• Ask Governor Kate Brown to join the Climate Alliance
It is appalling that our president has chosen a short-sighted policy of climate change denial in the face of urgent need for action to avoid irreparable damage to our planet. Thoughtful people agree that meaningful action to prevent harm to our planet will need to be local, as we cannot rely on our national government to act. Please join me in asking Governor Brown to join with New York, Washington state, and California in honoring the goals of the Paris climate agreement with local action!

  • Stop 15-21 Unit Multifamily, High-Density Housing Development at First Baptist Church Across from...
On Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at 7 pm the Monte Sereno City Council will hear public comments and then formally vote on whether to rescind their prior action to re-zone the First Baptist Church on Daves Avenue for multi-family housing. The council will decide whether to revoke the former council's decision from last year which zoned the church so as to allow the building of 15-21 high density, multi-family housing units. The meeting on June 6 comes after a citizen petition to revoke decision or put it the voters on a ballot was rejected by the city. That petition was then taken to court and the petitioners (The Monte Sereno Citizens for Sensible Development) won in court. Now the Council must either revoke the zoning decision on June 6, 2017, or put the zoning decision to the voters on the 2018 general election ballot. Last year's Council passed the zoning decision despite overwhelming citizen opposition. Citizens opposed the zoning change for many reasons: Perhaps most important because it would put children at risk by hugely increasing density and traffic right across the street from already-impacted Daves Elementary. The proposed development would have been extremely high-density packing as many as 21 units on a one-acre portion of the church property. Further, the zoning change would set Monte Sereno up for its own version of Los Gatos' "North 40" mess because the zoning change calls for "by right" development, meaning that when a developer eventually wants to develop the property, the citizens would have very little say in controlling the process. (It should also be noted, the church did not ask for and has opposed the zoning decision - the City didn't even listen to the landowner who does not want this zoning change.) The City has now wasted well over $100,000 on this matter, rejecting a qualified petition and fighting in court over technicalities. Because of the high cost putting a matter on the election ballot, the City stands to spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars more if the Council does not vote to revoke the prior, misguided zoning decision. This is money which could be much better spent finding real solutions to the housing issue, fixing our streets, and taking care of the citizens of Monte Sereno's real health and safety priorities. Please sign this petition AND plan to show up on June 6, 2017 at 7pm to the council meeting at Monte Sereno City Hall 18041 Saratoga-Los Gatos Road, Monte Sereno, to make your voice heard loud and clear: Zoning the First Baptist Church property to allow 15-21 units of high-density, multi-family housing is a terrible idea. Now is the time for our new, 2017 City Council to step up and reject that plan forever. The City is avoiding publicizing this critical meeting, so please be sure that your neighbors who may not be aware learn of this important meeting, sign this petition and plan to attend and speak.

  • Governor Rauner: work with Democrats to give Illinois a budget!
All entities in the State of Illinois who are supposed to receive state funds are being neglected because the state has had no budget for 2+ years! This includes schools, higher education, the sick, the poor, retirees, any disadvantaged. The legislators have tried but the governor just makes demands without negotiating.

  • Tell Governor Sununu to uphold the Paris Climate Agreement
Throughout the country, Governors and Mayors are making the pledge to continue to follow through with the targets proposed in the Paris Climate Agreement. They are also making clear that they want the United States to be the leaders in the international fight against climate change. Governor Sununu has publicly declared support for President Trump backing out of the Paris Climate Agreement. We deserve a representative who will take a progressive, common sense approach to this incredibly serious issue, not one who supports our President as he continues to endanger our future and our reputation internationally.

  • Tell Gov. Hickenlooper: Colorado must join the U.S. Climate Alliance
Colorado is home to incommensurable natural treasures. Our state thrives on its outdoors. It is part of its identity. And yet our legislators are still committed to an obsolete industry, oil and gas, that puts everybody in Colorado and the entire planet in danger. Our beautiful rivers, mountains and forest should be an absolute priority. Our children deserve to inherit a world full of animals, water, clean blue skies and trees.

  • Ask Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Legislature to publicly declare Alabama's support of the Paris ...
Climate change is one of the most tangible of all future endgame scenarios for humanity. Working to eliminate as much of humanity's impact on the climate of our one and only home planet only serves to help all humans, present and future, and the planet we are currently permanently bound to. Protecting one's home is not a partisan issue, and most of the world already understands the risk and has agreed to stand for change. I'm asking the political leaders of Alabama to show that despite the myriad of scandals and issues in the past, Alabama is prepared to look to the future, and ensure its greatness, for centuries to come.

  • Maintain Tumwater Hill Elementary student time schedule for 2017-2018.
Recently, the Tumwater School District decided to change the starting and ending time of Tumwater Hill Elementary School, our local school, with no input from parents of students! The newly imposed times will be changed from 9:05 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. currently, to 9:25 a.m. through 3:55 p.m. in the 2017-2018 school year. Current run-time for the school ensures our children will not be coming home in the dark - with the new start-up time, our children will be “in the dark” for much of the year, creating difficulties for many, safety problems for young students, and justifiable concern for parents. How will this impact students who ride the bus and arrive at the stop at 4:30 when is it completely dark? So far, the only “reason” District officials have provided concern the “efficiency” of the transportation division’s operation! No mention about how this will impact our local school community - indeed, Tumwater Hill Elementary is the only elementary school facing this imposition from the District administration of a late start of 9:25. No surveys of parents; no meetings for public input on the matter; no academic improvement or performance issues were raised. So the question is: just how will this help our children? Parents need to be involved in this kind of decision making! It is important that the families of students have a “hand” on that clock so their needs are being met through reasonable and appropriate hours and that any contemplated changes are related to the well-being of our children - both in their academic performance and their overall health and safety. Let’s work together on this - I’d like to hear what you think and ask that we, as parents, discuss the change before it goes forward. The next school board meeting is June 15.

  • Restorative Justice, Not Mass Incarceration
Those who have been working for decades on criminal justice reform and prison reform stand united in opposition to the Trump administration's plan to invest in mass incarceration for all offenders, non-violent and violent offenders, while ignoring the needs of crime victims and communities. Restorative Justice International, a national and global association, supports an investment in victims-driven restorative justice, which will recognize the needs of crime victims while holding offenders accountable. We are committed to moving forward, not backward.

  • CEOs: Protest Paris withdrawal by resigning from Trump's business council
You and/or your company have publicly supported the Paris climate agreement. Trump has now withdrawn. Tesla/SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has already resigned in protest, and you should follow his lead. As a business leader and public figure, you can step down from Trump's Business Advisory council and send a message to your customers, the US, and the world that despite Trump's shameful actions, the United States still understands that climate science is real and that action is urgently necessary.
