  • Save our bears in Florida
I have lived in Florida most of my life, and I have watched how our indigenous animals are being destroyed at an alarming rate. Florida is just a microcosm of the world today. People would rather gun down and destroy their problem of overpopulation rather than solve it. The poor bears are the one that will die and suffer. If these adult animals are killed, their cubs have no chance of surviving. Man is their greatest enemy.

  • NFL Integrity
Americans have relied on their elected officials to preserve the integrity of professional sports. In the past, we have seen our leaders work tirelessly to protect our beloved games from harmful influences such as illegal gambling, criminal involvement, and steroid use. As fans, we are grateful for the steps Congress has taken to ensure that the best qualities in sports will always prevail. At this point and time, we are requesting that the Committee take urgent and immediate action to investigate the conduct of our nation’s largest sports conglomerate, the National Football League (NFL).

  • US Bank: Rehire whistleblower Israel Aranda
My name is Marcus and I work at US Bank. My coworker, Israel Aranda, was fired because he was a vocal advocate for bank workers and our communities. We met with bank officials in April and stood with community groups in asking US Bank to stop foreclosures on families during the school year, renew their promise to facilitate cash remittances to East Africa, and discuss creating an alternative harmful pay day loans. Israel and I also addressed issues affecting our co-workers. We are the backbone of the financial industry, the front line workers that generate billions in dollars of year for US Bank and many of us struggle with low pay and unstable employment. We are subject to unreasonable sales goals and performance metrics. We want to be able to provide our customer s with the services they need, not worry about being written up if we don’t sell enough products. Israel was fired by US bank because he is a leader in the Committee for Better Banks, a coalition of bank workers and community members who are trying to improve the banking industry to create good jobs for folks like me. Israel’s whistleblowing actions should be encouraged not punished. Israel believes, “At a time when banks are reaping record profits, US Bank executives should spend less time trying to silence its employees and more time listening to them and the needs of the community.” Join the Committee for Better Banks and demand that US Bank rehire Israel and address the important issues raised by our community! Why is this important? Bank workers, who have worked years in the same bank are finding themselves earning less than when they started. Employees experience constant changes to sales goals, bonus incentives, and benefits, resulting in job insecurity and a loss of wealth. Rather than rewarding employees for collecting money due to the bank, US Bank punishes them for not prolonging the debt payments. This incentive system is bad for workers, bad for customers and ultimately harmful to the company's future. Investing in US employees is not only good business but also huge cost savings technique over the long haul. Rather than feeling disposable and leaving the job, employees feel more ownership over the success of the bank leading to less turnover and subsequent costs associated with training an ever-changing workforce.

  • UCSC Chancellor Blumenthal: Support the End of the Wage Disparity for All University of Californ...
Teamster members received their last wage increase in July of this year and soon it will be time to negotiate a new contract. Wage disparity among the UC campuses, especially the so- called, “rural area” campuses will be an important topic for our next contract in 2016. Are you ready to take action? Since the early 2000’s, Labor Unions have protested to close the wage disparity at UCSC. It’s been 50 years since the University of California Santa Cruz has opened its doors and the campus is known for its activism and democratic practices. We call on you Chancellor Blumenthal to do the right thing and publically support ending of the “rural area” wage disparity.

  • We demand a Congressional investigation of the OB/GYN specialty!
UPDATE: On Aug. 6, Sen. Mark Warner sent the research behind this petition to the FDA. Now we just need a hearing! Thank you, Senator Warner! According to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3543732/ and many other studies, women are significantly more likely to die prematurely when their ovaries removed. Average age at surgery is 42. Those women are are 70% more likely to die before age 80 than women who didn't have the surgery. Women older than 45 still die prematurely - risk only decreases 6% for each year past age 45. At no age is this acceptable for women who receive no benefit. I, and about 14 million other women in the U.S., were made seriously ill when our healthy ovaries were removed at the time of elective hysterectomy. This is done 55% of the time women have a hysterectomy despite the fact that only 2% of all women have a risk of breast or ovarian cancer, and might benefit. Though 14,000 women die of ovarian cancer each year, 365,000 healthy pairs of ovaries are removed in women with no known risk. This is a national health crisis. Unsure this is accurate? http://www.gynreform.com/citations.html Though it's not well understood outside of medicine, ovaries make hormones that we need for our entire lives. Our lifespans have been cut short by these surgeons. These doctors publish study after study in their own medical journals, then ignore the data and continue doing things that are making us gravely ill and lead to our premature death. This must be addressed in Congress, in court, and they must be made to stop. A complete revision of their training and accreditation processes, one that indoctrinates them with a more appropriate way of looking at patients, must be a top priority. Visit www.gynreform.com and www.overy.org for more information.

  • Will Hillary Clinton Help Jam the Revolving Door between Wall Street and Federal Agencies that Re...
It’s known as the “revolving door.” Many government officials responsible for overseeing Wall Street are — wait for it — former Wall Street executives. It turns out the Big Banks even give big bonuses to executives who go slumming in government. Of course, these ex-executives often seem more interested in staying cozy with their former employers (who they’ll probably go back to work for anyway) than enforcing the law. Meanwhile, regulators who didn’t come from Wall Street in the first place are constantly wooed by the prospect of lucrative job offers to leave public service and go to work for the financial institutions they’re supposed to be keeping an eye on. Thankfully, a bill recently introduced in Congress — the Financial Services Conflict of Interest Act — would jam the revolving door between Wall Street and federal regulators. This commonsense package of ethics reforms would: - Prevent new agency officials from taking official actions that directly benefit their former employers. - Prohibit Wall Street firms from offering “golden parachutes” to executives who take government positions. - Restrict former regulators from lobbying for two years. - Require departing bank examiners to wait at least two years before taking a job with any bank they oversaw. Senator Elizabeth Warren noted that the Financial Services Conflict of Interest Act is “a bill any presidential candidate should be able to cheer for.” And, in fact, Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley have both already endorsed the measure. Hillary Clinton should make it clear that she supports this much-needed legislation, too.

  • No Beach Fees
As a native of New Jersey I find it totally unacceptable I should have to pay to gain entrance on any public beach. Every other state has found a way to allow all beaches to be free, clean and guarded. Tell our legislators to correct this flawed system.

  • Adrianna's Hope: Finding justice for those who can no longer speak.
In 1998 my daughter was violently beaten and shaken to death. The person accused was charged with 2nd degree murder and was found "not-guilty" due to reasonable doubt. Her autopsy, as well as the evidence provided to the court, clearly showed that she was abused. And the results of her autopsy were ruled as a homicide. Her life was taken, and the accused is living as if nothing happened because of a technicality. THIS MUST STOP as our lives have when she was taken from us.

  • Support the Iran nuclear deal
Scuttling the Iran nuclear deal would create more instability in the Middle East. The war with Iraq was a mistake in which many Americans and innocent Iraqis died; let's not let that happen again. I don't believe the attack ads on this deal because there are too many people who are knowledgeable about the agreement and who support it. Diplomacy is the right solution. Please don't give in to the well-financed lobbying campaign against the Iran deal. Vote in favor of the Iran nuclear deal in September.
