans will get sick and thousands more will die while the governor fiddles.

First Responders, Physicians, Nurses and all support staff are being exposed to psychological trauma as they respond to patients with Covid-19. Every day they face multiple traumatizing experiences: inadequate medical supplies making it impossible to render the care they were trained to deliver, personal physical danger, relentless hours, separation from their families and in some cases having to make desperate moral choices about which patient receives treatment. They have not been prepared for this onslaught, level of exhaustion and depletion. The authorities have not seen fit to provide training on handling extreme stress nor have the authorities seen fit to offer stress debriefing which has been shown to lessen the damaging effects of trauma. Our first responders and healthcare workers are suffering psychological and moral wounding as they try to save us. Past studies after SARS demonstrate that a significant percentage of them will develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result. This will likely be debilitating for many of them, their families and will impact our entire healthcare system. We can do better. We can back up the people who are putting their well-being on the line for us by demanding they be provided with well researched on-site training and support. Tell Alex Azar to stop taking advantage of our sisters and brothers who are trying to take care of the desperately ill. Statement Re Detained Asylum Seekers at the Port Isabel Detention Center, Texas We are writing to express our grave concern about the ongoing detention of numerous asylum seekers in the ICE Port Isabel Detention Center, Los Fresnos, Texas. The great majority of these persons have never committed a crime. Moreover, they have families with legal status here in the United States who are eager to take them in while their immigration cases are processed. Prior to this administration, release of these migrants to their families would have been routine. These asylum seekers are now in danger of contracting the Corona Virus, or Covid-19, and suffering severe illness and even death. They must be released to family and friends forthwith. Keeping them in long term, unjustified detention under these conditions is the moral equivalent of locking them into a burning building. Hygienic conditions and medical care at this facility are shocking even during the best of times. The conditions are now unconscionable. The asylum seekers do not receive soap, only small packets of shampoo in the morning. Soap they must purchase on their own through the commissary if they can. The guards, arriving from their homes, walk in and out of the dormitories without gloves or masks, and go from one dorm to the other in this manner throughout the day. There are 70 men to a dormitory so social distancing is impossible. The men also eat in their dorms, with food workers bringing in the food trays, with gloved hands but no masks. There are four toilet bowls in each dorm, standing out in the open without any screens. These are cleaned in the morning and evening, but no cleaning materials are available in between. These conditions fly in the face of the precautions we are all required to respect. Many of the detainees have serious health problems. It is a matter of time until the virus strikes, and the results will be devastating. We know that the detainees have brought these concerns to the facility’s officers, but to no avail. The detainees also initiated a hunger strike on Monday, March 30, 2020. We understand that there is a grave risk of retaliation and intimidation should it continue. We demand that all migrants in the Port Isabel Detention Center be immediately released to their friends and family unless they have a criminal record clearly indicating a danger to society. I am the Reverend Dr. Daniel Schlorff, advocate for voters' rights and ballot access activist for over 20 years. While I have agreed to run for CT State Representative (HD90, Wallingford and Cheshire), I'm also concerned that the voters of my district as well as voters all across the state will have to choose between risking sickness during this pandemic vs. not being able to exercise their voice in this year's election cycle. Several states have already successfully enacted a vote-by-mail program, including Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Utah, California, and Hawaii -- and these states are seeing a higher voter turnout as a result. That's why I'm asking you and all voters of Connecticut to help me tell Governor Lamont and Secretary Merrill that the voters of Connecticut want an executive order and enactment of a universal vote-by-mail program instead of the in-person Primary Election scheduled for June 2, 2020. Furthermore, should either the State or Federal governments not issue an all-clear in advance of the General Election on November 3, 2020 , we will once again urge them to enact the universal vote-by-mail program, to continue until all voters are safe to leave their homes and enter the voting booths without extreme risk. In the midst of the health and economic problems currently facing our country, our military people who are brave enough to serve do so deployed in forward areas. It is the individual Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine who forms the basic unit of our national defense. Our servicemembers who serve, do so depending on the officers assigned above them. Their lives depend on those officers entrusted with their care. In reciprocal fashion, commanders cannot fulfill their objectives if their personnel are inadequately supplied, or have medical concerns. A commanding officer is completely ineffective without operational personnel. Navy Captain Brett Crozier acted expediently to garner attention to the medical needs of his crew. We respectfully demand proper attention be given to Captain Crozier's crew, to absolve Captain Crozier of any wrongdoing in seeking prompt medical attention for his crew, and to initiate an investigation into the competency of those who would place blame of Captain Crozier instead of initiating immediate action to provide medical supplies and replacement crew members in the most expedient fashion. Ironically, Acting Navy Secretary Modly said, “Capt. Such consideration could be a giant leap toward restoring the US Navy's great example of military strength.
