Rep. Steve King's (IA-R) ugly history of anti-immigrant rhetoric reached rock bottom this week after saying that some DREAMers have "calves the size of cantaloupes because they're hauling 75 pounds of marijuana across the desert." Not only did he claim that for every valedictorian DREAMer there are 100 more carrying drugs across the border, but he then doubled-down by claiming that he didn't "yet know of anyone who has raised a logical argument against" his gross misstatement. Rep. King's attack is nothing new. Last year he compared immigrants to dogs, and then in an Univision interview claimed he meant it as a compliment. Last month he voted to defund DACA, called a group of DREAMers visiting his office "illegal aliens," compared it to an invasion, and then wondered why they hadn't been arrested yet. And now he's accusing those same young Americans of being drug runners. House leaders Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) quickly repudiated Rep. King's statements, but when pressed by a reporter about whether Rep. King would keep his seat on the powerful House Judiciary Committee, Speaker Boehner simply brushed off the question. We need House leaders who lead. Instead of elevating Republicans willing to engage in respectful debate, Speaker Boehner is giving Rep. King a platform to do nothing but spew his ugly views. We need Speaker Boehner to stand up to Rep. King and take control of his House. Tell Speaker Boehner that Rep. Steve King doesn't deserve a pedestal for hate. Remove Rep. Steve King from the powerful House Judiciary Committee now.

The GOP leadership has come out against his remarks, but they supported him when he introduced an amendment to defund DACA in the DHS appropriations bill. He then went on to a career of mismanaging Harvard so badly while behaving in such an openly sexist manner that he was forced out, before rejoining the White House Economic Council just in time to support a bailout for banks but not for homeowners. An Ohio woman returned from vacation to find that all of her belongings had been stolen, taken right out of her house. She knows who did it, but the local police aren't helping her. That's because Katie Barnett's stuff was not stolen by a burglar who slipped in under cover of darkness, but by a bank. First National Bank of Wellston foreclosed on her neighbor across the street—but got the wrong house, changed the locks and removed everything from Barnett's home. Meanwhile, the McArthur police chief has declared the case closed—even though Barnett doesn't have her stuff back and hasn't been paid. Katie estimates that she lost over $18,000 in personal property, itemized everything and has asked the bank to reimburse her. First National Bank has refused. A historic state office building in Nashville, TN is at risk for being demolished. The Cordell Hull building, constructed in 1952-53, is named for a Tennessee statesman, Cordell Hull (1871-1955). Hull was the longest serving United States Secretary of State, serving for a total of 11 years from 1933 -1944 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1945, Hull received the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in establishing the United Nations. He was referred to by President Roosevelt as the “Father of the United Nations.” The 59 year old Cordell Hull State Office Building at 425 5th Avenue North, Nashville, 37247 is one of several limestone buildings that frame the State Capitol, holding a distinctive presence on the Capitol grounds. According to Tim Walker, Executive Director of Metro Nashville Historical Commission, the Cordell Hull building is one of the best examples of mid-century modern architecture in the State. Several of its hallways along with restrooms are lined with marble, some of which is so rare that it can no longer be found in Tennessee. The are several statues on the Cordell grounds that honor many other Tennesseans. The building is eligible for listing in the National Registry of Historic Places. The building survived the 1998 F5 tornado in downtown Nashville. The Cordell Hull building is in need of repairs as is any building its age. Governor Bill Haslam’s administration is recommending that the building be torn down. The destruction of this stately civic building would be a major architectural loss to Nashville, to the State and perhaps even to the United States.
