  • Trump's Denial of Climate Change Threatens National Security
We are ALL threatened by Donald Trump's refusal to accept the reality of climate change. His nominees, all of whom deny climate change, will implement policies which will cause irreparable harm to the United States and the rest of the planet.

  • The New Democratic Party
The Democratic Party is embarrassingly out of touch with the American public. This election was the final straw. However, there has been a decade-long highway of failures leading up to Election 2016: Republicans hold 68 of the 99 state legislative chambers in our country, we have lost 14 governorships and 13 Democratic U.S. Senate seats. Following the November election, many of us felt certain the party would wake up and eagerly reorganize. Unfortunately, that has not happened. Instead the party establishment is hunkering down and recommitting to the choices of its past. We our calling on Sen. Bernie Sanders and his group "Our Revolution" to establish a new political party. If you agree, please sign and share.

  • Terminate U of M Football Coach Tracy Claeys
We, the undersigned citizens of Minnesota and other concerned citizens, urge the immediate termination of University of Minnesota Head Football Coach Tracy Claeys. As strong believers in the importance of leadership, justice, opportunity and respect, we urge the President of the University of Minnesota, Eric W. Kaler, and the University of Minnesota Athletics Department to terminate its head football coach, Tracy Claeys. In response to the Sept. 2 allegations against U of M football players and a players’ boycott of practice and participation in the Holiday Bowl, Claeys tweeted on December 15: “Have never been more proud of our kids. I respect their rights & support their effort to make a better world!” Claeys’ tweet expressing his pride in the team failed to mention or acknowledge the importance of respecting women. Further, it did not condemn violence, sexual assault or disrespect of women. We feel this is not at all acceptable. In judging Claeys' action in this context, we propose that two significant historical problems must be acknowledged: - Sexism, disrespect of and violence against women, and - Racism, and the lack of due process for many people of color in the American justice system Tracy Claeys’ tweet fails to acknowledge the tragic, historic mistreatment of women, demonstrating that he is not an appropriate or effective leader for young people. We believe he put the welfare of his football program above the welfare of a female student, despite that his own football players admitted to disrespecting and mistreating her. We believe his priorities are misplaced, and that he lacks sound moral judgment and leadership skills. We believe he is not an appropriate representative of the University of Minnesota, or the people of Minnesota. We urge President Eric Kaler and the Athletics Department to fire him, effective immediately. • Ask Hillary Clinton to Choose An Alternative to Donald Trump
According the the 12th Amendment (see www.solartopia.org) Hillary Clinton could instruct her delegates to cast their Electoral College votes for an alternative candidate who might win enough Trump defectors (37 are needed) to deny him the presidency and either win outright in the Electoral College or put the contest into the House of Representatives. We ask that she step forward in a "Profiles in Courage" moment and save the world from a Trump-Putin catastrophe.

  • Block Right-Wing Supreme Court Appointments
Many people are still in shock that, defying all the predictions, Trump and the Republicans won the White House, the Senate and the House. At least one can hope for some relief in two or four years if Democrats, Independents and disillusioned Trump supporters ‘throw some of the bums out’. The much bigger threat lies with the Supreme Court where Trump will certainly nominate an extreme right judge to fill the Scalia vacancy. This and a likely Ginsburg replacement during Trump’s term will drastically alter the Court for decades to come. We can expect this Court to repeal Roe v. Wade; weaken the rights of women, immigrants and the LGBTQ community; further disenfranchise blacks, Hispanics and all minorities; favor big business over workers and unions; continue Citizens United and facilitate the buying of elections by the rich; support fossil fuels, hinder alternate energy and ignore the threat of climate change…. to name a few! This threat should not have happened. Antonin Scalia died on Feb 13, 2016 at the age of 79. In March President Obama nominated Merrick Garland, the Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals, to fill the vacancy. However, Republican Senate leaders, in an unprecedented move, refused to hold a vote on the nominee until a new president was elected. Mitch McConnell said, "The American people are perfectly capable of having their say on this issue, so let's give them a voice. Let's let the American people decide.” Republican control of the Senate means that, unlike Garland's nomination, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold hearings and the Republican-controlled Senate will schedule a vote. As long as Republican senators remain loyal to the party, the thin majority they hold should be able to confirm Trump's nominees. That leaves Democrats with one alternative - a filibuster. If the Democrats do resort to this parliamentary tactic, which hasn't been employed against a Court nominee since 1968, they will be able to block a nomination, again assuming that they have the party discipline to hold on to their members and prevent the 60 votes needed to break a filibuster. We must urge Democratic senators to immediately state their intention to block, by filibuster if necessary, any right wing Trump appointment to the Supreme Court. This stance is easy to explain using the very logic the Republicans used to block Obama’s appointment. While Trump garnered the most Electoral College votes, he did not win the support of the majority of Americans. He lost to Clinton by almost 3 million votes (48% to 46%). Americans have spoken, and Trump’s support does not meet Mitch McConnell's and the GOP’s standard. Note that at the time the Republicans said Obama lacked popular support to make the appointment, he had beaten Romney by 5 million votes (51% to 47%) and had an approval rating of 55%. We call on Democratic senators to immediately state their intention to block, by filibuster if necessary, any right wing Trump appointment to the Supreme Court. We have your back. We will strongly support you in this critically important action.

  • Tell Bronx NYC Council Members to Support Waste Equity Bill Now!
We urge you to support Intro 495, a.k.a. The Waste Equity Bill, which seeks to unburden communities in The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens that handle an unfair 80% of NYC's garbage. Each borough needs to take care of their fair share and the South Bronx shouldn't be saddled with over 30% of the city's garbage. We are already suffering an epidemic crisis with the highest rates of asthma in the nation. This city's economics must not continue to be prioritized over the health of our communities. Not only do we deserve better from our elected officials trusted with our health and environment, but we demand better.
