On January 7, 2017, there was a horrific accident that took the life of Shania Costella. Shania’s vehicle hydroplaned on Road 426 and China Creek, and her vehicle rolled over the edge and into the creek. Her loss was felt across the mountain community, her high school, friends, and family. Shania’s sister Sahvannah survived the tragic accident, and together with Caleb Morgan, one of Shania’s friends, they have decided to start this petition to prevent any further accidents on this dangerous stretch of road. This curve is unsuspectingly sharp, and there have been numerous other accidents at this spot. We are urging you sign this petition to put up a guardrail at this location. Stringent job qualifications are required for most high-level positions in the government and in the private sector, but this is not so for the most critical position of all, the President of the US. The candidate for this office should at least be able to pass a basic civics exam, should know from experience what public service entails, and can prove to the voting public that he or she will not carry business conflicts of interest into the Oval Office.

Freedom of speech is becoming even more of a crime under Trump’s reign. This weekend during an anti-Syrian war protest, a Trump supporter antagonized peaceful protesters, storming the speakers’ platform and physically assaulting them to start a fight. Instead of helping, four police officers, tackled and brutalized Connell Crooms, one of the only Black protesters, and hit him so hard they knocked out his hearing aid. Bystander video footage shows officers beating him while he flailed helplessly and handcuffed on the ground. One officer punched Connell five times while other officers pinned him down.

As a retired public school teacher from Michigan, I am familiar with Betsy DeVos's position on education and fear that our public schools are endangered. I have witnessed charter schools at work in Michigan often times with poor results. Under the emergency manager in Michigan, schools have been taken over with private managers with poor results. If no profit is seen, the schools are then abandoned. We need education not profit in our schools.
