Dr. David Sager was terminated without explanation from his position as Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Family Services by Commissioner Randy Parker. The termination followed improvements in procedures, cost-savings, and morale. This is larger than the termination of one stellar public servant. How Louisiana compares nationally: • Teen birth rate is higher than the national average; in 2010, teen birth rate was 6th highest in the nation. • Rates of infection for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis — sexually transmitted infections that can impact fertility — are among the highest in the USA. • Two of its cities (Baton Rouge and New Orleans) rank 2nd and 3rd highest in HIV infection rate in the county. There is already a serious shortage of health care providers in the state, and as a result, too many women in Louisiana aren’t getting access to high-quality, affordable health care. Opportunity to expand care while decreasing costs: • Passing Medicaid legislation could expand access to health care to as many as 400,000 people. • Medicaid expansion would also bring 15.7 billion dollars into the Louisiana economy over the next decade, which will help create jobs and support businesses. • For every $1 spent on family planning services, like those Planned Parenthood provides, an estimated $12 is saved in costs associated with unintended pregnancies. Louisiana's legislature has an opportunity to EXPAND access to health care to an additional 400,000 Louisianans by expanding Medicaid. What are they doing instead? We had a mini-mart/gas station in Old Farm that closed a couple of years ago. It was recently purchased and is designated to become a liquor store. California is getting ready to strike a blow against Citizens United by passing SB 52, the California DISCLOSE Act, a bill that would shine a bright light on the shadowy interests who depend on secrecy to influence elections. The vote on the Senate floor is next Thursday or Friday. SB 52 (authored by Senators Mark Leno and Jerry Hill, sponsored by the California Clean Money Campaign, and endorsed by over 300 organizations and leaders) would mandate clear and prominent disclosure of who is behind political TV, radio, print, and mass mailer ads - on the ads themselves. SB 52 will stop special interests from hiding behind fake committee names by requiring ads to show their actual original contributors. Our elected officials deserve praise when they stand up for transparency and disclosure as powerful as SB 52, so sign the petition to thank them today!

Cash for Clunkers was a great program. It solved several problems simultaneously. It helped American carmakers, and those whose jobs are tied to them. It helped car owners. It was great for the environment. It removed polluters and gas guzzlers from the road, reduced dependence on fossil fuel and reduced the release of greenhouse gas. Poor people want, need and deserve eco-friendly transportation, too.

On May 24, a truck from Calgary-based Mullen Trucking carrying housing for oil drilling equipment to Vancouver, Washington struck and took out the Skagit River bridge on I5. This is a preview of the problems that Washington state is going to experience if we allow the construction and expansion of coal and oil terminals. Our roads can't handle the huge and heavy loading of tar sands drilling equipment. Our rails and rail crossings can't handle the wear and tear that will come with coal and oil trains. Finally and most importantly, the atmosphere on our planet can't handle the carbon dioxide load that will follow if we maintain our fossil fuel addiction. We say NO to coal and oil trains in Washington state now. We say NO to oil and coal terminals in Washington state now. We say NO to fracking and tar sand destruction. Let's establish Washington state as a leader in green power by committing to an extensive transition to sustainable energy. Let's build our power system components in Washington state. We need good jobs in Washington state. Let's install a sustainable energy grid that the whole world can use as a model for transition from fossil fuel to clean sustainable energy. We need to fix our infrastructure in Washington state. Let's start by establishing the energy infrastructure for the 21st century.
