Congress Should Increase Funding for Mental Health ServicesIn response to the recent shootings some legislators have pointed to increased mental health services as an alternative solution to gun control. Even though the “link” between mental illness and gun violence is not very strong (1), mental illness affects over 1 in 4 Americans (2). Regardless of whether those politicians are correct to link mental illness to gun violence, as a problem affecting over 1 in 4 Americans it deserves Congress’ attention. Allow Bankruptcy and forgiveness for all Student LoansIndividuals must be allowed to declare bankruptcy on students loans. Presently, it is nearly impossible to meet the standards for discharge. Courts use different tests to evaluate whether a borrower has shown undue hardship and the “evaluation” based on the Brunner test is too restrictive and unfair to the vast number of students who need this option now, so they may maintain a standard of living presently and in the future. Presently, many students have over $200K in debt with incomes as low as $50K or less. They are merely meeting their living expenses and often unable to save for retirement. These aging individuals are strapped with student loans with no chance of repaying them. The only ones benefiting from this debt are benefiting are the lenders, who continue to add interest upon interest to these ever increasing debts. The lenders know that the federal government will be the one's to pay these student loans off, but at a much higher price. Reduce the years for student loan forgiveness and make all present forgiveness laws proactive. Presently, students can have loans forgiven after 120 payments, but this new law does not help those with loans from the 80s and 90s. The laws need to be proactive and allow older loans to be forgiven due to low wages, etc.2 of 100 SignaturesCreated by B. A.

Stop Raiding Medical Marijuana DispensariesMedical marijuana is legal in several states, including California, while remaining illegal under federal law. As a result, the dispensary where I get my prescribed medication for Trigeminal Neuralgia – a virtually untreatable form of neurolytic pain – was raided by DEA agents on April 16, 2013, one day after the Boston bombings in a shameful waste of federal law enforcement resources needed elsewhere. During the election campaign, President Obama roundly hinted that raiding medical marijuana dispensaries would not be a priority of his administration. Evidently, that wasn't true. All that would be needed to resolve the conflict between federal and state regulations would a reclassification of Marijuana from Schedule One narcotics, such as heroin, to Schedule Two, which recognizes its medical usefulness and allows it to be available by prescription. All that's lacking to make this commonsense reform is the political will.7 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Ira Levine

Rep. DeLauro: Pledge to Vote Against Social Security CutsReps. Alan Grayson and Mark Takano have been asking members of Congress to pledge to vote against any proposal to cancel the sequester that involves cutting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits. Over 40 members have signed the letter or made their own pledges. Rep. DeLauro says that she opposes President Obama's proposal to switch to the chained CPI to calculate cost of living adjustments to Social Security benefits—which would effectively cut benefits—but she has yet to pledge to vote against it. We think she ought to join the club. More on the Grayson-Takano letter: http://act.boldprogressives.org/survey/survey_ss_grayson/#fullletter128 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Megan Iorio

Low INCOME BREATHLYZERI can't afford new tax by the state on installed breathlyzer's in car's. Thirty dollars a month is a lot of money. Soon I probably won't be able to continue to drive my car. I do not make a lot of money. Thirty dollars is a new pair of shoes for my son, food money, gas to get to work. I am not an alcoholic. I had bad lawyering! If I could of walked back into that court room after I signed the paper. i would of. No one would let me ripe it up. I am doing my sentenced because of Melanie's law. So unfair. Maybe someone has a love one you know who just doesn't fit the criteria. I know too many people do drink and drive and lives are lost. Thank the Lord my family has never had that knock at our door. I am just worried about the financial burden, I have put upon my family. I don't know how much longer I can afford the extra $87.00 per month. Like I said gas, electric, food, clothing????????????????????????????????????????????????My pay check doesn't go up, but everything else does. It is hard to survive my rent is $1500.00 per month.1 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Donna Mangiacotti

Stand-Alone bills & inititatives. My petition deals with the problems that arise when something totally unrelated to a bill or initiative is tacked onto that bill or initiative. prior to voting. Many a good bill has been defeated because something unacceptable has been added and many bad bills have been passed because something very important (probably deserving a separate bill of its own) is tacked onto it. I believe that bills should be STAND ALONE, with no additions, riders or non-related issues attached.2 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Sandra Louth
