  • Stop the Opiod Addiction epidemic
The FDA does not require disclosure of the addictive properties of Oxycodone and other Opioids, either by the doctors or the warnings accompanying the prescription. This addiction is a rapidly growing epidemic, often leading to death, so immediate action is necessary. A family member was prescribed Oxycodone for pain after surgery and took it unaware of the addictive nature. He is now addicted and unable to stop .

  • Later MCPS High School start time
Research shows that teenagers have difficulty sleeping before 10:30 pm, and that they need 8.5 - 9.5 hours of sleep per night. Moving school start times to later than 8:30 am improves student performance and graduation rate and lowers depression rates in teens. Yet high schools in Missoula start at 7:55 am. Additionally, high schools finish at 3:00 pm, which means that many teens are home alone for several hours before their parents. If MCPS high schools started at 8:55 am and finished at 4:00 pm, teens would be more likely to get needed sleep and less likely to get into trouble during the afternoons. • Parents Viewing School Bus Camera At Manheim Central School District
Our son, Brayton Martin, started kindergarten last week. The second day he got off the bus it was brought to our attention by other students riding the bus that the afternoon bus driver was forceful with Brayton pushing him into his seat. We questioned Brayton who has a speech delay and he said "she is mean and it only hurt a little". The next morning at the bus stop I learned it was witnessed by other kids on the bus. I contacted Doe Run who informed me that I need to contact the bus company, Joseph c. Graybill Inc. The bus company said they would review the video and call us back. We followed up with another phone call to the bus company and they said the video was fine, nothing concerning was seen. In the meantime, we have heard from other parents at the bus stop of incidents their child has had with this particular bus driver. With this new information, we requested to view the bus video and the bus company said no it is not permitted. When we argued our case, they said it would need to be approved by the superintendent, Dr. Hatten. We contacted Doe Run, in the meantime, who were not made aware of this situation. They informed us they too were not allowed to watch the video since it had to do with the bus company personnel, not between their students. They apologized that they could not offer any more help. The guidance counselor did however speak to the bus driver to be sure there was not an issue with any students on her route which she stated there was not. We needed to once again follow up with the bus company and were informed the superintendent would not allow us to watch the video. We have discovered this is not a law rather a policy. Dr. Hatten said this policy is in place for student privacy. We are asking for your help by signing this petition to allow us to watch the video of our son, Brayton Martin, on the afternoon bus, number 23, on August 27th, 2014. As a parent, I am sure you understand that we just want to be sure our child and your child is in safe hands. If your child rode this bus, please sign giving us your permission to view this video. Also, many of you have reached out to me regarding issues your child has had with this bus driver; we urge you to contact Doe Run. The school said they have not known of any other problems. Thank you so much for your time. Sincerely, Coty & Lisa Martin

  • Stop the Enbridge Clipper Pipeline Scheme
Enbridge, the company responsible for the biggest inland oil spill in American history in the Kalamazoo River, has been trying to expand their Clipper pipeline and double the amount of tar sands shipped through the Great Lakes. But since the pipeline crosses the Canadian border, the new construction needs a permit from the State Department. But in an effort to avoid a public review they're instead adding new Clipper pipe on both sides of the border, and then a few miles out on either side, switching the tar sands over to a different pipeline that is already built, running the tar for a few miles across the border from Canada to the US, and then switching it back to the Clipper pipe to continue to the Great Lakes. Enbridge quietly sent this plan to State, and someone in the bureaucracy quietly wrote them back and said, basically, ‘yup, looks fine to me.’ One of two things could be happening here: One, a mid level bureaucrat has gone rogue, and is approving pipelines across the border with essentially no review or oversight from his bosses. That's bad. But the other option is worse: the State Department leadership has deliberately blown a loophole in federal law big enough to pass a tar sands pipeline through, completely invalidating President Obama's pledge to reject Keystone XL if it significantly impacts the climate. Send the State Department a message that this is unacceptable and blow this scheme wide open.

  • Sen. Grassley: Stop rewarding companies for fleeing America
Right now, a corporation can dodge billions in taxes just because it buys a company in another country, then claims to be headquartered there. It's known as an "inversion" and it's just another way big companies can avoid paying their fair share. Today it's Burger King, but there are a lot more companies lining up behind them. Last month, public pressure stopped Walgreens from moving abroad. Over the last few weeks, we have put Burger King on notice about their move to Canada. Now it's time we close this loophole all together. It's time to plug this loophole, and stop companies from leaving and forcing the rest of us to pick up the tab. We can't let big corporations continue to dodge taxes with high paid tax lawyers -- everyone should play by the same rules. How can we invest in education or job growth if large, profitable companies are scheming to avoid paying their fair share? We have a real opportunity to close this loophole right now -- but we've got to strike while the iron is hot. With all the scrutiny being paid to this issue while Burger King is in the process of declaring itself a Canadian company, we can push lawmakers to take up the issue. So far Sen. Chuck Grassley hasn't signed on in support of this common-sense idea -- that's why we need people like you take action.

  • Help Make Recycling Healthy
Everyday, millions of Americans, particularly in communities of color and low-income communities, face danger from hazardous waste recycling and reclamation. The Bush administration exempted thousands of these facilities—predominantly located in the nation’s most vulnerable communities—from safety requirements mandated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. The safeguards protect all Americans from exposure to toxic chemicals, and with your help can be reinstated by a new EPA rule under review by the Office of Management and Budget. Tell President Obama to protect those living just miles or even yards away from refineries, scrap metal yards, chemical plants, smelters, battery recyclers, mines and other facilities that reclaim and recycle hazardous waste. Ask the President to finalize the rule proposed by EPA to reinstate safeguards against dangerous recycling of hazardous waste. The 90-day review period has passed. Now it’s time for the EPA to act. Please ask President Obama to finalize a rule so strong that it doesn’t just change lives, but saves them.
