  • P.S. kids locked out of own school playground for Adult Sports Leagues.
For the last 6 years, the DOE has given permits to Adult Sports Leagues to use Lower East Side school playgrounds for their games locking out local parents and their kids. These games go on for hours 5 days a week with 50 players at any given time. The adult games taking place on D.O.E. property have little to do with socializing through sports and more with socializing centered around binge-drinking culture where "teams" are encouraged to chronicle their drinking on game nights and off-nights, on Facebook and Instagram, in order to win a $100.00 bar tab for having the "team with the best bar spirit". If the DOE is truly for "Kids first" then they need to revoke these permits for private use immediately.

  • Prevent another disaster off our coasts
Five years ago, millions of barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico during the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The Gulf still hasn’t fully recovered from the spill, yet now the Department of the Interior is proposing to open even more of our coastal waters to offshore drilling. This shortsighted and irresponsible policy would put our coastal ecosystems and communities at even greater risk, and is shortsighted and irresponsible policy. Earthjustice and I are partnering with groups across the country to demand action now to keep more drill rigs out of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. And we need your help. Join me in telling the Obama administration to stop new leasing in the Atlantic and the Arctic oceans. New offshore drilling and leasing in those areas would open fragile and priceless coastal ecosystems to damage from pollution and spills, pose immeasurable risk to economies and communities up and down the Atlantic seaboard, and accelerate global climate disruption. An oil spill in any body of water causes irreparable damage. It’s just not worth it. If we’re going to successfully turn the tide on climate change, we must move away from all fossil fuels—whether it’s fracking, tar sands, mountaintop removal, or offshore drilling—and focus our efforts on increasing renewable energy. Now is the time to tell the Department of the Interior that drill rigs have no place in the Atlantic and Arctic oceans.

  • Get Rid of the Billboards
During car trips across the U.S., I noticed that most states do not have a lot of billboards. While returning home from a road trip from Florida I could tell when I was in Michigan because of the overwhelming amount of billboards. During car trips, kids and adults will usually rarely look outside the window; they mainly play on a mobile device or watch a movie. All in all, I think billboards are a very ugly and insufficient way to advertise. Getting rid of billboards will make Michigan even more beautiful.

  • School Day Starting Later
My petition is about how high schoolers should start school later in the morning because it is scientifically proven that the brain does not start working until 10am.

  • Provide adequate funding to the UC system in California
I'm starting this petition to ensure our California UC schools get the funding they need. In a world where many nations provide free higher education to their people, it is an embarrassment and a shame that deeply offends me that we have such a tremendous issue with student debt and the problem isn't going away: It's getting worse! This atrocity must end and we have to start that process now!

  • Reduce or eliminate refined sugars in public schools
I am starting this petition I am unhappy by how much sugar is allowed and encouraged in the schools. My mother recently died from diabetes complications and I witnessed the results of a high sugar, low nutrition intake. No child should be encouraged to have ill health. Schools should instead create a statewide policy of eating healthy snacks, enjoying vegetables and finding it fun to bring healthy treats to school. Everyone benefits when you change the foods that are allowed in the schools to ones that are good for a child's overall health.

  • Protest A&E's continued production of Duck Dynasty
As a caring human being, and an atheist, I am horrified that Phil Robertson's comments go unchallenged and unremarked. The A&E organization directly funds the continuation of a television show lionizing this man and his family, and gives legitimacy to his hatred. That it was offered as an example of proper Christian behavior towards unbelievers is abhorrent and beyond the norms of civilized human behavior.

  • Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act: Why refuse free Federal dollars because of pol...
Mississippi is currently throwing away the opportunity to receive Federal funds that will positively impact the health of its most vulnerable citizens by expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act . The acceptance of such funds will also hold down the overall cost for health care borne by everyone paying through their insurance or out of pocket. The cost of healthcare in Mississippi has a direct effect on the recruitment of new business and human talent to our State. Refusing to take advantage of Federal monies that will without doubt improve the lot of Mississippians just because of ideological and political reasons is poor policy and just plain wrong. Having spent most of my career working to seek cures for children with cancer, I am mortified by the ideological paralysis that prevails over good and moral sense.

  • Sign the petition to support striking Baja California farm workers
For the past 6 days, farm workers in Baja Norte’s San Quintín Valley have been on strike denouncing abysmally low wages, 12-hour days with no overtime, obligatory 7-day work weeks, and maltreatment. Worker Ana López says, “It is time for us to stand up… There are people who think that because we come from pueblos, we are ignorant about our rights.” The United Farm Workers of America is standing in solidarity with the workers from San Quintín and we ask that our supporters do the same. Ana works for Driscoll supplier Berrymex, whom workers claim that in addition to violating wage and hour laws, also fails to pay into workers’ social security (which is supposed to give workers access to healthcare and a pension), leaving them with nothing when they go to make a claim. Demand that the grocery retail industry hold powerful agribusiness companies such as Driscoll accountable. Please sign this petition. We will be turning this in to top grocery retailers around the country, including Target, Walmart, Krogers, and Albertsons/Safeway.
