I'm concerned about the increasing number of deaths and injuries due to gun violence in Illinois each year. In 2014 alone, there were 1,179 gun deaths in the state. It is far too easy for criminals to obtain guns. According to a report of the University of Chicago Crime Lab, 20% of all guns recovered from crime scenes between 2009 and 2013 came from four dealers in Illinois. Requiring gun dealers to be licensed would hold these bad apple dealers accountable, and reduce the number of illegal guns coming into our communities.

My wife teaches at the University of Montevallo in Alabama. We both believe that this bill will make her workplace more dangerous, not safer. The presence of guns in classrooms can also create a threatening atmosphere that stifles the free exchange of ideas and opinions critical to learning and may intimidate students and professors alike.

When infringement of one occurs, others will follow. There should be NO modification or codification of any infringements whatsoever.

Enough with this madness. If the FBI considers you too dangerous to board a plane, you should not be able to purchase a gun. Period. The NRA has a chokehold on Congress, but PA Governor Tom Wolf can act right now to prevent the next mass shooting or terrorist attack by banning people on the federal terrorism watch list from legally buying guns. Connecticut's governor has already taken action. Now it's time for Pennsylvania to follow his lead.

As part of the MoveOn delegation of Responsible Gun Owners who went to DC in November to encourage the Executive Order and as one whose family has been affected by gun violence, I feel that the time is now to begin stemming the tide of gun violence in the United States.

As a lifelong gun owner, hunter, and also a victim of gun violence, these executive actions are much needed and don't restrict my rights at all. They make me feel better as a gun owner, in that we're helping keep guns from criminals and other dangerous people. I began shooting guns and hunting as early back as I can remember. I was, until several years ago, an NRA member as well. I agree with police chiefs supporting the president's executive actions on background checks and keeping guns from criminals and other dangerous people. These actions are simply modernizations of our existing gun laws. But Republicans in Congress are vowing to use “every tool in the toolkit to stop him,” including legislative maneuvers and suing the White House. Let’s stand together to defend these new executive actions to reduce gun violence.

President Obama announced a number of executive actions this week designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people. While these are important measures much more needs to be done to stem the tide of gun violence in this country. Our legislators need to do their job and pass meaningful, commonsense gun laws to protect our communities. President Obama has pledged that "I will take every action I can as a citizen. I will not campaign for, vote for, or support any candidate, even in my own party, who does not support commonsense gun reform" and advises us that "all of us need to demand leaders brave enough to stand up to the gun lobby's lies. All of us need to stand up and protect our fellow citizens. All of us need to demand that governors, mayors and our representative in Congress do their part." We know the only way to change the epidemic of gun violence in this country is to make this a “single issue” during the next election, so I stand with President Obama to demonstrate that "the way Washington changes is when people vote."

Dear Mr. Zuckerberg and Ms. Bickert, I was very disturbed by the front page story in my local newspaper, The Santa Fe New Mexican, today. An intrepid reporter took a close look at a local Facebook group with over 14,000 members. The group is an online swap service where members can trade and sell furniture, clothes, baby gear...and guns. These gun sales are conducted without background checks. Anyone, ANYONE, including convicted felons can buy a gun via Facebook, no questions asked. As part of that policy change posters are required to include a reminder that buyers of guns must comply with all gun laws. This is a weak attempt at best, even when it is followed, but the review of posts by The New Mexican shows that many posts do not include any such language. If Facebook cannot enforce its already lenient policies in regards to gun sales then it is time for them to prohibit the practice entirely. Craigslist has done so as have many newspaper classified sections. We love social media as a way of connecting family, friends, and like-minded people. We do not support its use as a way to avoid complying with federal gun laws and background checks. Please prohibit the sales of guns on your site. Thank you.

Right now a convicted felon, domestic violence offender or a teenager can walk into a gun show in New Mexico and buy a firearm....no questions asked. It is time to close the gun show loophole. Passing this bill into law will help keep our children, families and communities safer from gun violence!

My friends, family and I have all lost loved ones to gun violence in the last 20 years. The experience is brutal and tragic for the victims, and emotionally devastating for the survivors. Currently our Congress restricts research of the causes of gun violence through specious language in the Dickey amendment. If Congress won't remove that rider, the only recourse we have is being brave enough to risk more funds being cut out of unconscionably cynical support of the gun lobby by our legislators. We say the risk is worth it. And if legislators cut funding, we will protest with new allies like cancer researchers and others who are being unnecessarily punished.
