The U.S. Postal Service is a vital part of everyday life in communities all across the country. Any reduction in service standards and processing centers creates delays in mail delivery. Veterans, the elderly and businesses that rely on prompt efficient service for medications, and payments will be negatively impacted. We need to Save our Service!!

The Geauga park district is a great resource for families of Geauga county and surrounding areas to enjoy year round. Families can and do often gather and spend the majority of a day in one of our beautiful parks grilling and eating, socializing and playing. Thanks to the recent addition of tether ball, sand volleyball, horseshoes, bocce ball, soccer/multi-purpose fields, and user friendly additions enjoying a day in the Geauga park district promotes a sense eudaimonia more now than ever and we the undersigned would like to see this trend continue. Geauga park district consisting of 19 developed areas and 9600 acres should be user friendly to all people of all ages and abilities all year round.

This year, 2014, there are 13 San Antonio Fire Fighters battling Cancer, and all 13 have been denied Line of Duty Benefits which are mandated by State Law. Studies prove that Fire Fighters, because of the hazards they face on the job daily, are more likely to develop Cancer than the general population. The research says that exposure to toxic fumes and the extreme heat from fires causes Cancer among Fire Fighters. In fact, the studies say that Fire Fighters are 1.3 times more likely to develop Brain Cancer than the general population; 1.5 times more likely to get Blood Cancer; and over 2 times more likely to contract Testicular Cancer. When it comes to healthcare, State Law says that our brave Fire Fighters should be covered through Line of Duty Benefits or Workers Compensation. Unfortunately, our City Manager has denied coverage for all 13 Fire Fighters that are suffering from Cancer this year. However, in a recent news article, she said that Fire Fighters are covered 100%. That simply is NOT TRUE. This year, 13 Fire Fighters are battling Cancer have been denied Line of Duty Benefits, despite the State law. Last year, we lost 3 San Antonio Fire Fighters to Cancer…AND ALL THREE WERE DENIED WORKERS COMPENSATION. Most of you know someone who has had Cancer and you know the emotional and financial toll that it can have on a person and his or her family. Copays and medical services cost thousands and thousands of dollars and would devastate just about any family. That is what 13 Fire Fighters and their families in San Antonio are facing today. Firefighters put their lives on the line every day to save our citizens from fires, medical and other emergencies. They do not like to be called heroes, but to many citizens whose lives they save they are. Please ask the City Manager to follow the State law and to keep her word. Fire Fighters have a job that is highly physical and that puts their lives at risk, not only from becoming a victim of the fire, but from the exposure to toxic fumes, burning chemicals and other Cancer-causing agents that they breathe and that penetrate their skin. How do you think the families and friends of the 13 San Antonio Firefighters battling Cancer this year feel about this issue? What about the families and friends of the Firefighters we lost last year? It is unacceptable. We must stand together and ask the City Manager to follow the State law and keep her word to cover Fire Fighters 100% on healthcare. You can help by signing the petition. I am opposed to any shutdown of the federal government. The federal government is essential to the functioning of our country. It provides necessary social programs, health care and retirement and disability compensation. When the government shut down before, it affected me personally because essential government services were not available to me and members of my family.

Martha Coakley is the Democratic Party nominee for governor despite getting less than half the votes! Would she have won in a 2-person race? Candidates are frequently elected with fewer than 50% of the votes, often because the majority was split among competing candidates with relatively similar positions. In 2000, more people voted for Al Gore and Ralph Nader than did for George Bush. Many people feel that votes for other than the two frontrunners are "thrown away". Those votes should count! Requiring a majority, assuring us another chance in the absence of that majority, would encourage us to vote for our first choice, even if that candidate is a "long shot". A runoff system could encourage more voting by people who now believe their vote doesn't matter.

Demand that Gov. Scott stop his unlawful hunt for non-citizen voters in Florida. This is a right & a privilege as an American Citizen!

Recently the state of Georgia enabled liquor stores to open on Sundays without having to sell food. In order for a restaurant or bar that sells food to be open on Sunday their food sales (for the year) have to account for more than 50% of their total sales. Restaurants and bars that sell food often have to drastically reduce the prices of the drinks that contain alcohol in order to meet that requirement. This in turn lowers sales, profits and possible tax revenue.

Homelessness is gripping the country in the wake of the great recession. The Honolulu City Council is indicating that it'd rather support the Hawaii Tourism Authority than the Hawaiians who have been devastated by the recession. Let's send a message that people come before tourism.

Goodell has lied about the circumstances surrounding his mismanagement and "double-jeopardy" actions regarding the Ray Rice matter. Let us learn from the past and never forget. In 1941, without a trial or charges of wrong-doing, over 2,300 Japanese Americans living in Hawai‘i were arrested and detained in county jails, prisons and internment camps like Honouliuli. For the past ten years, the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i has worked to preserve the historical site, document the experiences of the former internees and teach the lessons of the Japanese American internment. Honouliuli is a reminder of our civil rights and our shared responsibility to uphold the Constitution for all people, at all times.
