  • Fight For Autism Treatment Options!
We are parents and treating professionals of children with autism who want our children and clients to have access to ALL proven methods of therapy prescribed by their doctors. There is a lobby to remove the options of other approaches (e.g., relationship-based) from insurance plans, thereby grossly limiting parents’ choice to only one treatment approach (behaviorism). Parents should have the ability to choose the treatment they feel gives their child the best chance for success.

  • President Obama: Pledge to Veto the DARK Act!
The Senate has passed an anti-consumer bill designed to keep consumers in the dark about the GMOs in their food, and the House has indicated it will support the bill, even though Senate Ag Chair Mike Conaway admits the bill is "riddled with ambiguity." This bill would also preempt more than 100 other state food safety and labeling laws! It would delay labeling for at least another 2 years. It would exempt most of the common GMO ingredients. It allows companies to hide information about GMOs behind confusing electronic codes that discriminate against anyone without a smartphone or internet access. And contrary to claims by its supporters, this bill is not mandatory--it contains no mechanism for enforcement and comes with no penalties for non-compliance. If Congress passes this bill, opposed by nine out of 10 Americans, our last resort will be a veto by President Obama. In a campaign speech Obama gave in 2007, in Iowa, he said, “Here’s what I’ll do as President . . . . We’ll let folks know whether their food has been genetically modified, because Americans should know what they’re buying.” On May 20, 2009, Obama issued an Executive Order to heads of executive departments and agencies stating that “preemption of State law by executive departments and agencies should be undertaken only with full consideration of the legitimate prerogatives of the States and with a sufficient legal basis for preemption.” A court has already ruled that Vermont's law is constitutional. Vermont’s law is working. Corporations are already printing the words “produced with genetic engineering” on labels. If Congress is concerned about creating a uniform mandatory labeling standard, Congress should support a federal bill that is as strong or stronger than Vermont's law--not one that is unenforceable, full of loopholes, and allows companies to hide information behind confusing symbols. GMOs are required to be labeled in 64 other countries. But despite the fact that nine out of 10 Americans say they want this information, thanks to nearly $400 million in lobbying by the biotech and food industries, Congress wants to keep this information hidden from Americans. Please ask President Obama to veto this anti-consumer, discriminatory, deeply flawed DARK Act.

  • Tell Senator Kirk to Reject Attacks on the Clean Power Plan!
The Clean Power Plan to put limits on carbon pollution from power plants for the first time was just unveiled by President Obama. But dirty energy interests, together with their allies in Congress, are aggressively working to stop this crucial climate action policy in its tracks. The day after the final plan was released, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, headed by infamous climate denier James Inhofe (R-OK), passed a bill that would effectively kill the Clean Power Plan. Among other things, the "Polluter Protection Act" would allow states to opt out of the Clean Power Plan, and prevent it from being implemented until all lawsuits are settled, which could take decades. This unacceptable bill will be coming to the full Senate soon, and Senator Kirk's vote will help determine its fate. Senator Kirk voted for legislation to undermine the Clean Plan earlier in the year. We need to make sure he puts the interests of kids and climate before polluters this time. Sign the petition to tell Senator Kirk to stand up for our kids and climate, and reject attacks on the Clean Power Plan!

  • Catalog and remediate abandoned mines in Colorado
This addresses a set of concerns raised by the recent spill into the Animas River. As a resident downstream from historical mining sites, I have some concern that my family and community may face future similar threats. As a resident in the region, I anticipate negative impacts on the local economy and on one of my favorite watersheds in the state. I am concerned about future similar events if the EPA is inadequately funded.

  • Governor Christie: Reconsider your conditional veto of S-2058/A-3738
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Tell the Governor to RECONSIDER his Conditional Veto of Senator Raymond J. Lensiak's legislation S-2058/A-3738. This legislation authorizes establishment of three pilot recovery alternative high schools that provide high school education and substance dependency plan of recovery to test the effectiveness of this model. The Governor's Conditional Veto makes it virtually impossible for New Jersey to embrace Recovery Schools for children suffering from drugs and alcohol use. What this Veto does is place the burden back onto the shoulders of already over-burdened school districts. The decision lacks the courage so desperately needed right now in the face of a horrific epidemic sweeping New Jersey and stealing the lives of our youth. The legislation currently includes essential elements and includes the national framework for Recovery High School's set forth by the Association of Recovery Schools (ARS). We must have this specific framework in place to make EFFECTIVE AND SUSTAINABLE Recovery High Schools a reality in New Jersey. As a young woman in long-term recovery myself, I know how important it is to support youth recovery. If we want to stem the viscous cycle of addiction we must not only put money towards prevention and treatment, we must also support recovery. Mariel Harrison
