• MAKING TRADER JOE'S MORE SUSTAINABLE
We are concerned that Trader Joe's, such a huge supplier of foods to ours and many other communities, does not follow as much sustainable guidelines as it should. I recently stopped buying milk there due to it going from cartons to plastic, which uses petroleum and is much worse for the environment. They reach a lot of people and can be a good example of more sustainable business practices. It really counts when you're so big

  • Archer Braid
The Archer Braid has been in the planning process for many years, but now some special interests in Haile Plantation are trying to move the trail and not connect this diverse community of 10,000 residents. This trail is in the public right of way and many in Haile support the trail, but the combined HOA boards are working to move the trail outside of neighborhood. This trail is an amenity that would increase safety, connect people with businesses, work and recreation, and would contribute to the overall health of the community.

  • The Koch Challenge
The Koch Brothers have spent untold millions to elect and keep Gov Walker, and are holding secret meetings with Sen Rojo the Clown. How about if the one million WI workers who signed the recall petitions donated $1 each to a trust fund to buy woodland and wetlands, and demanded the Koch brothers to match what was raised since they are such good Christians and looking out for the state's best interests?

  • Thorium-based Molten Salt Reactors
On the one hand, Americans - and humans in general - have benefited enormously from zero-emission nuclear energy. On the other hand, the waste that could plague us for millions of years combined with nuclear proliferation make it a sharp, double-edged sword. How about looking at thorium-based molten salt reactors? We can get rid of 100% of the long-term waste left over from conventional nuclear energy. Plus, with the molten salt fuel acting as its own coolant, it's not plagued by the one issue common to all the safety problems we've ever had: using very high-pressure water as a coolant. It's about the same price as coal: 2 cents per kilowatt hour. Finally, it burns up all the nasty, weapons-grade material that is harvested from conventional nuclear energy. Let's give it a shot!

  • Obama: Save the Arctic from Shell Oil
On August 31, the Obama administration, over the opposition of environmental organizations, granted Shell Oil a permit to drill for oil beneath the frozen Chukchi Sea. A leak or spill in this part of the Arctic Ocean could kill thousands of marine mammals and Polar bears, yet Shell's planned oil containment ship has notified even been certified by the Coast Guard. We're calling on President Obama to revoke Shell's permit until scientific study can insure that a leak or spill can be contained and cleaned up before it kills endangered and protected Arctic species.

  • IUCN: Take action against the naval base on Jeju Island
From September 6-15, some 10,000 environmentalists will converge on Jeju Island to attend the World Conservation Congress (WCC) organized by the oldest environmental organization, the International Union of the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The WCC will take place only a few minutes away from Gangjeong where the construction of a naval base is threatening one of the planet’s last great soft coral reefs and other coastal treasures, assaulting numerous endangered species and destroying a 400-year old sustainable community of local farmers and fishers. Unfortunately, the IUCN leadership has ignored or whitewashed the naval base. You can help give voice to the Gangjeong villagers who have been beaten and silenced, not just by their own government, but now kept out by the world’s largest environmental organization. Add your name to this letter to IUCN Director-General, Julia Marton-Lefevre and President Ashok Khosl, to be hand delivered by Gangjeong village mayor Kang Dong-kyun at the IUCN Congress.

  • PHASE OUT NUCLEAR POWER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
We have seen enough of this uncontrollable and dastardly form of energy to know that nuclear power is indeed a deal made with the devil. 3 Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima have made it clear that no one can guarantee nuclear safety either in its operations or its disposal. A human being who lives a few decades cannot say what will happen to nuclear waste that lasts up to 250,000 years!
