• Wind isn’t Working
I moved to New Hampshire from densely populated urban centers around Boston and New York, especially to get away from crowded, dirty cities and urban sprawl. Although am a devout environmentalist, my first view of a 400-foot wind turbine in the woods did not make me happy – it made me sick. We have very little wilderness left – we don’t need industrial wind parks in the forest.

  • Call on Congress to support labeling of genetically engineered food
Now more than ever, the United States needs a policy for genetically engineered food labeling: there are genetically engineered ingredients in up to 70 percent of the foods on grocery store shelves, the USDA is considering approving a genetically engineered apple this spring, and the FDA is nearing its approval of a genetically engineered salmon. The labeling of genetically engineered foods should be mandatory. The public has the right to make an informed choice about the food they buy for their families. Without mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods, consumers are left in the dark. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Representative Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) have sponsored new federal labeling legislation, the Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act (S. 809 and H.R. 1699), in the Senate and House. Take action and tell your senators and representative to support the genetically engineered food labeling bill.

  • UI: Don't raise rates!
Connecticut has the second highest electricity rates in the country, and United Illuminating has the highest electricity rates in state. But now they are asking the state to let them raise their rates 12% over the next 2 years. The rate hikes would net United Illuminating $95 million over two years, which would cover the company's plan to increase its profits and would raise electric bills for its 325,000 customers. Tell United Illuminating its wrong to raise rates so they can increase their profits!

  • Abrogation of power by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia.
The President is using Al Shabab, reverting to tribalism, breaking the laws of the Constitution, and also causing large- scale disorder by killing people in Jubaland. This causes wide spread panic and fear across Somalia and among the diasporic Somalis, who have been through this before. Also, we would like to ask the American Government, ngo's, and other influential organisations and groups to withhold their support and resources until the President of Somalia stops the re-ignited genocide. That is not my fear. That is what is happening right now.

  • Bring Public Transit Service to Tobytown
Within affluent Potomac, Maryland, descendants of former freedmen in the Tobytown community have struggled for 50 years to maintain jobs due to the lack of public transportation. As a result, many residents of Tobytown are unemployed or underemployed. Transit access should be a top priority for low- to moderate-income communities.

  • Tell WBAL: Stop Allowing Your Reporters to Deny Climate Change
I’ve lived in Baltimore for twenty years, and I’ve never experienced storms of the intensity we’ve had in the last few years. From last June's intense derecho to the damage wrought by Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy, each event is another reminder of the way that fossil fuel pollution is changing our climate and making our weather system more dangerous. Television viewers like me rely on our broadcast meteorologists to inform us about the ways that climate is influencing our weather system. But unfortunately, I can’t count on the information I get from Channel 11 (WBAL). WBAL meteorologist Tony Pann denies that the climate is even changing, and has written a series of blog posts that contain false accusations, misstatements, and outright misinformation. Pann has written that global warming “stopped” in 1998, and that “dramatic cooling” has taken place ever since. Pann is a conspiracy theorist who has repeatedly alleged that climate scientists have “manipulated data,” and even once theorized that climate might be changing because Earth is raising its vibration from a 3rd dimensional reality to the 5th. Seriously. After learning about Tony Pann’s history of misinformation, I decided I needed to act. Along with University of Maryland climate scientist Eugenia Kalnay, I sat down to discuss WBAL’s climate coverage with the station’s news director, Michelle Butt. Ms. Butt said she takes climate change seriously, but she refused to take action to correct the misinformation being spread by one of her meteorologists. As a journalistic institution, WBAL has a responsibility to immediately stop the virulent climate change denial spouted by one its reporters. Join me in urging WBAL news director Michelle Butt to correct claims made by Tony Pann, and to take action to ensure that her staff report scientific facts about climate change, not misinformation.
