HB 149 and SB 134 are universally denounced by fair housing advocates, attorneys, and disability groups as unnecessary pieces of legislation that pander to the brazen assertion that housing discrimination should actually be tolerated in Ohio. SB 134 makes an artificial distinction between so-called "actual" discrimination and that discrimination which is proven by time-tested controlled investigations run by private fair housing organizations. Among other regressive measures, the bill would lower the penalties for housing discrimination and damage the important safeguards provided by the Ohio Civil Rights Commission (OCRC). Ohio residents would either need to use the administrative process provided on the federal level through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or be forced to use attorneys to sue violators in state court. In addition, Ohio law would no longer be "substantially equivalent" to federal law, thus ending substantial HUD funding to our state.

Everyday when I walk down the street, I notice that there is at least one homeless person on the street. It hurts my heart whenever I walk by them. Also I personally have a friend who was homeless and is scared by what people told him when he was homeless. Our school is working with a program, Generation Citizen, and are trying to solve this issue.

Good news! We are gaining ground in the fight to build a food system that’s better for people and the planet! In a huge step forward, the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee has recommended that Americans eat less resource-intensive meat and more plant-based foods for the sake of our health and that of the environment. This is a potentially game-changing move. But now we need to make sure the Obama Administration includes the Expert Panel’s recommendation in the final Guidelines (a.k.a. the “Food Pyramid”). More than 140,000 people like you have already signed petitions in support of sustainability in the guidelines, Now we can have even more impact by submitting comments directly to the USDA and Department of Health and Human Services. If the US Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends a more sustainable diet, the impact on our food system would be huge. But Big Food has millions of dollars on the line and isn’t letting this happen without a fight. The Obama Administration will decide what to do based on the number of people who submit comments. So it’s crucial that our voices are heard louder than the industrial meat industry’s!

We the people have witnessed injustice at the hands of juries. Regardless of the selection process to weed out bias of the jury, it is our observation that bias does exist among jurors chosen. This case is huge and at this point I assume everyone has a prejudged opinion on whether or not the officers involved should be prosecuted. On behalf of the people , I would like to ask that we are able to vote on the decision especially considering these officers are placed in our city to protect us. This decision will affect the people of Baltimore city because we are the ones who have daily interaction with these officers as they police our neighborhoods.

School Board Member Julie Williams is sharing hateful messages that can damage our school community. According to a link posted on Julie Williams facebook page, SaveCalifornia.org warned parents to keep their students home Friday April 17th. Last Friday marked the 19th annual Day of Silence; a student-led movement to bring awareness to LGBT-Anti Bullying. So why is Julie against such a movement? According to the page, she shared you should keep your students home to show "strong disapproval of the pro-perversity state school bureaucracy."

It's wrong for selfish governors to turn away the possibility of health coverage for the working poor while basking in their own benefits that those same poor people pay for them to have.

We must be a city in which every working adult can meet his or her own basic needs.

ITT-Technical Institute targeted veterans, low income families and single parents. We were promised a quality education, 80% job placement and that our credits would transfer to other colleges and universities. They forced many of us to pay on our loans while we were in school, after telling us we did not have to pay anything out of pocket until after we graduated. The school never gave us a chance to have control of our financial destiny; they failed to tell students before signing the enrollment agreement that their financial aide would be maxed out by the school. In order for a student to finish the program, they will have to take out the "Temp Credit" through the school at 0% interest until paid off; that was a lie. The school turned around and sold those loans to private lenders with interest rates ranging from 13%-28%; it's like funding your education on a credit card. These were terms set by the banks and the school without the student ever being notified. This is a v iolation of the Truth In Lending Act. Many students were forced to quit their programs before ever gaining their degrees, because they were misled. Others stuck it out, to find out that their degrees hold no value due to the accreditation, value of education and their reputation. We are students, family, friends and supporters that will not stop fighting to get these loans forgiven. Education should be free in the country, putting an end to the predatory lending and the poverty it is creating. "Our voices will be heard." The educators at California Virtual Academies (CAVA) teach students from all over California in grades K through 12. They are committed to providing the best possible education to their students and upholding the important principles that brought them to the profession. In recent years, the teachers have become increasingly concerned that some decisions made by CAVA negatively impact their students and their profession. Frequent policy changes, shifting class rosters, changes in responsibilities and increased workload make it harder to provide the education our students deserve. Though these dedicated educators are committed teachers who work long hours and struggle to serve their students, it feels like it is never enough. After talking with hundreds of CAVA educators from across the state, the teachers decided it was time for a change. Specifically, they believe educators who work at CAVA ought to have a stronger voice in decisions that impact their school, their students and their working conditions. We, the signers of this petition, support California Virtual Educators’ decision to organize a union with California Teachers Association (CTA) to have a collective voice in achieving the highest quality learning environment for students and working environment for educators. We call on the CAVA Administration to recognize the educators’ 2014 democratic decision to unionize. We call on them to refrain from exercising undue influence or interference. Finally, we believe it is past time for administration to sit down and bargain a contract with CAVA teachers that improves the teaching and learning conditions for all educators and students at California Virtual Academies. We believe working fairly and respectfully with the teachers is in the best interest of CAVA's students, families, educators and community.
