• Target Should Let Its Employees Use Their Employee Discounts With Food Stamps
Target employees get a 10% discount but only if they pay with cash, check, or a Target Red Card. Up till recently employees could also use their discount with their food stamp benefits. Many Target retail employees are below the poverty line and get food stamp benefits. It is simply unfair to charge the poorest employees more, than those employees who can actually afford to buy food with a redcard, or cash.

  • Stop the Dismantling of Public Education! Keep LAUSD School Staffs From Being Given Pink Slips!
Although my experience is with the Los Angeles Unified School District, districts all over the country are laying off teachers, nurses, and other school site staff not because there are real budget cuts but because superintendents play footsie with for-profit schools in order to make money off of public education for themselves, which violates the very idea of public education. For-profit schools don't abide by the collective bargaining contracts that public school teachers and other school site staff enjoy, including medical benefits. Teachers, nurses, janitors provide the environment that educate American youth. No of us living would be able to live life without the education provided by teachers and the environments maintained by other school site staff. In California, AB 114 was passed to provide additional funding for all California public schools at the 2009-2010 Schoo Year levels, bringing additional funds to reinstate all staff that had been laid off last year but many districts, especially LAUSD, are withholding that money for rehiring laid off staff. This is unconscionable while many new for-profit charter schools are being created by public school districts paying teachers and other staff the minimum salaries possible.

  • FORECLOSURE FRAUD PETITION
The Mortgage Loan Crisis, which led to the current financial crisis and recession, has lead to a Foreclosure Crisis in the County of Santa Barbara. Foreclosure sales and evictions have occurred, and are continuing to occur, that are clearly irregular and illegal. People are losing their homes without due process of law. On March 12th, Occupy Santa Barbara, along with Occupy groups from across California, simultaneously rallied at county recorder offices across the State to call attention to the massive and ongoing foreclosure fraud. This petition was presented to 3 County officials (the Recorder, DA, and Sherriff) on the 12th and will be presented to the Board of Supervisors on April 3rd. You can find more info about the event and the full text of the petition at http://occupysb.org/foreclosures/.

  • Petition to Eliminate Trash Collection Fee
Landlords in the City of Lewiston are facing greater difficulty maintaining quality housing amidst the current economic climate. As a City with the highest poverty rates in two of the most densely populated census tracts, the rental market is unable to respond to increases in operating expenses by spreading costs amongst tenants who have limited ability to pay. Landlords are asking the City of Lewiston to remove the trash collection fees that were formerly included as a benefit of being a tax payer.
