• Don't let them take my disabled son's benefits back
My son Warren, now 22, was born with multiple language and learning disorders. After an hard-won, two-year eligibility battle with the Social Security Administration, they now want to take back the money they paid him. He was 11 cents over one month and 14 cents over another month, yet they want the entire monthly stipend back. Disabled people are only allowed to have $2,000 in assets to qualify for Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI). This number was established back in 1989. The National Council on Disability has urged President Obama to raise the limit to $10,000 and create ways to help support work and independence. This petition asks President Obama to issue a directive that follows the recommendations of NCD Chairman Jeff Rosen.

  • University of Utah: support the Loan Fairness Act by Elizabeth Warren
The big banks get cheaper interest rates than students do on applying for student loans. The only way for this to make sense is if we care about banks more than we care about students. And if that's the America we live in, then I don't want to be here.

  • California State Assembly: Pass the DISCLOSE Act Now!
The California State Senate has passed the DISCLOSE Act. Now it is time for the State Assembly to act. The Assembly Elections Committee will take this up as early as June 18. DISCLOSE stands for "Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections". The California DISCLOSE Act would bring transparency to California elections by requiring clear identification of the top three funders of tv, radio, print and online political ads, as well as billboards and websites. Monsanto, DuPont, Dow and other corporations spent $47 million to defeat GMO labeling in California last year. Chevron, Occidental Oil and Aera Energy spent $94 million to defeat a tax to pay for alternative energy under the name of "Californians Against Higher Taxes". Voters need to know who is really behind campaigns ads.

  • Tony Frank: endorse the Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act
This act would ensure that students get the same favorable interest rates on their loans that banks get from the federal government. As the president of Colorado State University, Tony Frank should support students' financial and educational security. As a student facing a great deal of debt, this issue matters to me.

  • LACC Should Support Warren's Loan Fairness Act
As a concerned and productive student at LACC, I strongly urge you to endorse Elizabeth Warren's Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act. There is no reason why our tuition shouldn't match that of the banks' interest rate of 0.75%. College is meant to encourage critical thinking collectively. This act is highly critical for accredited aid to continue to educate those in need. Now is the time to unify and act on our vital thoughts!

  • Kentucky Board of Education: Support Climate Science in Our Schools
The Kentucky Board of Education is about to vote on Next Generation Science Standards, an updated and comprehensive set of standards which include the science of climate change. Sadly, climate change deniers – including State Senate Education Chairman Mike Wilson — are already lining up against this new research-based science curriculum (1). Senator Wilson wants to prevent climate science from reaching our classrooms at a time when climate impacts, from heat waves to drought to severe storms, are already harming Kentucky communities. I refuse to stand by while my grandchildren are prevented from receiving the kind of high-quality science education they need to prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Climate change will have a huge impact on our children’s future, and we need to let the Board know that Kentucky parents, grandparents and science supporters want our kids to learn the facts. Action now is critical, because the Board plans to consider adoption of the new science standards-including climate change education-at their meeting in Frankfort next Wednesday, June 5th. Thank you for taking action for our children and grandchildren! • Thank the Senate for passing the CA DISCLOSE Act!
California is getting ready to strike a blow against Citizens United by passing SB 52, the California DISCLOSE Act, a bill that would shine a bright light on the shadowy interests who depend on secrecy to influence elections. The full Senate just passed it on an overwhelming vote of 28-11. SB 52 (authored by Senators Mark Leno and Jerry Hill, sponsored by the California Clean Money Campaign, and endorsed by over 300 organizations and leaders) would mandate clear and prominent disclosure of who is behind political TV, radio, print, and mass mailer ads - on the ads themselves. SB 52 will stop special interests from hiding behind fake committee names by requiring ads to show their actual original contributors. SB 52 now moves to the Assembly, where Assembly Speaker John Pérez was one of 44 Assembly co-authors of the previous California DISCLOSE Act (AB 1648 authored by then-Assemblymember and now-Congressmember Julia Brownley) that passed the Assembly before running out of time to reach the Senate last August. Our elected officials deserve praise when they stand up for transparency and disclosure as powerful as SB 52, so sign the petition to thank them today!

  • Oregon University System: Don't raise tuition again!
The Oregon State Board of Higher Education will vote this week on whether to raise tuition again, but tuition is already too high. If the Oregon University System approves the hike, tuition at the University of Oregon next fall will be DOUBLE what it was 10 years ago. Oregon students are deep in debt, and many are being priced out of a degree altogether. That's too steep a price for Oregon to pay. Oregon students need debt-free higher education now!

  • Pepperdine Law: Support Senator Warren's Bank on Student Loans Fairness Act
The interest rate on federal subsidized Stafford student loans is set to increase from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1st. If Congress doesn't act soon, millions of college students will see their student loan payments jump. Some argue that it's too expensive to keep government loans at low interest rates, but the federal government makes low interest loans all the time—just not to everyone. Big banks can borrow money through the Federal Reserve discount window at a rate of about 0.75%. Wall Street banks—the ones that wrecked our economy—should not be getting a better interest rate on their government loans than young people trying to go to college. Support Senator Elizabeth Warren's Bank on Students Loan Fairness Act to let students take advantage of the same low rates offered to banks for one year while Congress finds a fair, long-term solution on student loan interest rates.
