  • Better Pay for Adjuncts: Stop our Exploitation
Teacher working conditions are student learning conditions. Adjuncts teaching college students have more than doubled since 1970. Today, contingent faculty teaches 75% of classes nationwide, yet we are paid shamefully little in comparison to our tenured or tenure track counterparts. According to the Coalition on the Academic Workforce (http://www.academicworkforce.org/CAW_portrait_2012.pdf), on average, we are paid $2700 per course with no benefits. Multiply this by a full load of courses per year, and what do we get? Of course, we usually have limits on courses too. So as you can see, we do not get a living wage! We have almost no chance for advancement, we have insecure continuity with our semester-to-semester schedule, and we have relatively little say on anything pertaining to our university or college. Moreover, because we are compensated so unequally, we need to hold several teaching positions in order to support ourselves, making our workload unfeasible. How can we survive? If you want a better education for students, then you must demand better pay and status for the majority of faculty teaching in today's institutions of higher education across the country. Demand better salaries for the underpaid and undervalued adjuncts, the contingency labor force that teaches most of the imperative core classes students need in order to succeed in today's competitive academic climate.

  • Tax Social Security Equally for Rich and Poor
Currently those who make less than $200,000 (approx) pay 6-1/2% (approx) on 100% of their income. Those who earn more pay that same tax on only the first $200,000 of their income. Why do the poorest of us pay Social Secuity tax on 100% of our income and the wealthy pay the tax on only a portion of theirs??

  • Make Banks & Private Mortgage Companies work with Homeowners
Banks received big bailouts with the implied idea that they must give consumers relief. Private mortgage companies may not have received a bailout, but with the economy still not rebounding fast enough people are still losing their homes at an alarming rate. Unfortuantely neither of them are required to work with homeowners facing hardships and or foreclosure. Please sign the petition to help people stay in their homes, enough is enough!

  • Stop discrimination against elderly coop homeowners!
Homeowners over 65 years old are supposed to be able to get reverse mortgages guaranteed by HUD, called HECM's for short which stands for Home Equity Conversion Mortgages. In 2008 Congress included eligibility for seniors who are homeowners in cooperative housing. But so far HUD has failed to issue regulations which are needed to tell mortgage lenders how to handle HECM's for coops. Thus coop seniors like me cannot get the reverse mortgages for which we qualify in theory. This petition asks the White House to force HUD to do its job.

Religious institutions have got a free ride long enough. They should pay taxes like any other business. What does separation of church and state mean if religious organizations are granted special privileges?
