A recent EPI study showed that over 98% of clerical support staff at the University of California cannot afford to meet the basic family budget for a single parent with one child in the city where they work. Because of this, many of the support staff at the UC are forced to move farther from their work site, borrow money from family, and in even cut back on necessities. It is time for the UC to recognize the hard work the clerical support staff does to keep the University of California running. It is time to pay us a living wage.

I am a person of color and a professional who will be attending this year's fair. We will be at a booth sharing our non-profit services with the community. I am writing because I realize there will be a good chance the confederate flag will be displayed. Many people see this as a hurtful and flippant racist statement. I am asking that there be a memo put out that no band or vendor should display this symbol. An entire region of the country decided to rebel when the president said they couldn't buy and sell black people anymore; they made a flag to indicate that they were indeed on a different side from the rest of us on that issue. People of color have not been welcomed to this part of Oregon; please help change that by doing the right thing. Thank you.

There have been a number of stupid petitions followed by stupid legislature that seeks to tax or prohibit normal behavior from normal people trying to get by. Please stop the stupidity in our society, government, and media!

I have a cottage in northern Michigan and have state land across the street from my property. Several trucks full of dogs and their hunters hunt for bear in these woods. Whenever I have seen bear they are extremely scared; sniffing the air and turning their heads at every slight sound. They hurt no one and all neighbors enjoy seeing them. I have also found several lost bear-dogs and have had to find homes for them for they are left abandoned with no-one looking for them. It's a horrible method of hunting for both bear and dog. Bear's are only seen as a trophy and these dogs as mere things to use to capture their trophy bear. Michigan needs to protect our bear for the population of them are so small. Hunting for them should not be so cruel and frightening.

When I learned that local regulators gave permission to oil companies to haul tanker cars full of crude oil on the railroad tracks a few blocks from my home, I was terrified. I’ve heard of horrific fiery train disasters involving similar trains -- including one that killed 47 people and incinerated half of the downtown of a small city in Canada. If the same thing happened here, my family and my neighbors would have no chance of surviving. According to the Wall Street Journal, the oil carried on these trains -- called Bakken crude -- is much more volatile and prone to explosion than other types of crude, making it particularly hazardous when tank cars derail or puncture. The agency responsible for protecting our community from these dangers -- the Bay Area Air Quality Management District -- recently granted permission to Kinder Morgan to haul oil by train through our community. The Air Quality Management District conducted the process in secret without notifying the public or conducting a public review. As a mom, I want to fight for the community my babies are growing up in. Right now, it’s a risk and a gamble to live here, but if enough people sign this petition, I believe we can create a better, safer, and greener community. And if we win here in the backyard of the oil companies, it’ll set an important precedent that could help stop bomb trains across the state and even across the country. Please sign my petition to demand the Bay Area Air Quality Management District reverse their decision and hold an open public review process that allows local residents to decide if we want to allow bomb trains in our neighborhoods.

African lions have declined by at least 50% in just three decades. Habitat loss, loss of prey species, human-lion conflict, and poaching have all contributed to this rapid loss. Following pressure from conservation groups, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed listing African lions as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. The final rule is expected anytime. However, it is simultaneously proposing an exemption that would allow the import of African lion "trophies" (or carcasses) from nations that it determines practice sound conservation. Allowing lions to be killed by wealthy trophy hunters could further exacerbate the precarious status of these majestic creatures. Please join us in asking the USFWS to protect lions under the widely successful Endangered Species Act and to prohibit the importation of lion trophies.

Recently, Congressman Mark Meadows has filed a motion within the House of Representatives for Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) to vacate his speakership. Meadows accused Boehner of bypassing Congress, creating a series of crises to force votes on legislation and punishing his members. The grounds of that resolution are far fetched and ridiculous. Speaker Boehner did not create a series of crises to force votes, nor did he ever bypass Congress. Speaker Boehner has a political role to direct his members, and he has the power to appoint or remove members to committee spots, chairmanships, etc. Meadows was a victim of Boehner's punishments, as he lost his Chairmanship of the Subcommittee on Government Operations. Meadows ultimately got his chairmanship back, but not even that has satisfied Meadows. Since entering Congress in 2013, Meadows has been a contributing force of intense partisanship and gridlock, and was a major contributor to the 2013 Government Shutdown. Meadows has complained about the way he was treated by the Speaker, but he should wonder why he was punished. It appears everything must fit his rigid and far right ideology, and if something doesn't fit it, it's automatically bad. Meadows has states that he's doing this to "cause a discussion", perhaps we should start a discussion about Mr. Meadows. By signing this petition, you're asking Mark Meadows to resign from the 114th Congress. Our elected leaders should be more then drama queens and ideologues. I think the people of North Carolina's 11th District, The House of Representatives and the United States of America deserve more then Mark Meadows's extreme partisanship.
