  • Fund Addiction Treatment
Add a 1% sales tax to tobacco & alcohol products. Earmark the revene to fund addiction treatment at facilities such as The Jefferson Alcohol & Drug Abuse Center (JADAC). The trend lately has been to fund facilities such as The Healing Place because its cheaper to do so, but they cannot provide a safe medically supervised detoxification, among other things. I work at JADAC & it saddens me to see this resource continually underfunded. The population we serve is poorly represented in the state legislature.

  • NO Smart Meters!
This new technology has documented safety and privacy rights issues and had NOT been proven 100% safe. They could also be easily hacked. Besides, by definition this is a wire tapping device and should be illegal...and to force it on customers is a bold, arrogant assumption that we will knowingly consent to such a disrespectful "business decision" on the part of electric company. The $20 "meter reading fee" is nothing but extortion for our safety, security and privacy.

  • Make crossing Light St at Henrietta/Warren safe for pedestrians
Many people walk across Light St at E Henrietta St and Warren Ave in Federal Hill every day -- walking their kids to school, heading to work, going up to the Park, walking their dogs, pushing strollers, to the shops on Charles St. This crossing is dangerous because of the staggered ways E Henrietta St and Warren Ave intersect with Light St. There is no crosswalk, and because of on-street parking, you have to edge out into traffic to see oncoming vehicle traffic clearly. Further, because Henrietta is a popular route out of the neighborhood to Russell St and the highways, vehicles coming from Warren have to perform an awkward zig-zag, which is risky and unpredictable (are they going to turn on to Henrietta or continue on Light?) to walkers in the intersection. Map: http://i.imgur.com/A3tXtAY.jpg Pedestrian safety and traffic calming physical improvements are necessary to continue to make this popular intersection safe for our community. Here is a very crude illustration of the proposal: http://i.imgur.com/rExdJ9I.jpg

  • Defend the Privacy and Freedom of Tennessee Women
SB632, sponsored by state Sen. Jim Tracy would require women to get an ultrasound before terminating a pregnancy, or have the fetus described to them by a doctor. SB632 is simply another attempt by a conservative Tennessee lawmaker to interfere with the personal lives of women and place the state between women and their physicians. SB632 is clearly unconstitutional under Tennessee’s right to privacy. Safe and legal access to reproductive health care services should not be subject to the whims of legislators or their political ambitions. As State Representative Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville) said, "If Sen. Tracy is truly interested in preventing abortions, he should take the money that we will have to pay to defend this potentially unconstitutional law and put it toward preventative contraception, prenatal health care, and pre-K education... As a woman and a teacher, I wish my fellow legislators would focus less time on trying to play doctor, and more time on helping women gain access to quality health care, a good education, and higher-paying jobs."
