• Solidarity with NFL referees
NFL owners are trying to cut the pensions and benefits of their referees. But when the refs objected, the owners locked them out and brought in replacements. Already, missed calls have altered the outcomes of some of the games. It won't be long before players start to get hurt because the replacements lose control of a game. Skill and experience go a long way in some jobs. Some of these replacements the NFL hired had been fired from the Lingerie Football League for incompetence. Seriously. Yes, football is only a game. But when one worker's rights are threatened, all workers' rights are threatened. The NFL's refs are our brothers in the fight for worker protections. Join the referees in solidarity. Sign our petition, and we'll deliver it to NFL headquarters before kickoff of next week's Monday Night Football game.

  • Scott Tipton do you support teachers? Moochers?
I whole heartedly disagree with Romney that 47% of the people in this country are moochers. Romney is dangerous for the country. I was a teacher, and worry about the Republican attitudes regarding public servants. When dd they work with the future leaders of this country? (muchless remain unbiased in the way they choose to present politcs in the classroom. I am not a moocher.

  • Tell the IRS to enforce the Johnson Amendment
On Sunday, October 7, one thousand pastors across the nation are planning on giving political "recommendations" to their congregations of whom to vote for this November. The conservative Christian group Alliance Defending Freedom has formed what they are calling "Pulpit Freedom Sunday" in order to try and get the IRS to overturn the Johnson Amendment (that's the rule that takes away the tax exempt status of any church or charitable organization which endorses a political candidate). Tell the IRS to enforce this Amendment by forcing these churches to pay taxes on their income.

  • Tell Mike Huckabee it's time to stop spreading Islamophobia
Mike Huckabee recently put up a song on his website, set to Billy Joel's "We didn't start the fire," which refers to the Middle East as, "Nutjobs stuck in the 13th century," and the land as, "Not fit for man nor beast." The song is insulting and should be taken down.

  • License Certified Professional Midwives in Maryland
Access to midwives in Maryland is limited. Maternity care is in crisis. Maternal mortality and infant mortality rates are unacceptably high. Nations with better maternal and infant mortality rates employ midwives as their primary maternity care providers. Maryland Families for Safe Birth (www.marylandfamiliesforsafebirth.org), a nonprofit, grassroots organization whose mission is to increase access to midwives in Maryland, is leading the effort to license Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) in Maryland as 26 other states already do. Licensing CPMs will increase access to midwives. Certified Professional Midwives are trained and credentialed to offer expert care to women for pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. They provide affordable care that is prevention oriented with particular attention to education and support for the mother. CPM care is proven to be safe and improve breastfeeding success rates. CPMs earn the only nationally recognized midwife certification that requires out-of-hospital birth training. They practice autonomously and consult with other health care providers as needed. In Maryland, Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are the only midwives currently licensed to attend women in their homes or birth centers. CNMs routinely turn clients away due to full practices. Maryland has only one freestanding birth center. Licensing CPMs will increase access to midwives for families who choose homebirth and birth center births. It is expected that immediately after licensure legislation is passed 30-40 CPMs will seek licensing in Maryland. Over half of the birth centers in the United States are owned and operated by CPMs. It stands to reason that CPMs will open birth centers in Maryland as well. We therefore ask that the Maryland legislators vote YES to license CPMs in Maryland and vote YES to improve maternity care in Maryland.

  • Roger Goodell Resign as NFL Commissioner Immediately
It is very simple, Roger Goodell is making a mockery out of the NFL for the sake of money! There is no explanation that I can write here that can replace what has been witnessed by the eyes and ears of every NFL Fan around the World. Every team in the NFL, along with their fans, have suffered from his rule. Roger Goodell needs to be replaced!

  • Restore Emergency Unemployment Compensation and the Extended Benefits program before December 2012
Mr. President and Senate Members, In February 2012, Congress representatives drastically changed the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program, first, by reducing it and second, by bringing it to a halt on December 29, 2012. The Extended Benefits program was also stopped in August 2012 affecting every American counting on that income. If EUC08 is allowed to expire at the end of 2012, unemployed workers will only be eligible for regular state benefits or 26 weeks. In order to help, EDD webpages are directing Unemployed Americans like me to look for assistance for their families at other public and social services, such as counseling, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal, CalFresh, general relief, etc. To no fault of our own, we have been laid off, and subjected to presidential candidate's ridicule and misrepresentation while we desperately continue to look for the job that evades us. Do not forget the millions of Americans affected by this legislation during your campaign.
