Senate Bill 6442, sponsored by Sen. Steve Hobbs, eliminates K-12 school employees’ current health care system and forces everyone into a costly new plan run by the state health care bureaucracy. It will cost Washington taxpayers $45 million in new cost, increase school employees' insurance costs and reduce their health care benefits. It also eliminates employer health care coverage for K-12 employees who work less than half time.

In the middle of the night on Friday, March 2, the Republicans passed their version of a state budget: a Wisconsin-style attack on public school employees, students and collective bargaining – and educators’ health care benefits. This budget is similar to what Gov. Scott Walker did to educators and public workers in Wisconsin. If anti-union legislators in Washington get their way now, just think what could happen after the general election in November! We, the educators and public education supporters of the State of Washington, urge Senate Democrats and fair-minded Republicans to oppose these attacks on public education, collective bargaining and school employees’ health care benefits.

In South Carolina, unemployment insurance as we know it is on the chopping block. Over 200,000 South Carolinians are currently unemployed. These are our friends, neighbors and family members who are struggling to find work. But instead of helping create good jobs, right-wing legislators and Gov. Haley have proposed a slew of destructive bills this year—blaming jobless workers and their families for an economic downturn they didn’t create. Their latest stunt? A bill which would require unemployed workers to pass drug tests to get their unemployment insurance, look for only full-time employment opportunities after a certain period and force them to take minimum wage work after a short period of time on unemployment. It's time for South Carolina lawmakers to stop these attacks and focus on real policies that create good jobs for South Carolinians.
