• Add your name: We are the movement for Black lives
Guided by love, we continue to stand together for justice, human dignity and our shared goal of ending all forms of state violence against Black people. We organize, occupy, demonstrate, march and chant for a new future: A future we can be proud of. We stand on the shoulders of our ancestors, who fought for their freedom and ours. Like them, we want a world where our lives matter. We want an end to the war being waged on Black people, in all its forms. Some people fear change, and that's ok. Many will attempt to halt our progress. That is not ok. Some will continue their attempts to undermine us, but we will remain undeterred. For far too long, our unjust deaths have meant business as usual in this country. No more. We pledge not to be controlled by fear, but instead by our dreams. Join us, and pledge to do the same: Stand with the Movement for Black Lives.

  • Tell Congress and Pres. Obama: Defund police that continue to kill Black people
Four Black deaths in a matter of days, we're in--and have been in--a state of emergency. Within a week, our nation has bore witness to the brutal police induced murders of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Delrawn Smalls, and Alva Braziel. Instead of indicting the officers that killed these Black men and reforming the departments that enable them, the federal government continues to pouring millions of dollars into the police departments that employ them. We can't afford to spend millions of dollars on police departments that will continue killing Black people. Join us in calling on President Obama and Congress to take executive action to pull all grant funds from any police department that doesn't make reforms to protect Black lives.

  • CBS, MSNBC: Stop giving a platform to Rudy Giuliani's racism
Over the past few days, Rudy Giuliani has gone on CBS and MSNBC to make racist and derogatory remarks such as “When you say black lives matter, that’s inherently racist.” [1] He also gave false statistics and confused police brutality cases by saying a police officer is serving 25 years for “brutally attacking” Amadou Diallo. None of the four police officers who shot and ultimately killed Amadou Diallo in 1999 served any prison time. [2] Someone who gives false information and furthers racism should not be given a platform on mainstream media. There are plenty of people who can speak to matters of police brutality and relations between minority communities and police. Experts such as Michelle Alexander and Black Lives Matter leadership should be called on and given a platform. By continuing to give a platform to Giuliani, you are giving credibility to his outright distortions and divisiveness and doing a disservice to your viewers and your reputation. Sources: 1. • Racism Does Not Belong On Television: Tell CNN To Fire Corey Lewandowski and Scottie Nell Hughes
In a shameless move to increase their ratings, CNN is providing Donald Trump supporters Corey Lewandowski and Scottie Nell Hughes with paid positions and a national platform to promote Donald Trump’s hatred and racism. Even worse, CNN is hiring Lewandowski and Nell Hughes in order to cater specifically to Donald Trump supporters - since their regular Republican contributors oppose Donald Trump’s candidacy. By hiring Corey Lewandowski as a regular commentator, CNN is effectively validating the opinions of someone who repeatedly denied press access to journalists covering Donald Trump’s campaign, was charged with a misdemeanor after forcibly grabbing reporter who was attempting to ask Donald Trump a question, and who helped normalize Donald Trump’s dangerous and toxic rhetoric. By hiring Scottie Nell Hughes, CNN is demonstrating that it is willing to promote the opinions of an individual who has defended Donald Trump’s use of anti-Semitic imagery on Twitter and has promoted riots at the Republican National Convention. If we want to stop Donald Trump’s racist rhetoric from spreading, then we keep biased political commentators like Corey Lewandowski and Scottie Nell Hughes from appearing on networks like CNN. We demand that CNN terminates Corey Lewandowski and Scottie Nell Hughes’ contracts and removes them from the network immediately!

  • Stop the Islandia Casino Now (exit 58, where the Marriott is located)
*Updates noted at bottom. WE REJECT that, after OTB admitted major losses ($30 million), Albany’s answer was the Casino, placed in the midst of an established residential, school and business area. WE REJECT the huge FINANCIAL AND SOCIAL BURDENS that will befall our suburban and semi-rural communities: dramatically increased traffic, property taxes, theft crimes, fire/ rescue calls, and property depreciation. WE REJECT the proposed Las Vegas-style neon signs and billboards advertising the casino along our suburban highways. WE REJECT the political deception because a vote against the casino referendum was still a vote for the video lottery terminals (VLTs). WE REJECT the Board of Trustees in Islandia voting for this project. The majority of community came out to the town meeting voicing opposition to this project in our neighborhood. Residents of Islandia and surrounding Islip, Hauppauge and Smithtown are saying NO. Petitions by hundreds of residents were submitted. No Casino! THEREFORE, we call upon you to immediately rescind the authorization for 1,000 video lottery terminals in each county to be operated by Nassau and Suffolk County Off Track Betting (OTB) corporations. We ask the Senators and Assemblymen to co- sponsor and pass Assemblyman Fitzpatrick's Bill A.5187 to repeal Video Lottery Gaming on Long Island. Update: Islandia officials cancelled a meeting Tuesday July 12th at where they were to vote on this controversial Suffolk OTB plan to open a mini casino in the village. The Board has not stated on their site new date. Unite, spread the word, starting with Islandia and the neighborhoods in the 10 mile radius of this project. Because this is a TIME SENSITIVE ISSUE - Sign the petition - REACH OUT to a friend, relative or neighbor in Islandia - Then share with Suffolk County connections and everyone you know! - Visit Facebook page: A CALL TO ACTION, ISLANDIA. • We Demand A Forensic Audit On Chicago's Finances!
49 public schools closed. Six public mental health clinics closed. Mass transit service cut backs. Chicago parks needing expansion and repair. Massive cuts threaten public schools. Joblessness and violence escalates in our communities. At the same time we see the Mayor pushing to give away park land to a billionaire filmmaker and plunge the city into another billion dollars of expensive debt to build a vanity museum. At the same time, Chicago continues to be plagued by corruption and crooked deals that rob us of hundreds of millions of dollars. It's time to get to the bottom of the TRUE state of Chicago's twisted finances. The CivicLab is calling for an independent forensic audit of EVERY aspect of Chicago's business. We want ALL the books opened and examined by experts who are not creatures of the Democratic Machine or its allies in business and Big Law. We want all departments, agencies, boards, commissions, contracts and employee records open and put online. The CivicLab is responsible for the TIF Illumination Project (http://www.tifreports.com) and the new book "Chicago Is Not Broke. Funding the City We Deserve" (http://www.wearenotbroke.org). • DNC Floor Fight against TPP
Winning the fight against TPP is more important than winning the presidency. If multinationals can go through the back door to neutralize our laws, voting in elections will be pointless. Bernie must hold Hillary's feet to the fire on this, the biggest of all issues.

  • Stand with Gov. Dayton and #BlackLivesMatter
Governor Dayton said, "Would this have happened if those passengers and the driver were white? I don’t think it would’ve." I represent St. Paul, and I've worked with the community on many issues, including criminal justice issues. When our leaders speak truth to power, it is essential that morally conscious citizens stand up to support them. People of color are killed by police disproportionally. The time for reform is now. We need a cultural shift within the nation's police departments, and we can start today with the state of Minnesota. Lend your support today and sign this petition. Thank you.

  • Philly: Remove the shameful Taney name from Taney Street and Park
We the undersigned believe it’s time to erase the name of bigoted Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney from public places like Taney Street and Taney Park in Philadelphia. Taney notably delivered the shameful Dred Scott decision that said people of African ancestry were not or ever intended to be citizens under the Constitution. Honoring him is like honoring John Wilkes Booth or Adolph Hitler. Plus he has little if any actual physical connection with Philadelphia. Instead, we want to celebrate the life of a real Philadelphia hero, Octavius Catto, who did so much for racial justice here. (And while the city will be honoring him with a statue on the apron of City Hall, it’s also important for his name to be prominent outside of Center City.) This renaissance man, scholar, athlete, teacher, organizer, patriot and civil rights activist was brutally murdered on Election Day in 1871 during a particularly nasty campaign. His killer was acquitted. Catto contributed his talents and finally his life to Philadelphia. So we are asking you to remove Taney’s name and rename both Taney Street and Taney Park in Catto’s honor – as a lasting demonstration of justice over prejudice in Philadelphia. Baltimore and Maryland are both trying to distance themselves from Taney and move his statues from prominent spots. Let’s beat them to it by putting Taney in the rubbish bin of Philadelphia history where he belongs – and rightfully elevating Octavius Catto to a place of honor.
