  • Ronald Ritchie Should Go to Jail
The police have been found justified for their actions in the shooting death after only a few days of deliberation from the Grand Jury, but despite that conclusion they were falsely called to a situation that warranted no police involvement. They reacted without speaking with the perpetrator or even other witnesses to the alleged crime. If there had been a real threat, you would think other people in the store would have stopped shopping or called the police if they were in fear for their lives . Ronald Ritchie, as well as the police officers should be held accountable for their actions. Ronald Ritchie sparked a frenzy by calling the police and giving false information in a non-threatening situation. He was also still in the store. The video that has been published in the media has made this case clear and concrete, yet no one is being held accountable for a life lost unjustly. Filing a false police report is a serious crime that no one should get away with. • Shade Canopies for Mountview Park in CH, UT
Dear Honorable Mayor Kelvyn Cullimore, Jr. and Councilman Mike Peterson: The purpose of this petition is to draw community support in favor of providing shade structures for both playgrounds and around the splash pad area of Mountview Park. I am reaching out to you on behalf of Moms Offering Moms Support (MOMS) Club of Cottonwood Heights and Holladay, UT. We are a non-profit organization, supporting moms in our community, through voluntary events, programs and service projects. Our goals for this shade project is to raise awareness for sun protection and seek viable shade solutions for our area parks that lack protection from the sun's harmful rays. Our initial steps, as suggested by Councilman Peterson (in an earlier conversation), are two-fold: 1. Select one park in need. We have chosen to focus our attention and efforts onto Mountview Park (in interest of popularity, time and resources). This park draws dozens of community members daily for it's playground areas and splash pad. 2. Seek out interest and support from Cottonwood Heights residents. We are doing so with this petition. I've heard from area residents that the playground equipment at Mountview Park can be very hot on high temperature days and there is minimal shade throughout. The trees initially planted are few, far between, and too young to provide the shade necessary to block the heat, UVA and UVB rays. I've often seen individuals or groups bring their tents for their own protection. However, I feel this is not enough, and we as a community can and should do more to protect our children in these play spaces. According to the Utah Cancer Registry, Utah ranks the highest in Melanoma cases across the country. (For more information, please follow link to original article: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865607746/Utah-leads-the-nation-in-deadly-melanoma-cases.html?pg=all ). These are alarming statistics and prevention is key. Please help us in doing so. We thank you for your time and look forward toward a collaborative solution. • Open the DMV, or no voter ID!
Lack of a voter ID is more likely for those who are poor, disenfranchised, marginalized, without the flexibility to leave their jobs to accommodate limited DMV hours, people of color-- all people who traditionally vote for Democratic candidates. When I participated in canvassing recently, I was concerned that many in our rural area weren't even aware of new voter ID requirements. Every citizen deserves the same vote, without incurring extra costs or hardships, without eligibility tests that favor one party over another.

  • Investigate the New York Federal Reserve Over Secret Tapes
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is facing accusations that it showed "extreme deference" to Goldman Sachs, a bank it is supposed to oversee. The New York branch of the Federal Reserve system is in charge of regulating the biggest Wall Street banks. However, the Fed has been accused of being too cozy with the banks it is supposed to oversee. For example, during the run-up to the 2008 financial collapse and subsequent $700 billion bailout, the Fed gave trillions of dollars in then-secret aid to banks, firms and even Caterpillar, a tractor company.[1] The latest allegations resulted when a whistleblower - a former examiner at the Fed - gave 46 hours of secret tapes to NPR's "This American Life" and the investigative journalists at ProPublica. The tapes allegedly reveal that the Fed failed to take action on "a deal that the top Fed guy stationed inside Goldman called ‘legal but shady.’"[2] The Fed has denied the whistleblower’s claims. In response to the secret tapes, Senator Elizabeth Warren (MA), who chaired the Congressional investigation into the Wall Street bailout in 2008, has called for oversight hearings. She has been joined by fellow Senate Banking Committee member Sherrod Brown (OH).[3] As Senator Warren said in calling for the hearings: “It’s our job to make sure our financial regulators are doing their jobs.”[4] Please support her call for Congress to investigate the relationship between the New York Fed and banks like Goldman Sachs. • U.S. Support for Israel Must Stop at the Green Line
Today, Israel is led by the most pro-settlement, pro-occupation government since 1967. Israel’s leaders openly prioritize land over peace, settlements over security, hegemony over healthy democracy, and Greater Israel over a greater position for Israel in the community of nations. Israel’s government has a right to defend its citizens, but it does not have a right to compel them to pay the price of a perpetual occupation, neither does it have the right to keep millions of Palestinians under military rule. Ending the occupation is a national security interest of the United States, of its international allies, and – first and foremost – of the people of Israel and friends of Israel worldwide. If Israel is to exist in the future as a Jewish state and a democracy, it must rid itself of the occupation. Successive Israeli governments have for years talked about wanting peace, but their policies of deepening and expanding Israel's hold on lands occupied in 1967 tell a very different story. If the Obama administration is serious about resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it is time for it to apply constructive pressure that would prompt Israel, in concrete ways, to roll back settlements and end the occupation – or get out of the way as others take the lead. After 47+ years of consequences-free pro-occupation policies, and two decades of failed US-led diplomacy, this pressure may be the only thing left that can convince Israel and its leaders to change course.

  • Prevent WI & Great Lakes Ruin--Stop Mining, Nuclear/Haz Waste Import
I'm starting this petition because All People, and industries depend on the clean water for survival and recreation. I am a Wisconsin artist. Like many, I enjoy fish, wildlife, and the beauty and tranquility of the great out doors. The proposed GTAC mine in Wisconsin's pristine Penokee Mountains near Lake Superior and the Bad River Indian Reservation threatens WI, the Great Lakes bio-region, Native wild-rice-culture, and regional health. We have a responsibility to ourselves and future generations to protect the "commonwealth" of air, forests, land, waters and Life. "Treasures out & waste in" is a recipe for perpetual poisoning. Mining, and nuclear/hazardous waste trade for profit and jobs cannot justify the ruin of Life & Life sustaining resources for eons to come.

  • Witt, Newkirk, and Williams RESIGN
Witt, Newkirk, and Williams have wasted millions of taxpayer dollars, harassed and insulted teachers, driven away experienced and effective senior staff, impugned students, ignored concerns of parents, broken Sunshine laws meant to ensure transparency and accountability, violated school board bylaws, betrayed the trust of citizens who voted for mill and bond in 2012, and publicly embarrassed our school district and its students by claiming our district is failing in written editorials, on television and on radio. We demand that all three of you resign before you do more damage to our community. We stand united in our support of teachers and students and the excellent quality of public education in Jefferson County.

  • Keepseagle For Farmers Not NONPROFITS
I am the Co-Founder and President of the Association of American Indian Farmers. I have been contacted by prevailing claimants, denied claimants and potential claimants to provide advocacy and outreach to Native American Farmers because they have been done a great disservice by the US Department of Agriculture and Keepeagle Class Counsel. Too many (thousands) of Native American Farmers have been left behind and left out of the Keepseagle Settlement process. It took an Act of Congress for Black Farmers who were denied an opportunity to participate in the Black Farmers case hence there was a Black Farmers Late Filers (2nd round) claims process which compensated over 17,000 additional Black Farmers . Unlike the Black Farmers case, Keepseagle has $380 million leftover so funds remain available and there should be a Keepseagle II not requiring an Act of Congress or additional funding. Native American Farmers are still losing land/farms and struggling to be competitive. Please help us tell Keepeagle Class Counsel Joe Sellers and U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan - Keepseagle for Farmers NOT Nonprofits!

  • President Obama: Keep Shell Out of the Arctic
Royal Dutch Shell Oil is preparing to once again attempt to drill for oil in the Arctic. Shell has shown, year after year, that they are not "Arctic ready" and can not be trusted to operate responsibly in these icy, desolate seas. The last time they tried--in 2012--they had to suspend operations after two of their drilling ships suffered serious accidents, one of them washing ashore. Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard found numerous pollution control equipment violations on the ships after inspecting them. It was also found that they did not have adequate spill prevention and cleanup equipment available for potential spills. Shell isn't ready for the Arctic and the Arctic will never be ready for Shell.
