Close to 98% of federal funding to the NERRS from NOAA goes directly to coastal communities. News emerged this past Friday that the Trump Administration is urging drastic cuts to NOAA's budget, including complete elimination of the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. Without the funding and support that NOAA provides, many of our nation's reserves would be forced to shut their doors. Science, training, and technical assistance essential to keeping our coastal communities safe and thriving would disappear. Reserves are special places that communities count on to educate children, adults, and decision makers about their environment. Nationwide, they provide STEM education to more than 8,500 kids and 250 teachers annually, deliver coastal resiliency training services that reach more than 2,500 communities, and maintain more than 110 water quality stations and 30 weather stations that collect data every 15 minutes to manage hazardous spills, shellfish industry operations, water quality, and emergency response to storm surge and flooding. Three troubling bills target the homeless and protesters. Today during the women's strike march in NY, organizers were arrested for "civil disobedience". These women marched today peacefully for their rights and to let their voices about these issues be heard. We can't let them arrest people just for using their first amendment guaranteed by law. This is fundamentally un-American - to have a public servant in his capacity with his power reveal that he wants to arrange an election in such a way as to keep people from voting...? This petition is to gather support for Old Dover Neighborhood Association's "Slow Street" Application. We believe that Harrison Ave is a dangerous roadway in need of traffic calming efforts. The region that stretches from E Berkeley Street to Malden Street is populated with local shops, restaurants, a day care, school, homeless shelter, and hundreds of new residences that have been developed in just the past few years. Unfortunately, despite all this new traffic, little has been to slow the vehicles that speed up-and-down Harrison Ave on a regular basis, or to protect pedestrians. The existing crosswalks are not clearly marked, signage is sparse, and there is poor visibility at intersections which contribute to frequent accidents and near-misses. As such, we strongly believe that Harrison Ave is an ideal candidate for the City's Slow Street program.
