• Help Americans become familiar with the Metric System
American children do very poorly in science classes because the only time they are required to see metric units being used is in school. That puts them at a disadvantage compared to children who grow up in metric countries. Also US industry can only sell inch-pound labeled merchandise to four percent of the world's population. By using metric units, they vastly increase the number of their potential customers.

  • Save the Church of St. Martin de Dauzats
We live next door to this charming 150-year-old church in southwestern France and don't wish to see it lost forever as a piece of French "patrimoine"--the cultural and spiritual heritage of the south Tarn. Deconsecrated now, it could serve as a salle des expositions--exhibition space--or meeting hall. The Town Hall government is currently intending to see it off for transformation into a private home.

  • Coming of Age in America
The Barmitzvah that I attended moved me to think we all could use such a ceremony, shaping our self image as adults. I feel there is nothing similar and that we could benefit by writing the text, asking ourselves at the same time just what it is to grow up, and what we should be asking of our children. Turning it into a tradition wouldn't be so hard. And what a good reason to party!

  • East Hampton Town Board: Stop Aircraft Noise, Now!
To the East Hampton Town board members: East Hampton Airport was traditionally intended to serve local pilot-owned and operated aircraft for personal recreation and transportation. Yet, aircraft noise due to unintended and non-traditional users of East Hampton Airport -- commercially operated helicopters, jets, and seaplanes -- has grown to become an intolerable burden on the peaceful enjoyment of our homes and gardens, both near to and distant from the airport, upon our beaches, waterways, and preserved open space, and upon wildlife habitat throughout the East End. This occurred over time, without local design or consent, due to Federal Aviation Administration control over the airport. Attempts to protect homes by directing traffic over preserved open space and wildlife habitat are both unacceptable and a demonstrated failure. Now that FAA control has lapsed, it is imperative that the East Hampton Town Board immediately return East Hampton Airport to its traditional and intended use, reclaiming our precious peace and quiet, by imposing a curfew and excluding helicopters and other aircraft types noisier than the pilot-owned and operated aircraft for which the airport was designed and intended.

2014 The Cowboy Rides Away, and George Strait called an end to his touring, but I am not ready to see him go just yet. I didn't get a chance to go to any of the concerts on the "Cowboy Rides Away Tour", due to illness, so I would like to see him one more time, hopefully a 2016 reunion tour.

  • Bringing service dogs home for troops.
Dogs that are trained as service dogs are closer to their owners than even our beloved pets. It's cruel to separate veterans from their dogs who have been not just a source of comfort, but sometimes actual life savers. Allowing the vets to bring their dogs home with them is a tangible way of saying "Thank you for your service."

  • Keep the Half Moon Ship on the Hudson River
Due to financial hardships, the Board of Directors of the New Netherlands Museum has decided to move the Half Moon replica ship to the Dutch city of Hoorn in 2015. Many in New York want to find a way to keep this vital piece of New York's early history on the Hudson River and in the Capital Region.

  • End Unequal Religious Expression at the Valley Hospital (Ridgewood, NJ)
The Valley Hospital’s policy to allow religious imagery for Hanukkah but to forbid the religious imagery for Christmas is inconsistent and insensitive. Both Hanukkah and Christmas are distinctly religious holidays replete with their own rich history of religious imagery. To reduce Hanukkah and Christmas to mere secular symbolic reminders is disrespectful to those who celebrate each. Hanukkah is a Jewish celebration of the preservation of Judaism during a time of forced religious assimilation. It is a celebration of the miracle of light in the midst of darkness. Christmas is the distinctly Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is the celebration of God born as a child in the city of Bethlehem as written in Holy Scripture. The Valley Hospital has determined that Christmas is accurately represented with a decorated tree, wreathes and poinsettias. These secular symbols do not remind us of the birth of a person, Jesus Christ. Depictions of this holy event, such as nativity scenes and other Christian imagery, are not authorized by the Valley Hospital. On the other hand, Hanukkah is accurately represented at the Valley Hospital with a purely religious motif, the Hanukiah or Hanukkah Menorah. Why is it that Christians cannot also observe their holiday according to Holy Scripture while at the Valley Hospital? It is our wish that the Valley Hospital give equal representation to all of the faiths in our community. While we welcome Jewish religious symbolism at the hospital, the clear omission of Christian imagery is insensitive. The decorations for Christmas and Hanukkah in public spaces at the Valley Hospital should be faithful to the religions they represent. To emphasize one faith tradition by accurately representing it, while minimizing another by turning it into a secular cultural holiday is an injustice to all people of faith. We ask that the Valley Hospital, its administration, its trustees and staff permit the display of Christian religious imagery depicting the Nativity of Christ, which Christians celebrate on Christmas. Please sign this petition to end unequal religious expression at the Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
