  • Tell Ted Cruz: Religious Tests for Refugees are Shameful
Presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz jut said, in the wake of last week's attacks, that the United States should admit Christian, but not Muslim, refugees. The idea of placing religious requirements on people fleeing war and persecution is downright ridiculous, and President Obama has already called out the idea as such. Join us in telling Sen. Cruz that his behavior is un-presidential, and un-American and demand he cease pandering to Islamophobes with his offensive rhetoric.

  • Make State Parks, Public Fairs & Festivals ADA Compliant
In our area we hold many public events and market our town to retired individuals and visitors as a spa town with healing and mineral waters, and yet hardly any of our walkways are compliant. Our state parks, which serve as venues for some of these festivals, are not compliant and take away from the few handicapped parking spots that are available. The trolley that is available for one of our largest festivals has no wheelchair access whatsoever. These public festivals should be accessible for everyone. Some of these public events must apply for a license. These applications should ask if the venue is ADA compliant and if there is transportation if it has handicapped access. If "No" to either, the application should be denied. Someone should also find out the expected amount of people attending an event and whether the venue is large enough for that amount of people and also what plans there are for overcrowding and traffic because we have a mess going on where I live. You can email me for more information. To business owners: Statistics from the 2009-2013 US Census: Of the estimated 17345 population in Morgan County, 3198 are reported as disabled with the overwhelming majority of their disabilities being ambulatory and/or outpatient. Sign the petition and let those customer's know that you want their business!

  • OPWDD Services petition
Over the last two months, OPWDD has held transformation panel public forums throughout the state. Parents across the state expressed their concerns about their loved ones. There is an obvious need for community services however current community-based programs do not meet the range of services, quality of care and consistent workforce that state run facilities offer. A.7332 / S.4094 would compel OPWDD to show a true commitment to individuals with developmental disabilities by allowing them a list of options that would include state-operated choices in all areas of the state and allocate the necessary resources to help them. Please urge Governor Cuomo to sign the bill.

  • Don't slam the door on Syrian refugees
Treating refugees as enemies plays into the hands of terrorists. The killers behind last week’s monstrous terror attacks were seeking to provoke an overreaction. To reject all Syrian refugees is to give them exactly what they want. The United States is secure and strong enough to vet and safely resettle many thousands of Syrian refugees. We can rise above hate. Our elected leaders should speak out against anti-refugee fearmongering, and show families fleeing terror that our nation stands with them. And the global refugee crisis—the worst since World War II—only fuels the efforts of such terrorists.

  • End Homelessness - Housing First: Saving Lives, Saving Tax Dollars
We the citizens of the United States of America petition that funding for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development be expanded in the 2016 fiscal year with special consideration being given to Housing First Programs. Housing First is not only the most humane way to eliminate chronic homelessness in this country, it is also the most cost effective in the long run. For every 100,000 people housed through Housing First we can save $1.3 billion dollars according to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness. As voting constituents, we urge your implementation of this program to see our tax dollars used in the most efficient manner in the fight to eliminate homelessness. Housing First is the only program proven to both be cost effective and has the housing retention rates reflective of long-term success at getting people housed and keeping them housed. Let's end homelessness in America!

  • Paris attacks: respond with compassion
The devastating terrorist attacks in Paris are tragic and heartbreaking. Therefore, we resist the urge to respond by with more terror and tragedy. and move to respond, instead, with mercy and compassion. Refugees in Paris fled their homeland to escape this very violence. Closing the borders will not harm terrorists, only those fleeing from terrorists. Civilians in Syria and elsewhere are suffering under ISIS. Bombing innocent civilians is exactly the act causing this outrage in the first place. Violence, oppression and exploitation started this mess. War will not get us out. Instead, let's launch ground troops of compassion and launch a campaign to destroy poverty.

  • The all-seeing eye
I am demanding that the Houston police department and all police across the nation are required to wear body cameras to stop this modern day genocide of our Black men and all other people who have been senselessly killed by law enforcement. It's time to take a stand against ALL crime. But most importantly, it's time to take a stand together on decriminalizing or neighborhood and protecting the inhabitants from ALL criminals, including the police.

  • Help our Children: Pass Bill S. 1503 the Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Prevention, Education, and R...
The Honorable Senator Robert P. Casey Jr. 22 S. Third Street 6A Harrisburg, Pa. 17101 November 12, 2015 Dear Senator Casey: My name is Monica L. Wallace and I am a rising Junior at Carlow University's School of Social Work studying to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work with a concentration of Crisis and Trauma. I am writing you as a constituent to tell you my story and also express my hope that you will push to get Bill S. 1503, the Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Prevention, Education, and Research Act of 2015, from the introduction phase to being passed through both Houses and finally becoming a law. There is so much that medical professionals and the general public does not know about Lyme Disease. It mostly affects our most precious population--our children--and if not treated, can have life-long affects and be fatal. I am a voice of the people affected with this disease and I am pleading with you to help our children. July 2013 is when I become aware of Lyme Disease. My son Nathaniel at the age of three was bitten by a blacklegged tick on his neck. For three months he endured flu like symptoms and pain. Every single time that I took him to get examined by a doctor I was told that he was fine or it was just a bug. One time I took him to his primary care physician because he woke up with a red flaky rash on his forehead near his hairline. A rash is one of the first signs of Lyme Disease. The doctor accused me of placing my child in danger and permitting or letting him have access to chemicals. In September 2013 my son expressed that his knee was hurting and appeared to walk with a limp. Shortly thereafter his knee swelled up and he was unable to move his leg. I took him to the hospital to be examined. I explained to the physician and the medical staff about his condition and the countless trips to his PCP and the hospital and every time I was he was seen I told nothing was wrong with him. Now here we are months later and with the same symptoms and now he has loss mobility. I told the ER doctor that there is definitely something wrong with my son and you have to fix him! They performed a battery of tests and drew some fluid from his knee. I was told by the physician that fluid in his knee was a yellow-green color instead of the clear indicating an infection. That day he was diagnosed with Lyme disease and it was stated to me that it is in his blood and had spread throughout his body. He was immediately admitted. His was treated but not cured. He still has symptoms to this day. My son was 1 of the 5,758 statewide reported cases of Lyme Disease in 2013 in. For the past five years, Pennsylvania has reported the most Lyme disease cases nationwide according to the CDC. Here are some scary facts about Lyme Diesase: • Blacklegged ticks can transmit a parasite which can cause anemia. • Has the potential to be fatal. • Can causes fever, headache, chills and muscle aches. • The disease also can lead to psychological changes. Lyme Disease can be cured if detected early so there is hope to stop it before it becomes an epidemic. It is sad that this disease attacks one of our most precious populations: our children between the ages of 3-7. I am pleading with you to help our children and push to get Bill S. 1503 1503 the Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Prevention, Education, and Research Act of 2015 passed. Sincerely, Monica L. Wallace

  • No Public Money For DePaul Arena or Marriott's Hotel
The mayor closed 49 public schools. The mayor closed 6 public health clinics. The mayor has curtailed CTA services. Park District fees have shot up. The mayor pushed through the City Council a $500 million+ hike in property taxes and fees. The mayor is sitting on $1.4 BILLION in property taxes in the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) accounts. Say "No!" to the latest give-away to Loop/South Loop based large insider fueled construction projects that shower literally hundreds of millions of public dollars on private interests. Costs are already soaring for the arena and hotel project attached to the Chicago Convention Center. See http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20141118/BLOGS04/141119802/cost-soaring-for-proposed-depaul-arena. The mayor has approved $55 million in TIF (property tax funds) for the hotel construction and the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (a public body) will provide $164 million funding for the arena. WHY re these projects needed? Could it be for the much desired CASINO the mayor has repeatedly said he wants for the convention center? In any case - if DePaul wants a new stadium and Marriott's wants a new hotel - let them buy land on the open market and use THEIR OWN MONEY to build what ever they want. We are not broke. Say "NO!" to this terrible use of public dollars. We need #MorePublic!, not less.

  • Help give children their Right to Identity!
Children born to undocumented parents are being put at risk of the very horrors we as a nation fight to prevent globally; likewise, we cannot have our own children exploited and stand to say we support children. The anti-immigrant climate of our nation is stripping us of our humanity and the government's duty to protect its citizens and especially those who are the most vulnerable. We cannot ignore the futures of these children, for they have rights to protection and due process guaranteed to all Americans.
