On December 31, 2011, President Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2012 into law. This Act would allow for the detainment of U.S. Citizens, even in times of non-emergency. Several states, including Virginia, Utah, and New York are now creating laws to protect the average U.S. citizen from the overreaching aspects of this law that infringe on our Constitutional rights.

Dear Fellow Philadelphians, The Supreme Court has ruled that corporations are essentially "persons" with the same constitutional rights that real people (like you and me) have and that money is equivalent to "free speech." So now, corporations can spend as much money as they want to influence elections and our elected officials. It is time to get corporate money and influence out of politics and give democracy back to "We the People” by amending the Constitution. To date, many cities and communities across our nation have passed resolutions calling for this amendment. As the birthplace of the Constitution, Philadelphia needs to stand up and be heard on this issue. So, we are asking you to sign this petition to our City Council to request a resolution that urges Congress to pass a constitutional amendment that would overturn ‘Citizens United” and clarify that the First Amendment is for real people, not corporations. The use of the filibuster rule, as now being practiced in the US Senate is creating governmental paralysis at a time when The United States of America faces many challenges, the global Great Recession, rising oil/gas prices, environmental challenges, and educational decline. The American People MUST have a functioning government now more than ever and reforming the filibuster is one step towards fulfilling that need. The filibuster should not be eliminated as it protects the minority from a potentially oppressive majority, but it MUST be reformed.

The the misuse of the Filibuster is allowing an obnoxious and unprincipled minority to hijack our democracy. The effects of this are causing great loss and unnecessary suffering to a large number of people.
