In the wake of Trump's Muslim ban, some Ohio municipalities like Cincinnati have taken the step to declare sanctuary city status. Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel and new State Rep Candice Keller have announced plans to introduce legislation not only to outlaw sanctuary cities but to hold their elected officials responsible for crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. It has become obvious that MO Senator Roy Blunt votes have been bought. He is ignoring the calls from his constituents and needs to be held accountable. To prevent this from happening in the future we need the ability to recall our federal officials.

When a politician wins an election, he or she is allowed to draw their own districts as a tactic to ensure their own re-election. A politician should not be allowed to choose their voters. Rather, the voters should be allowed to choose their representative. By utilizing a nonpartisan committee, we can end this practice so that districts are straightforward and represent the needs of the community rather than a political party.

I received an email from the White House asking for signatures for Trump's petition to show support for Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court. The White House website has this petition highlighted uppermost on the site. I created a petition there for the opposition view. However, the government site accepts signatures for my petition, but does not count them! This is an example of the authoritarian tactics American citizens are now facing. I am asking MoveOn members to help counter the lies and misrepresentations coming from the administration on the levels of support for right-wing leaning nominations, especially for the Supreme Court, by signing this petition.

House Republicans want to eliminate the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) -- and we can’t let that happen. The EAC’s job is to ensure our election infrastructure meets the highest standards for security and usability. They work with state officials to help them meet these standards, and gather information about the best ways to ensure that every eligible voter can have their vote counted. With still-unanswered questions about the influence of Russian hacking on the 2016 election, now is the worst possible time to throw out these critical safeguards. That’s why we we can’t let Republicans gut this critical commission. Congress created the EAC when it passed the Help America Vote Act in 2002 -- a package of reforms to improve voting systems and voter access in the wake of the 2000 election. We’ve made a lot of progress since then, but there’s still more work to do -- gutting this agency now would be the wrong move. The greatest democracy in the world deserves the best, most secure elections system in the world. The EAC works every day to make that a reality -- so we can’t let Congress eliminate it. Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina refuses to hold town halls with the public, thus allowing him to avoid his constituents and their questions. We the people of North Carolina deserve a Senator who will hear us out and be willing to speak with us about his positions and votes. Repeated requests to his staff to hold town halls are met with derision and dismissal. In response to constituent Kim Y's request for a town hall, Senator Burr's Chief of Staff, Dean Meyers, replied, "No, I will not submit a request for a town hall meeting to the senator. If you have concerns, let me know about them and I will pass them along to the senator. No, I do not need your contact information, because we are not going to meet with you. If you are frustrated, that's YOUR frustration and I cannot help you with that. No, the senator will not have a town hall forum. No, I will not request one." Senator Burr claims to be a public servant, but refuses even to meet with the public he represents. He has said this is his final term in office, meaning constituents won't even be able to hold him accountable at the ballot box. By not being accessible to constituents, Senator Burr has basically indicated he will not be held accountable for his votes for the next six years. What is Senator Burr afraid of? We deserve a town hall!

Oregon's air is unhealthy and harming vulnerable Oregonians. The cause is preventable mobile and industrial pollution. The biggest and most harmful source of air pollution is dirty diesel engines. Heavy metals and other toxics stick to fine, sooty particles in diesel emissions that can make their way deep into our bodies where they can cause cancer, heart attacks, asthma attacks, stroke, infertility, and more. Thankfully, there is a clear solution: Oregon needs a statewide diesel emissions standard (like our neighbors CA and WA have) that requires cleaner-running diesel engines. New diesel engines (built after 2007) run quite clean (with up to 95% less pollution); the problem is diesel engines last a l-o-n-g time and Oregon doesn't require the new technology. Older diesel engines contribute to 60-70% of Oregon’s particulate pollution (DEQ). If we don't take action, Oregonians will be stuck with dirty diesel & dirty air for decades to come. Don't let that happen.Oregonians deserve to breathe clean air all the time wherever they live, work, and play.

6th Congressional District Representative Peter Roskam refuses to convene an in-person town hall meeting with his constituents. Instead, he only meets with select groups of constituents and/or donors whom he knows will not challenge his views or ask tough questions. 6th District constituents of all political persuasions have significant concerns to discuss with him, have a right to access Representative Roskam, and should not be shut out of the democratic process any longer.

UPDATE 11/27/17 The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is under attack. Last Friday, Director Richard Cordray stepped down. Following secession protocol that was set up by Congress, Deputy Director, Leandra English became the Acting Director. In an unprecedented move, Donald Trump appointed his own Acting Director of the CFPB, OMB Director, Mick Mulvaney. Now the bureau has TWO DIRECTORS and it is up to the courts to decide who will run the CFPB until a new permanent director is appointed and approved by Congress. We stand with Acting Director, Leandra English and applaud her for her years of dedication to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau fights for students and student loan borrowers. The CFPB has returned nearly $12 billion in relief to over 29 million Americans wronged by big banks, credit card companies, and predatory student loan servicers. Supporting students and student loan borrowers is central to The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s mission. For years, families dealt with the impact of a dangerously deregulated student loan industry. As a result, more than 43 Million Americans are buried under $1.4 Trillion worth of student debt. Unchecked student loan companies caused families major hardships forcing them to carry the burden of college costs for life. Fortunately, the CFPB is an independent federal agency dedicated to holding these companies accountable. The CFPB is the first line of defense for defrauded borrowers. Recently, the Bureau filed three lawsuits against Navient, the nation’s largest student loan servicer, accusing the corporate giant of countless abuses - including overcharging borrowers and ruining the credit scores of veterans. The CFPB also shut down illegal student debt relief companies and challenged the deceptive practices of for-profit colleges, like ITT Tech. To date, millions of dollars in relief have been returned to those impacted by these predatory businesses. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau continues to take important strides to defend students - we must do our part to defend the CFPB. We believe it is extremely important to level the playing field for ALL consumers. Student loan borrowers depend on the CFPB to ensure that their interests are defended against bad actors in the student loan industry. We urge Congress to oppose any efforts to weaken the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and its critically important role and to reject any attempts to unseat their effective Acting Director, Leandra English who has been a powerful advocate for students and consumers everywhere. All Americans, including more than 43 million with student loans, must be able to count on a strong, independent Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
