There are many types of gender identity beyond male or female, but in all legal documents—along with driver's licenses, state ID cards, etc.—you have to conform to the "gender binary", not allowing people who are transgender and/or non-binary (or "genderqueer") to show who they truly are. Changing this will allow them to accurately identify themselves, which is a small but significant step for trans* rights. While not many will be affected, it will greatly benefit those who need it. It's a small change, but it's a start, and it's huge for those members of the LGBTQ community who have faced discrimination for their gender identity. It is a step towards true equality, so let's pave that path, and make Massachusetts the first state to officially recognize non-binary people.

I am concerned about environmental pollution and dangers to wildlife and our food chain. Plastic in the ocean poses major danger to all kinds of sea life and the fisheries world-wide. Our coastal communities and the Alaska economy are very dependent on a healthy fishing industry. Therefore this issue should be of great concern for the well being of all Alaskans and I hope for their understanding and support.

36 states have terms limits on the office of governor. Often governors run for President during their second term. If the voters in a governor's home state are disappointed by that governor, they may be conflicted by their wish to be rid of their governor and their responsibility to help the rest of the nation avoid similar disappointment.

Currently, there are several bills in Florida that are being passed or attempting to be passed that restrict bathroom and public facility usage to reflect "birth gender." This is directly targeting the transgender community. I have heard several times that this is a mute issue since, and I quote Rep. Artiles, "they are not a protected class so this isn't an issue". We need to stop these potentially harmful and senseless bills.

Genetically engineered foods, also known as GMOs, are popping up more and more, but because they're not labeled, we don't know where they are. Farmers, processors, packagers and distributors are already segregating and labeling GMOs for international sale in the 64 countries that require labeling. I believe we should be offered the same information in Illinois. Without labels for GMOs, we're not getting the full story on foods at my grocery store. Just as fat, calories, sodium, potential allergens like peanuts, and expiration dates appear on labels, so too should genetically engineered ingredients. The Illinois Senate introduced the Genetically Engineered Food Labeling Bill — SB734 — and we need to make sure there is a long list of supporting lawmakers. But just as quickly as we're securing support for labels, Monsanto is working to stack up opponents. That's why we need you to speak up. If enough Illinoisans make enough noise, our representatives will have to listen.

Nebraskans desperately need help. It is both a secular and spiritual issue, and it is humanitarian.

The Mariner Cay, Yacht and Country Club of Stuart, and Rocky Point residential neighborhoods will be severely impacted by an obtrusive, looming 120 ft telecommunications tower. The private prison industry is a fast growing industry, with companies such as GEO group and Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) posting profits of 2.9 billion by the end of 2010. These profits are at the expense of people of color. Private prison corporations, such as GEO Group and CCA, also lobby hard for anti-immigrant legislation, such as seen in Arizona with SB 1070 and Georgia with SB 87. Private prisons are also responsible for neglect and abuse in prisons. Such legislation and examples of abuse and neglect directly contradict our moral consensus as people of faith and as tax payers of the United States of America. Jesus so identified with those in prison that he told his followers that to visit someone in prison is to visit him. The prophet, Amos, thundered against the people of God for dehumanizing the poor and vulnerable to the extent that they sold the poor for a pair of sandals. As people of faith, we are called to speak out against making profits from the mistreatment of the poor. We are called to care for the vulnerable in society and not profit from their marginalization. On the day after his triumphant entry into Jerusalem—Palm Sunday—Jesus disrupted the profiteering of the poor, by driving the money changers from one of the People's most sacred institutions. After careful review, the Chandler Unified School District governing board, and the parents of K-12 students resolved that the proposed gubernatorial budget, if enacted, continues to degrade the ability of Arizona school districts to provide an excellent education for all students. The proposed state budget will cut $6 million from Chandler Unified School district funding. This is in addition to the already enacted district cuts of over $36 million the past five years. At the same time, proposals to arbitrarily cut essential "outside the classroom" funding jeopardizes support functions required to maintain a safe, healthy and effective school environment. The Chandler Unified School District governing board also resolves that proposed measures, such as HB2303, constitute micro management by state government that removes local community control of school operations contrary to the wishes of local citizens. For example, over 94 percent of the 50,000+ parents in the district support the current school start schedule, which would be radically changed by HB2303 with no justification, producing significant disruption to parents and staff members. The Chandler Unified School District governing board, and the parents of K-12 students oppose the proposed budget legislation. We urge the Governor and the Arizona legislature to reconsider these proposals, which we strongly believe will be harmful to our education system, students, parents and district staff. We request that our schools be properly funded and we reject any measures that reduce local community control of our schools.
