If children stay away from strangers, they will not be sexually abused.Fact:National statistics indicate that in approximately 88 percent of the cases, the offender is known to the victim. He/she is usually a relative, family member, family friend, baby-sitter or older friend of the child. Myth #2:Children provoke sexual abuse by their seductive behavior.Fact:Seductive behavior is not the cause. Responsibility for the act lies with the offender. Sexual abuse sexually exploits a child not developmentally capable of understanding or resisting and/or who may be psychologically or socially dependent on the offender. Myth #3:The majority of child sexual abuse victims tell someone about the abuse.Fact:According to a study by Dr. David Finkelhor, close to 2/3 of all child victims may not tell their parents or anyone else because they fear being blamed, punished or not believed. Myth#4:Men and women sexually abuse children equally.Fact:Men are offenders 94 percent of the time in cases of child sexual abuse. Men sexually abuse both male and female children. Seventy-five percent of male offenders are married or have consenting sexual relationships. Only about 4 percent of same-sex abuse involves homosexual perpetrators; 96 percent of the perpetrators are heterosexual. Myth #5:If the children did not want it, they could say, "Stop!"Fact:Children generally do not question the behavior of adults, having been taught to obey them. They are coerced by bribes, threats and use of a position of authority.Myth #6:All sexual abuse victims are girls.Fact:Studies on child sexual abuse indicate one in three females under the age of 18 and one in four males under the age of 18 are child sexual abuse victims. Myth #7:Family sexual abuse is an isolated, one-time incident.Fact:Studies indicate that most child sexual abuse continues for at least two years before it is reported. And in most cases, it doesn't stop until it's reported. Myth #8:In family sexual abuse, the "non-offending" parent always knows.Fact:While some "non-offending" parents know and even support the offender's actions, many, because of their lack of awareness, may suspect something is wrong, but are unclear as to what it is or what to do. Myth #9:Family sexual abuse only happens in low-income families.Fact:Family sexual abuse crosses all classes of society. There is no race, social, or economic class that is immune to family sexual abuse. Incest is estimated to occur in 14 percent of all families. Up to 25 percent of American children are incest victims. Myth #10:Non-violent sexual behavior between a child and adult is not damaging to the child.Fact:Nearly all victims will experience confusion, shame, guilt, anger, and a poor self-image. Child sexual abuse can result in long-term relationship problems and be perpetuated from generation to generation. Dr. Nicholas Groth, who has worked extensively with sexual offenders, reports that 60 percent of convicted sexual offenders have reported histories of child sexual abuse victimization. Prevention of Pet OverpopulationI studied abroad this summer through Purdue University, and it was a Global Leadership Program in Costa Rica. We all learned about the tico's culture, and how to be more sustainable. Now, everyone who went to Costa Rica has to step up and be leader, and try to impact the world in their own unique way. My major is wildlife, and my passion is animals, so I wanted my project to focus on helping animals, and pet overpopulation seemed like the perfect idea. It seemed like a good idea, because not much is being done about this problem, and not many people are very educated about it. This problem does not just affect homeless animals, but it affects the entire environment. It is a problem, that if not fixed, it could grow into something much worse than just an abundant amount of homeless animals, like disrupt the environments food chain. According to my home town veterinarian, Dr. Komorowski, he does not think people understand how many truck loads of dead animals are hauled out of animal shelters every month. That is why I a starting this petition, and doing everything in my power to make an impact on our world. If i do not try, then who will?177 of 200 SignaturesCreated by Brittney Frenger

Tell Defense Contractor: Stop Demanding That Tortured Abu Ghraib Prisoners Pay Your Legal ExpensesIn an outlandishly shameless case of adding insult to injury, the American defense contractor CACI is demanding that four Abu Ghraib inmates — who sued the company over allegations that its employees tortured them — pay its legal expenses. The lawsuit was recently dismissed over matters of jurisdiction, without addressing the issue of torture. The former prisoners — who were never charged with a crime — have appealed, but now CACI wants them to pay $15,580 of its legal costs. By the way, CACI’s 2012 revenue of $3.8 billion breaks down to $7,230 per minute. Whatever its true role at Abu Ghraib, how can CACI demand money from innocent torture victims when the company makes enough to cover those expenses — courtesy of the American taxpayers, no less — every two minutes? Tell CACI chairman J. P. London to let it go.78 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Glenn

Vermont--Tell Haagen Dazs, Edy's, and Baskin Robbins: No Extreme Genetic Engineering in our Ice C...Natural vanilla flavor comes from a vanilla bean, right? Maybe not for long -- a new genetically engineered ingredient, straight out of a petri dish, is about to enter our favorite foods, from ice cream to birthday cake. Synbio vanilla -- produced by a form of extreme genetic engineering called “synthetic biology” -- is stranger than science fiction, but regulators will still let food companies call it "natural". So we're asking major ice cream companies like Haagen Dazs, Edy’s, Baskin Robbins and others not to use this experimental genetically engineered vanilla in their products. The truth is, this new vanilla doesn’t even come from a plant. Instead, it is made in labs using synthetic DNA and genetically engineered yeast that exists nowhere in nature. What’s worse, the FDA hasn’t even bothered to test this laboratory creation as a new product. Instead the agency will likely approve it as “Generally Regarded as Safe”. As the first major use of synthetic biology in our food, synbio vanilla could set a dangerous precedent and open the floodgates to allow more synthetic, genetically engineered ingredients labeled as “natural”. And if all of this wasn’t bad enough, this new synbio vanilla could speed rainforest destruction, and harm sustainable farmers and poor communities that rely on rainforest-raised vanilla beans to survive. Ice cream companies are one of the biggest purchasers of vanilla flavoring and we need your help to send them a strong message: don't use this unnatural “synbio vanilla” in your ice cream.1,250 of 2,000 SignaturesCreated by Peter Stocker

GMO apples in baby food? Tell Gerber "No!"Soon Snow White may not be the only one with reason to be concerned about apples. A new genetically engineered Arctic Apple® could be approved to enter our food supply as early as December, and, like other GMO foods, it won’t be labeled and won’t have undergone independent safety testing. This GMO apple was genetically engineered via a new, virtually untested experimental technique called RNA interference, which many scientists are concerned may have negative unintended impacts on human health. The Arctic Apple® was not designed for increased nutritional value, but for purely cosmetic purposes -- it was genetically engineered to not brown when cut. However, browning in apples can be prevented naturally by applying lemon juice or another source of vitamin C -- making this new risky genetically engineered apple unnecessary. Apples already carry some of the highest levels of toxic pesticide residues, many of them linked to hormone disruption, reproductive harm and even ADHD. Pound for pound, kids eat more food and have higher levels of pesticide exposure -- and we know that early life exposures to toxic pesticides can be especially harmful. Apple growers and consumers say they don’t need or want this GMO apple, but it will soon be in everything from baby food to school lunches to Happy Meals, posing risks to our health, our environment and apple farmers across the United States. Baby food companies are one of the largest buyers of apples, and Gerber is one of the world’s largest baby food companies. Gerber has stated that it doesn't currently use GMO fruits or vegetables in their baby food. Until now that's been easy because there weren't any staple GMO fruits or vegetables, like apples, on the market. Please tell Gerber: we don't want risky GMO apples in its baby food.46 of 100 SignaturesCreated by Peter Stocker

BAN GMOS from the USAThe science is proving more and more the incredibly dangerous environment we are creating by having GMOS be legal in this country. We are losing bees at an unprecedented rate, people are becoming more and more ill and there is ample evidence that the GMOS are creating alot of this sickness. We need to stop putting corporate interests ahead of human interests. Please, please help me send President Obama a direct message. We, the People of the United States of America, DO NOT want to eat Genetically Modified Organisms. We want whole, healthy, organic food to eat. We demand that GMOS be banned permanently from our food chain. NOW before it's too late.260 of 300 SignaturesCreated by Wendy Post
