• Ask LeMunyon to Support Virginia Medicaid Expansion
The Virginia legislature is meeting in a special session to consider the Virginia budget and the expansion of Medicaid eligibility. The cost of the Medicaid expansion will be paid 100% by federal dollars during the first three years, and 90% after that. Our state delegate, Jim LeMunyon, opposes the expansion of Medicaid -- meaning that federal taxes paid by Virginians are going to other states and not ours. Medicaid expansion will enable hard-working poor and lower-middle class Virginians to have access to health care. Please sign this petition to let Mr. LeMunyon know that it just makes common sense to expand Medicaid in Virginia.

Reform Medicaid, don't deny it. I work in Healthcare, I see the suffering of the uninsured and the duplication of services and waste in the current system.

  • Del. Terry Kilgore: Please support Medicaid expansion
The purpose of this petition is to ask Del. Terry Kilgore of Virginia's District 1 to vote in favor of Medicaid expansion in Virginia. We want to ask him to do what is right for Virginians, all Virginians, including approximately 191,000 citizens of this state that are uninsured and waiting to see if their elected officials will do what's right for them. This is something that should be common sense, as it won't create extra financial burden for the state nor will it create extra burden on hospitals or doctors' offices. The federal government will be paying for Virginia to expand Medicaid, and roughly 30,000 new jobs will be created, many of which will be in the medical field. This has already passed through the state Senate and is favored by Virginia citizens. All that's needed is for a few members of the Virginia House of Delegates to approve this measure. That is all that is blocking the 191,000 Virginians from getting much-needed medical insurance. Most of these people are Virginia's working poor, some of which must hold two or three jobs and still cannot make ends meet, let alone afford insurance. Why not make an investment in Virginia's citizens, including the poor, the disabled, and the working middle class, by giving them the security of knowing they will have both preventative care as well as treatment for illness and injury? We are asking Del. Terry Kilgore to have empathy for these 191,000 Virginia citizens, and the many future generations that could experience better health and quality of life because of Medicaid expansion. Many of Delegate Kilgore's own constituency would greatly benefit from having increased access to healthcare services. As a voting citizen of District 1 I feel strongly that If Del. Kilgore were to support this expansion, it would show voting citizens in his own district that he does care and take seriously their ability to access necessary medical services, and it would also be noticed and appreciated by all Virginians. Please sign this petition encouraging him to do so, and to show him just how many people see this as a good, progressive move into a better way of life.

  • Mandated, enforced 25 mph speed limit on Damen, with stop signs at each cross street.
On Friday, March 21, our dog slid through a crack in our fence revealed by melting snow, leading to her wandering out onto Damen Avenue in front of our three-flat. A Good Samaritan saw this, and started to stop traffic to get her out of the street. A speeding SUV ran over the dog, killing her, and nearly ran over the good person that was trying to help. The situation is unfortunate, and I don't expect restitution for our loss. However, here is what terrifies me: the driver of the speeding SUV never hit their brakes, never slowed, never stopped. Further, not a soul has stopped for me as a pedestrian in a crosswalk when I am out running or walking, and I've also narrowly missed being hit, both during the day and after dark. The speed limit (or lack thereof), lack of enforcement, lack of traffic management signs (stop signs), or a combination of these has led to this stretch of Damen between Belmont and Diversey to become exceeding dangerous. This stretch borders Hamlin Park, where people bring their children and pets to play. What's next, a child running after a baseball? Human lives are at risk, as well as pet safety. An appropriate speed limit must be enforced on this stretch of road, with new stop signs installed to encourage slower speeds as well. The red light cameras at the six corners of Damen/Diversey/Clybourn are simply not enough to keep this residential street safe. Many other residents have expressed the same concern, leading to this petition.

  • Drunk driver laws and protection from drunk drivers
I am starting this petition against drunk drivers because on Jan.12, 2014 I was involved in a head on. Auto accident with a drunk driver going the wrong way on the high way. I suffered many injuries and had to have several surgeries to repair multiple broken bones in my elbow, forearm, wrist and hand. I also suffered broken ribs and foot bones. I have leg contusions, hematoma of the legs and bone bruise. I have been out of work and the drunk is out of jail on bail denying that he did anything wrong.
