• Politicians' salaries and benefits
    It is time any and all representatives voted into office stop voting themselves raises and added benefits. No pay raises should be allowed unless put up for a vote by those who elected these people. It is time politicitians who love to talk so much about accountability show they are also responsible and willing do as they say.

  • REPAYING FOR 44 YEARS!
    I took out a student loan in 1969. It's 2013 and I'm still paying on it. I asked the STATE OF NEW YORK if we could work a deal out, where I can pay a percentage of the balance which is about $9000. "NO YOU MUST PAY IT OFF IN ENTITRELY!" was the response I received. I'm 62 now. So the loan I took out in 1969 will not be paid off while I'm alive. There must be people in a similar situation. Even though I work in health care, shouldn't I r3eceive the same forgiveness as teacher got in the 60's and 70's?

    A bill has been introduced in the state legislature that would require minors to get parental consent, and notarized consent in some cases, before they could receive testing for STDs or birth control. Not only would this bill needlessly shame teenagers when they are most vulnerable, it would also put the health and well-being of all North Carolinians at risk.

  • Gerrymandering of federal congressional districts
    Democracy CANNOT exist when any political party has the congressional districts gerrymandered in such a way that only their candidates can be elected. There is hardly any reason to vote in state elections when this situation exists, the fix is in and it is by law.

    A child dies every 5 seconds on planet earth from starvation. The world has the resources and logistical capability to stop this NOW. This is the most urgent ethical issue on planet earth. The private organizatons that have worked so hard - and often heroically - to prevent these deaths, simply do not have the resources and logistical capabilities to stop these deaths. Only the coordinated actions of the countries of the world can do that.

    More than half of the country understands that marijuana is not as harmful as once thought, yet our jails are filled with non-violent "criminals", some just for possession. Along with revenues from the sales of a taxed product, and tax money saved from closing down legal shops and used to enforce laws against illegal dealers, we would see a boom in "green jobs", which will be one more step to help our great Nation to get out from under this sluggish economy.

    On May 1, 2013, the NC Renewable Energy Program was killed by Republican Senators. It was in place from 2007 until now, during which there was bipartisan support in a largely Democratic North Carolina legislature. Now, the Republicans have taken a narrow, exclusionary view of North Carolina's energy future. They've taken away any push to have the electric companies use renewable energy.
