• Autistic People Deserve Disney's Support
I am starting this petition because I am raising a daughter with autism and I am HER voice. She loves Disney World, she recognizes when she is there. It is her place and now their despicable actions will hurt my chances to take her there and diminish the chances she enjoys it the way I know she deserves.

  • Protect California: Don't Allow Fracking on Public Lands
Fracking is currently prohibited in the state of New York while the risks of this fossil fuel extraction process are studied. According to that state's health commissioner, "The time to ensure the impacts on public health are properly considered is before a state permits drilling." We agree. That's why, here in California, we're urging the Bureau of Land Management to continue its moratorium on new oil lease sales while it studies fracking's threats to the Golden State. Nationwide the Bureau estimates that 90 percent of new oil and gas wells on federal land are fracked. In California much of the Monterey Shale's estimated 15.4 billion barrels of frackable oil is under federal lands. All that fracking potential means our cherished public lands face severe air and water pollution, animal and plant species that depend on those lands face habitat loss, and humans living and recreating on or near these public lands suffer many health threats. The best way to protect these national treasures, as well as our climate, is to simply prohibit this inherently dangerous form of fossil fuel extraction -- and what better place to start than by banning fracking on our public lands? In California we have the chance to take one big step toward that goal. Please take action now to tell the BLM to maintain its hold on new oil and gas leasing on California's public lands.

  • Rep. Smith: Grow the Middle Class
Congress has 6 days scheduled before the Sep. 30 budget deadline to avoid a government shutdown. But some Republicans won't even negotiate unless Obamacare is defunded — and they're using the deadline to gain leverage. We need Rep. Lamar Smith to prioritize expanding the middle class during the budget debate. Unless we act quickly, he may join with Republicans like Rep. Paul Ryan and support more cuts to education, healthcare, and other vital services.

  • Drop bogus charges on human rights defender Berta Cáceres
Amnesty International has called on authorities in Honduras to drop spurious charges against three indigenous leaders, Bertha (Berta) Cáceres, Tomás Gómez and Aureliano Molina. If the three leaders are imprisoned, Amnesty said it will consider them prisoners of conscience. There have been increasing attacks against human rights defenders in the country ahead of presidential elections in November, Amnesty said. “Defending human rights in Honduras has become a life-threatening activity with Indigenous leaders protecting their peoples’ rights, being particularly vulnerable to attack,” said Nancy Tapias Torrado, Researcher on Human Rights Defenders in the Americas at Amnesty International. “It is clear that Bertha Cáceres is being harassed in order to stop her from defending the rights of the Lenca Indigenous Peoples,” said Nancy Tapias Torrado. Urge President Obama and Congress to use U.S. influence to press the Honduran government to drop the spurious charges. • Rep. Tipton: Stand up for the middle class.
Congress has 5 days scheduled before the Sep. 30 budget deadline to avoid a government shutdown. But some Republicans won't even negotiate unless Obamacare is defunded — and they're using the deadline to gain leverage. We need Rep. Mike Coffman to stop playing games and stand with the middle class during the budget debate. Unless we act quickly and hold him accountable, he and other House Republicans will keep proposing more cuts to education, healthcare, and other vital services.

  • Immigration officials should not break up Rony's family
Rony Ramos-Carrasco, father of two United States citizens and a model community leader with no criminal history, is current sitting in detention at a correctional facility in Louisiana. He desperately needs your help to get back home. One of Rony's young children, five-year-old Amy, has had a complicated medical history and needs her father's presence here in the US to help with her medical expenses. But to make matters worse, Rony's partner Yohana recently had emergency surgery and has been unable to care for their children on her own. Yohana was able to get some help from a relative to complete tasks as simple as carrying her one-year-old son Jake, but her relative could only stay with her for so long. Yohana needs your help bringing Rony back home where he belongs. Please sign this petition to get Rony out of detention -- he is counting on you. According to policies set by President Obama, there are multiple reasons Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) should release Rony from detention – reasons the local ICE office has ignored. Not only is he the father of two United States citizens, but he's also the “primary caretaker of a person with a mental or physical disability.” Five-year-old Amy's medical history has been confirmed in a letter by her pediatrician, and now she's even been diagnosed with depression as a direct result of her father's detention. But ICE has ignored these factors before, having deported Rony twice already. But Rony has been determined to not let his family suffer without him. He returned back to the US because little Amy was undergoing surgery and needed her father's support, both financially and emotionally. And as the sole breadwinner, Rony knows his family's entire wellbeing depends on him being in the US to work. When Congress passes immigration reform, Rony may qualify for immigration status and eventually citizenship. This is all the more reason for ICE to step in now and release Rony until Congress can finish its job.

  • Open the Library!
Year in and year out we try to learn as much as possible in the shortest amount of time. This year, we don't have a place to do so. We want to have a space available 24 hours a day so that we can come and be able to ask our peers last minute questions at any time of day and know that there is a place that this can be done in. Help us be the best we can be!
