• Amazon.com - Retire Alexa!
At a time when we can digitally become more diverse, we’re stepping backwards and creating more sexism in our daily lives. The latest and worst example is Alexa from Amazon. It is a fairly common woman's name. There are no options to change the voice to male or gender-neutral. To not provide these options is an archaic statement that a woman’s role is to serve, to be on call, to be told what to do. That is the message Alexa and other female only automated voices are training younger people today to accept. Amazon can do better than this. Please join in asking Amazon to retire the name Alexa plus provide options for male and gender-neutral voices. Add your name to this petition that will be delivered to Amazon. Also please share this petition! Tell this story! It’s an easy fix. Given the opportunity, there’s a good chance Amazon will step up to do what is right. We just have to collectively ask for it. • Stop Deporting Military Spouses
Over the last two decades, hundreds of thousands of American men and women have risked their lives serving in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. For the most part, they have done so secure in the knowledge that if they are killed, their country will provide for their families. For those whose spouses are undocumented immigrants, however, this is an obligation our government has not met. Last year, Univision reported that nearly 12,000 military spouses were in deportation proceedings. Earlier this year, the Trump administration announced plans to remove protections for the spouses of servicemen and women currently deployed. Cuauhtemoc “Temo” Juarez served in combat as a Marine in Iraq from 2003 to 2005. While he was deployed overseas, his wife Alejandra cared for their infant daughter Pamela, now a high school senior. They later had another daughter Estela, now ten years old. Temo and both children are US citizens, but Alejandra, an undocumented immigrant, was deported to Mexico in 2018 despite having no criminal record. Estela, too young to be left alone while Temo is working, also moved to Mexico with Alejandra. Cindy Furman served in the Air Force in Iraq. She met her future husband Demetry, who was serving in the Canadian military, while he trained with US forces. He held US security clearances and later served in Afghanistan as part of the US-led coalition. In 2018, he was arrested in Ohio and later deported. His crime? A minor drug conviction in Canada in 1992, for which he served 28 days of community service and paid a fine. He was pardoned in 2002, but is still ineligible for a visa as a result. He now lives in Ontario. Cindy, suffering from health problems, remained in Ohio to be near her adult children, and is unable to travel to visit her husband. Alejandra and Demetry are two of the many military spouses who have been deported, tearing apart the families of those who have served this country. The Protect Patriot Spouses Act, introduced by Congressman Darren Soto of Florida, would allow many of these spouses to pursue legal permanent residency, an opportunity they do not have under current immigration law. https://www.npr.org/2019/06/27/736362986/trump-wants-to-withdraw-deportation-protections-for-families-of-active-troops https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/557?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22%5C%22protect+patriot+spouses%5C%22%22%5D%7D&s=1&r=1

It is cruel to pull whales out of their natural habitat and force them to perform. These animals are meant to live in the ocean where they can swim freely and be with their families.

  • Impeach Trump NOW Before He Gets Us All Killed!!!
Trump has clearly demonstrated his rapidly failing mental facilities by 1) his recent congratulations to Poland for being invaded in 1939; 2) for repeatedly lying over and over again about how he has "never heard of a Category 5 Hurricane (this is the FOURTH one to hit the US during his first term!!!); and perhaps the most shocking, 3) for his INSANE and potentially DEADLY insistence that Hurricane Dorian posed a threat to Alabama. Think about Orson Wells and the panic he created with "War of the Worlds" - this could have been MUCH worse. It should not matter whether or not the Senate, who are Trumps and Putin's puppets at this point, will do anything. That is not the point. What will matter in history is who stood up to oppose him, and who stood silently, wishing he would just go away. Go on the record NOW! This man has the key to our nuclear arsenal, and it should be taken away immediately!!!

  • GoFundMe: Don't Let Killer Cops Profit
We demand that GoFundMe immediately suspend the "Officer Daniel Pantaleo's family help fund," fundraiser that is currently being hosted on your site. Daniel Pantaleo murdered Eric Garner. I watched the video, I heard Garner say "I can't breathe," 11 times, but Pantaleo refused to stop. I watched Eric Garner die, over allegedly selling loose cigarettes, a petty misdemeanor at best. GoFundMe needs to immediately suspend the "Officer Daniel Pantaleo's family help fund," fundraiser for the following reasons: 1. The medical examiner ruled Eric Garner's death a homicide. 2. The NYPD's administrative judge ruled that Pantaleo should be fired for his use of the illegal chokehold, which led to the untimely death of Eric Garner. Stating that Pantaleo was "untruthful," in his description of the events that took place. 3. NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill fired Pantaleo for his role in the murder of Eric Garner on August 19, 2019. GoFundMe's policy clearly states you prohibit "items that promote hate, violence, racial intolerance, or the financial exploitation of a crime," and Daniel Pantaleo committed murder on video, and was fired from his job because of it. Pantaleo has been receiving a salary the past five years, and GoFundMe should not continue to allow him to profit off of the murder of an innocent man! GoFundMe needs to refund all the money collected, and stop this fundraiser right now!

  • Tell Congress to stand against the influence of white supremacy and the NRA
Why has Congress been unable to take even the smallest step forward in reducing gun violence, despite strong public support for measures like banning military-style semi-automatic assault rifles and high capacity magazines (67%) and universal background checks (97%)? Here’s the truth: White supremacy has been at the root of this inaction throughout our nation’s history, and the National Rifle Association (NRA) utilizes racist and xenophobic messaging to mobilize and grow its base of activists. Until we acknowledge this truth and call out white supremacy and the racist tactics of the NRA, we will continue to suffer the deadly consequences as elected leaders are immobilized by their influence. The Second Amendment was in part originally added to the U.S. Constitution to appease southern colonies that feared the “tyranny” of a federal government that could expropriate their armed militias -- militias they stated they needed in order to control people who were enslaved. [1] 18th-century regulations governing militias specifically prohibited Native American and Black people from participating as arms-bearing members. [2] And the National Rifle Association, whose mission is defending Second Amendment rights, has a long, well-documented record of employing racist and xenophobic rhetoric and tactics [3] that directly draws from the United States’ shameful history of slavery and racism, serving as dog whistles to the many white supremacists in its base of supporters. It’s time to face the truth and call out how the Second Amendment was used to continue slavery and how it currently is being invoked by the NRA, encouraging white supremacists to commit domestic terrorism. • Stop Trump's internet censorship plan
Donald Trump and Ajit Pai already dealt a huge blow to internet freedom when they ended net neutrality last year. This new proposal is a dramatic escalation in Trump's attack on free speech. His executive order would allow the FCC and FTC, led by his handpicked cronies, to initiate regulatory action against companies that don't police speech online in exactly the way Trump wants. This is an authoritarian proposal that would erode our freedoms online at precisely the moment when a free and open internet is most essential.

  • The Impact of 30 Years: Null and Void
After 30 years of outstanding service as the Director of the Award-winning North Carolina A&T State Gospel Choir (GC) and the recent Golden Anniversary celebration, Ron Jones was informed by the administration that he was “retiring”, effective immediately. The administration continued to insist that Ron chose to retire and have been vague when asked about the abruptness of the decision, only stating that the choir is heading in a “new direction”. Throughout this ordeal, Ron has maintained that he did not retire, nor did he tender a letter of resignation. Needless to say, this abrupt decision left the current gospel choir frustrated and confused, while the University sought to replace Ron. Although, we as alumni and supporters of the choir understand that the position has now been filled and that the current choir has resumed normal function, continuing its legacy, we want it to be known that the manner in which Mr. Jones was released was without cause, disrespectful and took no consideration into the 30 years of service that he has rendered, not just to the University, but the surrounding Greensboro community and the world. The way in which Mr. Jones was released, showed that the service and dedication that Ron rendered was completely disregarded by the University and subsequently showed that they did not care. This type of action is not representative of the institution that we know and love. This type of action does not constitute what "Aggies Do." This type of action, in know way, exemplifies "Aggie Pride." If you are in agreement, please join us.
