• Gunsanity
There is an extremely vocal crowd of gun-loving Americans out there. They have succeeded in turning a lot of the country into the Wild West. Evey day we here about another mass shooting incident. In any other civilized country people would realize that making guns available to anyone who wants one is recipe for disaster. In Australia it only took one such incident to get laws passed severly restricting gun availability. There is no justification for the easy availability of guns in our country. The 2nd Amendment clearly states that the right to bear arms is in the context of a "well-trained militia". It's obvious that meant you can have a gun with proper training and oversight and responsibility. The authors of the 2nd Amendmendment certainly could not have foreseen a future where there are more guns than people in the United States.

  • Restoring Patriotism
At the ripe old age of 65, I've watched American Patriotism dwindle over the years to what I now consider to be the lowest point in my lifetime. The biggest reason for this is that Americans now tend to identify with smaller and smaller groups rather than with Americans as a whole. (i.e. African-Americans, Latino-Americans, Christian Americans, non-Christian-Americans), etc. This began with McCarthyism in the 1950's when the words 'under God' were inserted into The Pledge of Allegiance. Restoring The Pledge of Allegiance to it's pre-1954 wording (without 'under God') will go a long way in uniting Americans AS Americans FIRST, without the sub-groups.

  • Maryland Offshore Wind Farm
The Maryland State Assembly recently failed to pass a bill for an offshore wind farm. We have a significant source of renewalbe energy, and we need to start using it as soon as possible. All obstacles become meaningless when we remember that we must stop environmental destruction or there's nothing left for any of us of any political party or persuasion, or our children. This is a way to move off of fossil fuel dependence.

  • Keep Political Ads off PBS!
Sesame Street, brought to you by Mitt Romney. Up next, Downton Abbey, but first, a word from Obama’s Super PAC. This is no joke! A U.S. appeals court struck down a ban on political ads on public broadcasting. That means your local PBS could start running nasty attack ads right away. Many Americans turn to public TV or radio to escape the offensive political ads that have flooded commercial stations. Polluting public programming with these misleading and negative ads is not in keeping with the original vision of noncommercial broadcasting.  An overwhelming majority of Americans say public funding for public media is money well spent. We need to invest in public media, not open it up to dirty Super PAC money. Please sign this petition now. Tell PBS to keep their stations free of nasty attack ads. -- This petition is in partnership with Free Press (www.freepress.net).

  • Save Detroit
The city of Detroit is crime infested, with thousands of abandon and burned out homes, in addition to being littered with trash. Currently, we are facing bankruptcy while officials are stealing funds. City employees and administrators should be residents of the city or the positions they hold should be manned by residents who are concerned with the welfare of this City. Join me in removing non-residents from administration and public service positions, it is obvious they are not concerned with welfare of the citizens or the City.

  • Stop Use of TOXIC Rubber Mulch on Playgrounds
Rubber mulch (recycled ground tires) is highly toxic to our children, the environment, and groundwater. It is a profit-making scam for the tire companies, manufacturers, and city governments for the mere disposal of the material at the cost of our children's health and pollution of the soil and groundwater. The EPA, USDA Agricultural Research Center, and various independent studies agree that scrap tires should never be used in gardens or landscaping due to the volatile chemicals they leach that are hazardous to our health and environment. Please sign this petition to let politicians know that we will not stand for our children's play areas becoming a dumping site for this toxic material. The EPA's website says about scrap tires: "Illegal tire dumping pollutes ravines, woods, deserts and empty lots. For those reasons, most states have passed scrap tire regulations requiring proper management." The Hazards of Rubber Mulch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1F3FnQM1dms

  • Stop Television Ads for Politicians
The United States of America should follow France's policy against using media to advertise to win political offices. Our politicians could better use that money helping charities, bringing down the debt or at least hiring people to spread the news of what their personal ideas would be to better our predicament rather than a platform for mud-slinging, etc.
