• EARTH FIRST
Today, as our country and the world experience the results of a global economy we are also experiencing the disastrous results of what an ethics free global economy means to the environment, and to the wonderful biodiversity that is now being threatened by the endless footprint that mankind is leaving upon the earth, and by the drastic loss of irreplaceable biodiversity on this planet. The world needs to come together, and compose a constitution for the planet, and create permanent limitations on how, and where man's footprint is or is not allowed to intrude into areas rich with plant and animal life.

  • Stop the deforestation of the Berkeley/Oakland Hills
The Hills Conservation Network has been fighting to prevent FEMA from allowing UC/Oakland to use federal disaster mitigation funds to clearcut ALL of the tall trees in the hills. They are targeting eucalyptus, pines, and acacia for complete eradication, not because of a fire risk, but because these species are despised by the native plant restoration community. They have dismissed proposed "species neutral" fire mitigation strategies that would be cheaper, would use far fewer herbicides, and would be far more effective in lessening fire risk because the native plant restoration agenda wouldn't be advanced.

  • End Big Oil's free pass in California
California is the 4th-largest oil-producing state, but it is the ONLY state that does NOT tax Big Oil. We could raise $2 billion per year to begin repairing the damage of previous cuts to public education by passing a tax on oil extraction. Why doesn't California make Big Oil pay for the privilege of profiting off our natural resources? Sarah Palin signed Alaska's oil severance tax of 25%! Texas charges 7.5%. State Senator Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa) has proposed Senate Bill 241, which would tax oil extraction at a modest 9.9%. Public higher education would receive 93% of revenues, and 7% would go to the Department of Parks and Recreation.

  • Stop the Spectra pipeline.
The Spectra Pipeline, a high-pressure gas pipeline under construction in Manhattan's West Village, slated to go online in November 2013, poses a grave and immediate risk to New York residents. Construction of this pipeline puts corporate profits ahead of the health and safety of New York residents. The high level of radon present in the gas that would be transmitted by the Spectra Pipeline from the Marcellus Shale into the homes and businesses of New Yorkers is a serious threat to public health. In 2010 a pipeline of similar diameter and pressure exploded in suburban San Bruno, California, destroying an entire neighborhood and killing eight people. An explosion of that magnitude in densely populated Manhattan would cause incalculable loss of life and property and would devastate the city. Building this pipeline will make New York City further dependent upon fossil fuels that poison our water, pollute our air and threaten catastrophic climate change. This will also discourage New York from making the urgently needed shift to sustainable alternatives, such as wind, solar, and bio-diesel. • BAN FRACKING IN CALIFORNIA
There are so many unanswered questions regarding fracking for gas. Will we find out in 20 years that fracking caused water pollution and more earthquakes in California? Let's urge Assemblyman Ken Cooley to support alternative sources of energy instead of fracking.
