  • Sidewalks on Jamacha Rd.
We need to have sidewalks installed on Jamacha Rd (west of the 125 freeway) in Spring Valley for the safety of all residents in the area as well as school kids from Mount Miguel High School and Avondale Elementary School. Jamacha Rd has many pedestrians walking this street are forced to walk on the street to get to their destination. Cars travel at 40-50 mph on average, creating a very dangerous situation. The bend near Darby Street creates a blind spot, especially when pedestrians are walking at night.

  • We Support Sidewalks in Minikahda Vista
The SLP City Council members need to hear from those of us who support the Connect the Park! plan in Minikahda Vista. The property owners on 40th St. have successfully petitioned against having sidewalks installed on that street. The current plan to install sidewalks on 39th St. is now in jeopardy, and Quentin Ave could be next. If we do not speak up, connecting the Park in Minikahda Vista may not happen.

  • Make Milwaukee Avenue safer for all
This section of Milwaukee Avenue on the northwest side has long been used as a four-lane expressway, encouraging high speed traffic. According to CDOT, in the last five years there have been 970 crashes on this stretch, including one fatality and 17 serious injuries. The road diet would change the street to two travel lanes and a turn lane, plus protected bike lanes, which could reduce crashes by 30 percent, CDOT’s Nate Roseberry said at a recent meeting. Removing one lane for cars and providing a center left-turn lane will make the road safer and will not hinder traffic. Two recent example of this: a lane was removed from Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago, thru the entire length of the loop. Similar road diets on Chicago streets have already proven successful in reducing speeding. For example, last year the transportation department installed protected bike lanes on a broad stretch of Vincennes between 103rd and 84th, which often functioned as a de-facto four-lane street and was plagued by dangerous driving and crashes. The project reconfigured the street as two clearly defined travel lanes and a turn lane, plus the protected bike lanes. After installation, average motor vehicle speeds between 7 and 8 a.m. dropped from 38 mph to 32 mph, the number of speeders was reduced from 624 to 390, and the number of vehicles going over 40 mph dropped from 192 to 54. Studies have shown that traffic moves just fine on two-lane streets with center turn lanes that see 20,000 or fewer motor vehicles per day, which is consistently the case on this stretch of Milwaukee. The road diet will likely have no negative impact on traffic flow. However, because there is currently too much capacity on Milwaukee north of Lawrence, speeding is encouraged, which results in the high crash rate. Average motor vehicle speeds estimated would from 38 mph to 32 mph, the number of speeders would be reduced and the number of vehicles going over 40 mph would drop significantly. Reducing the speed and making the lanes available for slower traffic actually enhances and improves business for many of the small independent businesses in this area. People travelling slowly actually see the many business available - they don't see this when travelling at high speed and needing to keep their eye on the road. Other features of the project could include new pavement, traffic signal coordination to facilitate vehicle flow, and redesigned bus stops that will make it easier to pick up passengers without blocking traffic. An additional community meeting will be held this spring, with construction starting in late 2014 or early 2015.

  • OPPOSITION TO PROPOSED REZONING OF THE OLD SCHOOL PROPERTY
My home is adjacent to the property in question. I am raising a family in this neighborhood. I am concerned there will be more traffic on our one way road, nighttime security lighting, extra noise, strangers in the neighborhood and lower property resale values. I also worry that the beautiful, historic old school property will not be preserved. Business does not belong in the heart of a family neighborhood or in the West Main Historic District.

  • No more dirty oil on our city's railways!
I live one mile from the Schuylkill River (pronounced "SKOOL-kill")On January 20th, I learned that a train carrying crude oil had derailed on a bridge near my house and was hanging over the river precariously. If that train had spilled, it would have been catastrophic for my neighborhood and my city. It could have caused a fireball like the kind that destroyed Lac-Megantic Quebec, causing 47 deaths. Even if there is no disaster and the fuel is burned as intended, it will cause even worse damage to our climate over time. We need to leave it in the ground. Please stop allowing extreme energy fuels to be shipped on our city's rails.

  • "STOP!! VERBAL/MENTAL ABUSE IN DAYCARE(S) !!"
I worked at a pre-school/daycare and seen many things I disagreed with !!Verbal/Mental/Physical abuse that wasn't being reported to the parents. I went to the director/owner with proof, witnesses, testimony and nothing was done !! I quit as of 1/15/14 after only working there for four months, because I WILL NOT BE A WITNESS & OR BE A PART OF VERBAL/MENTAL ABUSE TO CHILDREN. I felt it was my duty to contact the parents, no help to the pre-school, I took it upon myself to inform the most affected parents first. When I went to the owner she did "NOT" investigate this matter, nor did she care, because it wasn't affecting her or her family in the least bit. The owner instead stated to me on the day I finally "WOKE UP" & QUIT, she has the nerve to say, " I have known so, and so, for six years and clearly tells me she didn't believe me!!" I thought I was imagining her say that, she then boldly lies to my face and tells me that no one could collaborate my story which in FACT was a lie, three other employees did collaborate as to what I had told her, prior to our meeting. I called the state (pending investigation!) I will not tolerate what this person said and done to these innocent souls. The owner(s) and staff are also responsible for this evil entities actions and are just as guilty if not more so for quieting this evil beings actions!! I will make an example of these people and will not rest until our children get justice.! Oh, and must I mention the owner has the some nerve to serve me with an injunction of harassment, for loving and wanting to protect my class! All I want is the best and healthiest care for their well being!! How do these people sleep at night? I will NOT back off! When I was hired I had a duty and still have a duty to protect these children, I WILL NOT FAIL THEM AS MANY HAVE, BY TURNING A BLIND EYE, THOSE PEOPLE ARE JUST AS GUILTY IF NOT WORST FOR KEEPING THE ABUSE AND LIVING WITH IT, WHAT HAS OUR WORLD COME TO? I KNOW THAT ONE PERSON CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, & THAT DIFFERENCE WILL START WITH ME !! I CALLED SEVERAL LAWYERS IN SEVERAL STATES & DID YOU KNOW THAT YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO HAVE SOME KIND OF (SERIOUS INJURY) AS IF VERBAL/MENTAL ABUSE ISN'T SERIOUS ENOUGH. YOUR CHILD MUST HAVE A BROKEN BONE, HEAD INJURY, BLOOD FORCE TRAUMA, VISIBLE AND MULTIPLE CONTUSIONS, DEATH, ETC. IN ORDER TO SUE AND OR HOLD SOMEONE RESPONSIBLE? Why should it have to get to this point? No, child should have to endure this torture little alone have to go through the agony of mental abuse !! What about mental and verbal abuse, no one takes it serious, until it happens to YOU, or your family? Kids should have rights, too !! They are human beings !! If we don't help, who will? A parent most often never finds out their child is being mentally abused because most children who are being mentally/verbally abused are immune to such torture at the hands of their caregiver/handler because most often daycares except children as young as 3 months, so who knows how long that child has endured verbal/mental abuse? This abuse will play a vital role throughout the child's life. Your child can be verbally/mentally abused without you knowing it, the affects are so hidden in a child's life, that children most often protect the abuser without even knowing it. Most handlers do not have the patience to deal with children, they choose a job in this field for "POWER/CONTROL" these people most often don't have control of their lives so, they must control an innocent child's life. The intent of verbal abuse is often to prove rude, offensive, disparaging, defamatory, slanderous and scornful. It's overall intent is often to degrade the soul and mind of the individual to such a degree that they are without the ability to retaliate, verbal/mental abuse is a form of emtional abuse and, unlike physical abuse, it is not easily seen or detected. This is why this must NOT be tolerated and must be stopped, NOW! The abuse tears down the child, the effects on emotional, social, cognitive and psychological development can be profound. The effects of verbal abuse are immediate as the child internalizes the pain, these effects often extend into adulthood. It can also effect your child's happiness and success thoughout life. Children who are verbally abused have lost their sense of safety, the lack of security, breeds lack of confidence and the ability to feel good about themselves, children verbally defy all authority figures because of this. A child that has been effected will withdrawal from reality and will become depressed, angry, aggression may result in response to the verbal abuse. Over time, a verbally abused child may become verbally abusive toward younger siblings. He may turn on his parents as he ages and verbally abuse them in retaliation. It's learned behavior, we lead by example and unless the cycle is broken, it will likely be passed on from generation to generation. Verbal abuse scars, will be long lasting into adulthood, the hidden scars do not heal on their own. Verbal/mental abuse can have more negative impact then physical abuse, because we figure what we can't see won't hurt us, WRONG. Unresolved self-esteem issues can play out in childhood and even into adulthood. We cannot change the hurts from the past, we cannot change the damage people in daycares have done to children, but we can certainly change who we are now, and help change the future, we need to be the voice for all past, current and or future verbal/mental abused children. Our children are the future, if they have a negative opinion about themselves & if our children have no self esteem, no confidence, no sense of life, plain & simple no hope for the future because of what, one bad evil person implanted into our innocent child's brain year after year, month after month, day after day, hour after hour, minute after minute, second after second, wouldn't you believe what you are being told? (VERBAL & MENTAL ABUSE) A child knows no bet...

  • Save the Old Stone Building
We are starting this petition because we want to preserve and re-purpose the Old Stone Building as a multi-purpose space for the community of Upper Marlboro. The building is currently owned by Prince George's County and sustained damage when a car hit it. It is open to the elements and needs immediate repair. This building was listed as a contributing asset in the town's application for designation as a Historic District to the Department of the Interior, and it would be a shame to allow such a picturesque treasure to be demolished. We are fairly certain that the building could be repurposed for less than the amount it will cost the county to demolish it and haul it off. Our community will lose an architectural treasure and potential gathering place. We need your help in contacting the elected officials listed above and asking them to do the right thing: Save the Old Stone Building!

  • Mayor Buckhorn: Save the Historic Jackson Rooming House
The Historic Jackson Rooming house is a former boarding house in Tampa centered on Central Avenue. The Jackson house was the only house in the area where African Americans travelers like Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, and James Brown could find accommodations when segregation was in force in the south. Now the city has added thousands of dollars of fines and a short window to fix the building or they will demolish a historic site that was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic places in 2007. There is no rush to destroy history please allow volunteers ample time to get this house up to code.

  • Honor the Promise!
The time has come again to stand up for our individuals and their services. Last year, the concerted efforts of all of us helped us preserve the services to our individuals , and our jobs. Once again, we are being pushed to the brink of the same predicament we were in last year. Please, sign the online petition asking the Governor not to propose or support cuts in funding to supports and services for people with developmental disabilities. We need to illustrate that people with disabilities, their families and those who support them are united in supporting this message. We have hundreds of thousands of people across the state who support our goal of no more cuts, yet fewer than 5,000 people have taken less than a minute to join in and support this effort. We can do much better than that. Please help spread the word.
