• OPEN GOVERNMENT NOT FOR SALE!!
PLEASE KILL SB 2927 SD-2 OPEN GOVERNMENT NOT FOR SALE Donovan Dela Cruz is the author of Hawaii Senate Bill 2927. This is an outright assault on open government. Senate Bill 2927 exempts projects from public scrutiny, public collaboration, and accountability. It slams the door to public engagement but opens the doors for mischief to developers.

  • Funding Community & Technical Colleges
Two year colleges should be protected by constitutional mandate, just as K-12. Currently there is no mandate to fund them at an existence level. They must grovel for every dime, even though they have a faster and more efficient turn around to prepare their students for gainful employment and become tax payers. The cut backs over the last three years set their ability to provide adequate classes back 20 years. Student tuition has increased well over 20% during this time!

  • Respect gay and lesbian rights in Idaho.
Gays and lesbians deserve the same civil and political rights that we all enjoy. Government should not impede upon these rights. It is not the role of the government to decide who gets to love each other and who doesn't. We should recognize these marriages as valid and make them equal to any other marriage.

  • Support a Reduction in Alaska Student Loan Rates
Today you can get a loan to buy a used car for less than 3%, but current and recent Alaska Student Loan Corporation loan rates range from roughly 6.25% to 9%. Please support House Bill 272 to reduce the principal of your Alaska student loan annually by 2.5%, and help Alaskans stay in Alaska and return to Alaska. A 2.5% annual principal reduction is the equivalent of a 3% reduction in the student loan interest rate. Used cars are great, but education loans should include repayment terms that attract Alaskans back to the state, and encourage them to stay. To learn more go to http://akdemocrats.org/rep_gara/.

  • Tell Governor Parnell You Support Access to Your Fishing Streams
In many states public access to fishing streams is blocked by the sale of land to private landowners who restrict access, require exorbitant fees, or rent space for short periods of time. House Bill 144 would protect and enhance the right of Alaskans to enjoy our unparalleled fishing streams into the future by helping ensure that fishing stream access is not sold or developed. The bill has passed both houses unanimously, and now we respectfully request that the Governor join Alaskans and Alaska’s fishing groups in support of this bill by signing this legislation into law. Polite letters to the Governor at sean.parnell @alaska.gov and [email protected] are encouraged so he knows the measure enjoys public support. To learn more go to http://akdemocrats.org/rep_gara/.

  • Molly's Law
The City of Elk Point currently has no law that requires an in- home day care provider to be registered. Registration or licensing would give Child Protective Services the authority to take action should a care provider be criminally charged. Currently, there is no agency that has that authority unless the day care is registered.

  • US Congress and President: Fix the Indefinite Detention and Unconstitutional Parts of the NDAA 2012
On March 1, 2012, Indefinite Detention became the law of the land! There are reasons to fear it will be used to restrict freedom of speech and assembly of US citizens. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA 2012), now authorizes the US government to treat suspected terrorists by a different standard. Under this law, people, even US citizens, can be detained indefinitely by the US military and, according to recent statements by US Attorney General Eric Holder, even killed without a trial to prove their guilt. They can also be tried by a Military Commission (fewer due process rights and the Judge and “Jury” are military officers) and can be sent into the custody of foreign governments. These provisions are contrary to Constitutionally granted 5th and 6th Amendment rights of legal counsel, due process and speedy and public trial by an impartial jury. This petition asks the US Congress and the President, in compliance with their oath to support and defend the Constitution, to change the provisions of NDAA 2012 that authorize Government actions that are in violation of our Constitutional rights.
