Why is Twitter amplifying the tweets of hate groups? Twitter’s promoted tweets and trends have recently featured harmful content by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a designated hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Profiting from hate and hate groups is unacceptable. FAIR isn’t just any hate group. It’s one of the worst of many bad ones founded by the white supremacist John Tanton. And through groups like FAIR, anti-immigrant white supremacists legitimize violence against our communities. FAIR is also one of the primary architects and cheerleaders of policies that have torn millions of immigrants away from their families and communities through deportation, imprisonment, and even death. Republicans are trying (yet again) to repeal our health care. Their plan would push more than 24 million people off their health coverage, just to boost profits for drug and insurance corporations and give tax breaks to billionaires. Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-NJ), my congressman, is leading the charge. My name is Barbara Blonsky and I live in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) literally saved my life. I was diagnosed with breast cancer more than 20 years ago. Because of the ACA, I have been able to get the care I need, even though I have a pre-existing condition. Now, Rep. MacArthur is pushing other Republicans to repeal the ACA and undermine protections for people like me, with pre-existing conditions. It would also gut Medicaid and raise premiums. San Jose officials state the damage total $73 million. How prepared is our city for similar impacts? >Local governments must drive solutions to protect their communities: The impacts of climate change are felt at the local level. With expected damage on the rise everywhere, it is unlikely we would be able to depend on future financial assistance from our state or federal government. Collectively, local governments are driving solutions to protect their communities with comprehensive emissions reduction and adaptation strategies. San Leandro has already invested significant resources toward our goal of “reducing our carbon emissions by 25% below 2005 levels by the year 2020.” (San Leandro’s 2009 Climate Action Plan). But for San Leandro’s Climate Action Plan to ultimately be successful, our city’s carbon reduction strategies must address ALL of our city's contributions to carbon emissions. Arguably, the significant financial holdings we have in banking institutions that finance pipeline development may negate the achievements we make toward our current Climate Action Plan goals. This is why our strategy must ALSO include defunding and divesting our city’s financial investments in institutions bankrolling ongoing fossil fuel extraction. This weekend, an official in the White House said that Sebastian Gorka—a senior adviser to Trump who has controversial ties to Hungarian Nazi-linked group Vitezi Rend—would potentially be ousted from his "counterterrorism" position, but the Trump administration hasn't made a final decision. Last week, Gorka abruptly walked off stage during a cybersecurity panel at Georgetown University after students protested his extreme Islamophobic views and ties to a Hungarian pro-Nazi political party to which he swore a lifetime oath of loyalty. And, as if his shady ties with far-right extremist groups alone aren't enough to disqualify him from serving at the heart of government, Gorka was also recently exposed as a fraud who has questionable Ph.D. credentials in Hungary. Gorka and his wife Katharine, another Trump adviser, have also spent the past two decades as part of the fringe Islamophobia network. They've worked at Steve Bannon's Breitbart and have been closely affiliated with Frank Gaffney's notorious Center for Security Policy, an extreme anti-Muslim think tank. Donald Trump claims to be an "expert" at firing people. Tell the White House to make the easy decision fire Sebastian Gorka now and remove him from government completely.

It is imperative that during such a frightening time in our history that the sense of community and connectivity that has always characterized the City of New York be made visible. This is crucial to the well-being of all children. No child should be worried about getting raided or losing a parent to deportation! It is time for our elected city officials to take a stand and protect the people that they have sworn to honor and defend. This is our home. This is our sanctuary! It is your duty as elected officials to love and support the people.

The American people want and need universal healthcare, and this can only become a reality if the entire United States Congress and the President can voice their support for H. R. 676, which, if passed by Congress and signed by the President, would expand our current Medicare system to cover all Americans. When U.S. presidents order military action, the American people need and deserve a strong, vibrant, and independent news media, one that not only challenges the assumptions that lead us to war, but also one that holds our leaders accountable for the way in which they are conducted. When President Trump illegally launched military strikes on Syria, and later, when the U.S. military dropped one of the largest conventional weapons in its arsenal on a target in Afghanistan, we witnessed some of the most irresponsible and reckless coverage from the corporate media since they helped President Bush launch the Iraq war. War is not entertainment. But the media is glorifying Donald Trump’s warmaking, and it’s time we make them stop.

The practice of secretly gathering private information without cause is a violation of the 4th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Law enforcement officials have abused the power that these tools give them, which threatens the very foundation of our freedom. This practice must be stopped immediately.
