In 2012 Disney Pixar released "Brave", giving fans and families a truly daring and adventurous heroine who was a welcome break from the long-standing Disney Princess brand. For a family like mine, concerned about gender stereotypes and sexualization in childhood, Merida was the princess we had been waiting for. To our dismay, Disney has given Merida a very adult-looking makeover, along with the other princesses. By sexualizing Merida, Disney is sending the message to kids everywhere that being a princess isn't about being brave, it is about being pretty.

Sexual violence in the U.S. military is a crisis. The Pentagon estimates that sexual assaults increased from 19,000 in 2011 to 26,000 in 2012. That's 71 sexual assaults EVERY DAY, and in roughly 56% of cases, the victims are men. Making matters worse, each branch of the armed forces has its own judicial system. It's currently legal for base commanders to overturn a jury's guilty verdict, as happened at Aviano Air Force Base in February 2013. The STOP Act takes the prosecution, reporting, oversight, investigation, and victim care of sexual assaults out of the normal military chain of command -- which has proven grossly ineffective -- and places jurisdiction in an autonomous Sexual Assault Oversight and Response Office. I couldn't believe it when I saw a promo for a new History Channel show called "Chasing Tail" which is a common term for men in search of sexual favors with the "tail" being a female body part. The promo shows Red Necks with rifles hunting "White Tail Deer". I am insulted as a women that the History Channel is using this slur as the title for yet another show celebrating Red Neck Culture. Demand that they either change the title or take the show off the air.

The Violence Against Women Act works to protect individuals from domestic violence. It funds services and education programs that prevent and address those affected by this issue.

According to estimates from the Department of Defense, 19,000 service men and women are sexually assaulted while serving in the United States Military every. But 86% of them never report their assault—too often because seeking justice threatens their safety, their job security, and their future. It’s time to take action and ensure survivors of Military Sexual Assault are not invisible and receive the justice they deserve. Congress must amend the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and move the prosecution of Military Sexual Assault out of the chain of command. Survivors should not suffer retribution for speaking up, and rape should never be an “occupational hazard.” Only Congress can change the UCMJ to create a real, working system for prosecuting sexual predators in the military – and ultimately putting an end to Military Sexual Assault.

In 2013, women still earn only 77 cents for every dollar a man earns and the amount is even lower for African-American and Latina women. Over a lifetime, the gender wage gap adds up to over $480,000 in wages that are denied to a woman who is doing exactly the same work as a man. Women could use this money to pay the mortgage, to buy the groceries, to fill the gas tank, even to put kids through school. The Paycheck Fairness Act (S.84 & H.R.377) will strengthen current laws by: • Prohibiting retaliation against workers who inquire about employers’ wage practices or disclose their own wages; • Strengthening penalties for equal pay violations; • Empowering women to negotiate for equal pay; • Strengthening education and enforcement efforts; • Creating stronger incentives for employers to follow the law. We all know that women deserve equal pay for equal work. Equal pay would help close the wage gap, boost the national economy and increase women’s economic security. As Equal Pay Day approaches on April 9th, marking the day in the year that a woman’s earning will match what a man earned in the previous year, there is no time better than now to stand up for women and families. Ask President Obama, your state legislators, and the Alaska Congressional delegation (Lisa Murkowski, Mark Begich, and Don Young), and Governor Parnell to remove the Alaska tribal exclusion and require all states and tribes to honor all civil domestic violence protection orders! Tribes in Alaska should not be treated differently from tribes outside of Alaska.
