Stop subscription inserts!Magazines insert several pieces of paper in every issue, not only newstand issues but subscribed issues. At the least these multiple inserts are annoying and wasteful. At the most tons upon tons of paper are tossed--and trees destroyed--for these redundant and unwanted inserts. We are asking all magazines (especially those who claim to be scientifically, health, and environmentally oriented) to stop using these inserts.2 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Marie Neer

Thorium Reactor ResearchChina dominates the rare earth element market. Rare Earth Elements are critical to high tech items (smart phones/tablets, ect)The US needs to re-start its rare earth element mines but a solution must be provided for the Thorium by-product. The best solution to this problem is to use Thorium in the next generation of nuclear reactors. The US explored this area but stopped in the early 1970 because Thorium reactors make no bomb material. In addition Thorium reactors use passive safety not active safety as is used in Uranium reactors. We need to have an adult disscussion of future energy policy, because the sun does not always shine and the wind does not always blow, we need a third option which does not include carbon.6 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Tim Pearson

Save Greenwich Village and NYU: Stop the Sexton PlanTell NYU's administration to abandon their multi-billion-dollar expansion plan to build more high-cost dorms, parking lots, and retail space, and tell them to focus on academic excellence. Thirty-seven of NYU's own departments have voted against the plan, yet President Sexton has not responded to his own faculty members. He has not provided any evidence that NYU can afford this plan. Make your voice heard, no matter who you are: you may be a New York City or Greenwich Village resident, NYU staff or alum, or you care about overdevelopment and the future of higher education. Don't allow university executives to build unnecessary high-rises by raising tuition and transforming the Village! This petition is organized by NYU Faculty Against the Sexton Plan. As teachers and researchers at NYU, we put education first, not real estate ventures. You can find out more about us at http://nyufasp.com/.913 of 1,000 SignaturesCreated by Miabi Chatterji

Who does your Congress person really serve? We Americans have all been held hostage by Congressmen who have sworn loyalty to a "pledge" to NEVER raise a tax. They swore this in deference to a Congressional pledge to work for the best interests of the American people. They didn't quite, but may still drive our country over the cliff if the necessary revenue isn't restored to support our country in defense, education and citizens' health needs.1 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Don Spangler

Oakland and Berkeley City Councils: Defend the 92% against the Safeway CorporationMy family and I live in Rockridge. We and others have systematically surveyed members of the community, and the members of other communities, who hang out with friends, walk and shop along College Avenue. 92% have answered that they oppose Safeway's plan for a three-fold expansion of its store. After hearing of our opposition at five community meetings, Safeway stopped meeting with us and set about imposing their idea about what is best for us. The Berkeley City Council opposes the expansion for the same reason we do: the threatened expansion (1) overrides zoning restriction that limit store size, vehicular congestion and pollution; (2) endangers foot and bicycle traffic on the already heavily-traveled, two lane College Avenue; (3) sabotages twenty five years of neighborhood self-determination; and (4) imperils the small independent businesses that spend their profits in the community. Safeway’s quest for unlimited profits by attracting more vehicular traffic from greater distances, and its refusal to locate in West and East Oakland to serve the needs of residents living in “food deserts,” does not equal the public good. The issue is currently before the Oakland City Council and we need your help.175 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Peter Haberfeld

Make medical billings user friendly, so patients can pay!Our son recently suffered traumatic brain injury and miraculously survived. However, it has taken months to determine whether we have all the bills, whom to contact (13 separate billing agencies), what actual costs are, whether there could be adjustments, payment plans (all different), how to pay, and how to avoid bills going to collection agencies. This is often an impossible task for patients recovering from illness or injury or, as in the case of our son, trying to work to pay the bills. It is a lose-lose situation if people get trapped in the maze and give up - doctors and hospitals don't get paid and individuals suffer destroyed credit and, often, refusal of future treatment. Both elderly and younger patients are affected, but those who are not yet on Medicare are most vulnerable because of so many separate billing requirements. Why make the system so punitive for those who actually want to pay their bills?3 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Jane Nighbert

Social Security FavoritismWhy is it that some people are approved rigth away, and most people are denied time and time again, those being the people who need it the most. With my disability not only am I unable to get a job, but I am unable to qualify for affordable insurance or pay for the medication that I am required to take daily. Head injuries are unlike all other types of disablities. No one has to accomodate or know how to for that matter in the work force.4 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Marci D. Huebert

I want to invest in a clean energy future nowClean Energy Victory Bonds would extend proven government programs that create clean energy and jobs, including the Investment Tax Credit and Production Tax Credit, for a decade. The funds raised from the bonds would also help homeowners make energy efficiency upgrades to their homes and purchase plug-in and electric cars. The bonds will help ensure American competitiveness in the growing clean energy and transportation industries and will help create over 1.7 million jobs throughout the Unites States.12 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Matt Jennings

PUC allows First Energy to collect for no serviceWhen I inquired about terminating the electric service to my seasonal business for the winter, I was informed that I would still have to pay anyway. They base it on one half of your highest peak of use. How can you charge for a service you are not getting? If you terminate the service, they still charge you anyway. Incredible. Help me stop First Energy's practice of charging for no service.13 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Lynn Brown

Mandatory personal finance education for all HS studentsI think everyone has been personally affected by this issue. All teenagers coming out of high school should have a basic understanding of personal finance, including credit cards, credit scores, interest rates, loans, saving for retirement, 401K's and basic saving strategies. They should also be given specific examples of strategies for success and, conversely, what not to do. It is all too easy for young kids to make mistakes that take them years, sometimes decades from which to recover, and it is imperative that we arm them with the knowledge to make the best decisions possible in their early lives, especially in regard to their finances.2 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Philip
