  • Sexist History Channel Show "Chasing Tail"
I couldn't believe it when I saw a promo for a new History Channel show called "Chasing Tail" which is a common term for men in search of sexual favors with the "tail" being a female body part. The promo shows Red Necks with rifles hunting "White Tail Deer". I am insulted as a women that the History Channel is using this slur as the title for yet another show celebrating Red Neck Culture. Demand that they either change the title or take the show off the air.

  • Raped in the U.S. Navy: Protect Survivors of Military Sexual Assault
According to estimates from the Department of Defense, 19,000 service men and women are sexually assaulted while serving in the United States Military every. But 86% of them never report their assault—too often because seeking justice threatens their safety, their job security, and their future. It’s time to take action and ensure survivors of Military Sexual Assault are not invisible and receive the justice they deserve. Congress must amend the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and move the prosecution of Military Sexual Assault out of the chain of command. Survivors should not suffer retribution for speaking up, and rape should never be an “occupational hazard.” Only Congress can change the UCMJ to create a real, working system for prosecuting sexual predators in the military – and ultimately putting an end to Military Sexual Assault.

  • Senator Kirk Stand Up for Equal Pay!
In 2013, women still earn only 77 cents for every dollar a man earns and the amount is even lower for African-American and Latina women. Over a lifetime, the gender wage gap adds up to over $480,000 in wages that are denied to a woman who is doing exactly the same work as a man. Women could use this money to pay the mortgage, to buy the groceries, to fill the gas tank, even to put kids through school. The Paycheck Fairness Act (S.84 & H.R.377) will strengthen current laws by: • Prohibiting retaliation against workers who inquire about employers’ wage practices or disclose their own wages; • Strengthening penalties for equal pay violations; • Empowering women to negotiate for equal pay; • Strengthening education and enforcement efforts; • Creating stronger incentives for employers to follow the law. We all know that women deserve equal pay for equal work. Equal pay would help close the wage gap, boost the national economy and increase women’s economic security. As Equal Pay Day approaches on April 9th, marking the day in the year that a woman’s earning will match what a man earned in the previous year, there is no time better than now to stand up for women and families. Tell Senator Kirk to sign on as a co-sponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act today!

  • Include Alaska Natives in the Violence Against Women Act
Please join us in support to end domestic violence against Alaskan Native women, children, and families. Ask President Obama, your state legislators, and the Alaska Congressional delegation (Lisa Murkowski, Mark Begich, and Don Young), and Governor Parnell to remove the Alaska tribal exclusion and require all states and tribes to honor all civil domestic violence protection orders! Tribes in Alaska should not be treated differently from tribes outside of Alaska.

  • Pull Rick Ross and Lil Wayne from Radio Rotation
The questions have been asked, Is Hip Hop Music Destroying America, Is Hip Hop A Threat To Our Children or Should Rappers Be Accountable For Their Lyrics? You be the judge. Earlier this year the song “Karate Chop” leaked online featuring rapper Lil Wayne. He raps, “Bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels/Beat that (expletive/woman genital) up like Emmett Till.” A few weeks later a song by rapper Rocko featuring Rick Ross was release called “You Don’t Even Know It.” Rick Ross raps, “Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.” Yes, we have our freedom of speech right, but when is freedom of speech taken too far? Many would say both rappers have taken their lyrical content too far and offended too many. The family and estate of Emit Till have released a statement of disapproval over Lil Wayne’s disregard and disrespectful lyrics. Though his record label issued a statement of apology, the rapper has yet to do so. In the case of Rick Ross, his blatant disregard for women and advocacy of date rape. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that over 300,000 women are raped or sexually assaulted per year in the United States alone. That is a disturbing number and should not be taken lightly. His lyrics not only condone the behavior, but he boasts about it in the song. While some feel it’s only entertainment, many feel it sends and encourages the wrong message. Several individuals and organizations have taken a stand and so are we. Effective immediately, we are requesting WHHH 96.3 to pull ALL music from Rick Ross and Lil Wayne from ROTATION! While we believe in freedom of speech, creative writing and individualism, we refuse to be part of the problem by spreading messages that could harm or end someone’s life.

  • HEY TILTED KILT: Our Kids Don't Need To See Your Half-Naked Lady-Banners Outside!
What if you were driving past your local shopping center with your young child and happened upon a 20-ft. photo banner with a scantily clad woman on it? It's a common marketing practice for Tilted Kilt, and for the sake of kids everywhere, let's tell them to change their policy nationwide. Tell the Tilted Kilt that our young girls have enough nasty messaging coming their way telling them they are nothing more than objects for men to look at. Our young boys have enough lurid messaging interfering with their abilities to see women as people and have successful relationships. Tilted Kilt has a right to operate their business, but we have a right to enjoy public space without telling our kids to close their eyes. Please sign now!

  • Change the U.S. Military's "Rape Culture"
The Pentagon estimates that more than 1 in 4 women who join the military will be sexually assaulted during their careers, while 14% of assaults will go unreported. Many assaults are not reported because of the widely known lax attitude towards rape and women are afraid they will be forced out of service, while their rapists are protected and move up in rank. As a woman, I am appalled and disgusted by what is known as the military's "rape culture."

  • Victoria's Secret: Stop Objectifying Teen Girls!
Victoria’s Secret’s new “Bright Young Things” campaign brings sexual objectification to middle schoolers – it’s a line of provocative clothing and lingerie expressly aimed at teen and tween girls. Stuart Burgdoerfer, CFO of Limited Brands, which owns Victoria’s Secret, says of young girls, “They want to be older, and they want to be cool like the girl in college, and that’s part of the magic of what we do at Pink.” This is not magic – this is using the distortion of young women’s body image and insecurity as a source of profit. There are a variety of things teenage girls “want to be” — safe, respected, encouraged, valued, to name a few. Join with Sojourners and call on Victoria’s Secret and Limited Brands to end this campaign against the self-worth of women and girls by sending a message to their communications team and board of directors.
