In the fall of 2016, Kalamazoo, Michigan agreed to take a 70 million dollar donation from the 1% of Kalamazoo led by Former Monsanto board director, MPI research president (a company that sells animals for scientific testing with several animal abuse cases) and Chair of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder's Political PAC William "Bill" Parfet. Kalamazoo essentially took this money as a partnership with an undisclosed understanding of what the people of Kalamazoo would be committing to with taking this money. We have heard claims of being responsible to raise 500 million in 3 years, that our emergency services will be radically budgeted with Wall Street market performance (not like traditional options). Now Kalamazoo is financially in bed with the same corporate circles who made the decisions with flints water no less. Kalamazoo is hearing whispers that our water is next to be privatized under Michigan government. This petition is here to work as a preemptive statement to say the people of Kalamazoo will not see privatized water like Detroit and Flint. We will not accept this corporate favoritism. Before we hold a local election, we demand to know who will agree to not allow privatization of water for Kalamazoo and Portage Michigan. On January 7, 2017, there was a horrific accident that took the life of Shania Costella. Shania’s vehicle hydroplaned on Road 426 and China Creek, and her vehicle rolled over the edge and into the creek. Her loss was felt across the mountain community, her high school, friends, and family. Shania’s sister Sahvannah survived the tragic accident, and together with Caleb Morgan, one of Shania’s friends, they have decided to start this petition to prevent any further accidents on this dangerous stretch of road. Stringent job qualifications are required for most high-level positions in the government and in the private sector, but this is not so for the most critical position of all, the President of the US. The candidate for this office should at least be able to pass a basic civics exam, should know from experience what public service entails, and can prove to the voting public that he or she will not carry business conflicts of interest into the Oval Office.

Freedom of speech is becoming even more of a crime under Trump’s reign. This weekend during an anti-Syrian war protest, a Trump supporter antagonized peaceful protesters, storming the speakers’ platform and physically assaulting them to start a fight. Instead of helping, four police officers, tackled and brutalized Connell Crooms, one of the only Black protesters, and hit him so hard they knocked out his hearing aid. Bystander video footage shows officers beating him while he flailed helplessly and handcuffed on the ground. One officer punched Connell five times while other officers pinned him down.
