• Stop the Animal Brutality in Para, Brazil
10,000 signatures needed! Please join VVSA Humane Society in Bridgewater, VT in protesting the actions of Brazilian Mayor Marcelo Pamplona who used spay/neuter funds as bounty for the slaughter of dogs in his city: $2.50 per male dog, $5.00 for females. In this impoverished area, it is enough to have caused the needless suffering and brutal deaths of hundreds of animals at this time. There are still dogs on a nearby island, that are slowly being starved to death. For pictures of the dogs and rescuers, go to: http://vvsahs.org/article_details.php?IID=50 (More articles and info at: http://vvsahs.org.)

  • Productivity, not Permits
For at least six years, all sectors of the Hayward Community have been asking for solutions to improve the downtown area. There is a perception that litter, public nuisances, and other issues are related to outdoor meal programs, although evidence does not generally support this connection. Now, the City is proposing a new permitting process which would allow outdoor meal programs to continue, albeit subject to highly restrictive conditions. Encroachment permitting and other statues already exist in Hayward. Instead, it is time for a centralized center which promotes efficient, productive solutions and moves meals and services out of public spaces.

  • Mayor Gimenez: Keep the Model City Library OPEN
The Mayor of Miami-Dade County introduced his proposed budget for 2013-2014, which froze the millage at its current rate. Subsequent cuts to public services were proposed to include the closing of the Model City Library in Brownsville, Miami-Dade County, FL. This library serves an area where poverty is raging. The library serves a predominantly low-income community and is one of the largest and busiest libraries in the County. Closing this library will cause direct, adverse impact on scores of children and families who can not afford a computer nor access to quality reading materials. The Model City Library is also an EARLY VOTING PRECINCT. This library needs to remain open in order to give these children a fighting chance at a decent education and to ensure that the ability to vote at this site is in place for next year's vital election cycle.

  • Federal Government Save Yarnell Hill Fire Survivors
The village of Yarnell was devastated by wildfire on June 30, 2013. Half the town burned and 19 firefighters lost their lives. Charitable organizations showed immediate compassion with bottled water, food, sandbags, and volunteers to sift ash. But our own government has denied us funding to rebuild burned/damaged water lines--one of life's most basic necessities.

  • Rick Scott: Fully fund Ryan White Care Act in Florida
Rick Scott and the Florida Legislature cut desperately needed funding for services to people living with HIV/AIDS. These cuts have placed great hardships on those who counted on this help to buy life-saving medications and payment of co-pays for medical care. Many of these people are having to choose between eating and taking their medications. We call on Rick Scott and the FL Legislature to increase funding for these vital services.

  • Flood Insurance Rates Skyrocket!
FEMA has drastically changed the flood Insurance Program. Rates are increased 25% for a minimum of 5 yrs in some areas. Areas never affected by flooding have been mandated to carry cost prohibitive flood insurance. This will create havoc causing housing prices to decline and many homeowners will face foreclosure. This is definitely true in my neighborhood. I stand to lose everything.

  • Supervisor Miley: Install Warning Lights at Lake Chabot Crosswalk
I am concerned for my safety, and the safety of others, when crossing Lake Chabot road in the crosswalk, in front of Lake Chabot Park. Cars speed when driving on Lake Chabot road, and often do not stop when someone is in the crosswalk. This has happened to me, others I know. I understand a woman was hit by a car this past June, and later died of her injuries.
