  • Save The Backpacks
It's a disgrace that we can't have backpacks at a school where we have so much to carry, chargers and all. Having a backpack is just common sense, especially since the school board doesn't even have enough lockers for each student.

  • Stop Voter Intimidation in the Chicago Teachers Union
Many of us teachers, myself included, intended to vote "yes" on a strike authorization this September. Many of us are disheartened by what we perceive to be the union pressuring us to vote in accordance with their political aims. Unions should by their very nature be democratic, and their methodology leaves a bad taste in our mouths.

  • Thank @SenatorDurbin and @SenatorKirk on #StopArmingSaudi
On September 21, the Senate voted on a resolution offered by Senators Chris Murphy [D-CT], Rand Paul [R-KY], Al Franken [D-MN], and Mike Lee [R-UT] to block an arms sale to Saudi Arabia. The Murphy-Paul resolution was a challenge to U.S. support and participation in the Saudi war against Houthi rebels in Yemen. The Saudi war in Yemen has been slammed by human rights groups for causing a humanitarian catastrophe, for violating international humanitarian law, and for violating U.S. laws against targeting civilians with U.S. weapons. Senator Durbin and Senator Kirk voted against killing the Murphy-Paul resolution, effectively voting against continuing to arm Saudi Arabia. [1] Thank Senator Durbin and Senator Kirk by signing our petition. • Protect The Delivery of Mail In The USA
There is a continuing effort to try and reduce the level of service the US Postal Service provides to the people of the USA. We believe this is against the Constitution of the United States and against the very moral fiber of our country. We support a vibrant public post office that delivers to every known address in America.

  • Mandatory Undoing Racism Workshops for Public Officials
Too much evidence of the lethal ramifications of racism has cost too many lives. Protests over deaths as a result of police brutality are increasing because not enough has been done to PREVENT the loss of more innocent black lives. The justice system has proven to remain on the side of injustice, seen in the paid administrative leave of officers who kill innocent black citizens while the families who have lost loved ones work harder to pay for funeral expenses for their killed family members. This is permitted throughout the country as we understand that police officers work in heightened tensions, and seek to preserve their lives as well. Let's bring value to Black Lives Matter and prove that they are included in "All Lives" through education and Undoing Racism workshops to expose all our citizens in public service to the vast disparities in privileges due to differences in skin tone.

  • End the tax-exempt status of the Donald J. Trump Foundation
Recently, The Washington Post revealed that Trump has spent $258,000 from his nonprofit, tax-exempt foundation to pay legal settlements for his own for-profit business. And he is actually bragging about it: boasting that this was good business sense because it was "other people's money." This outrageous and abundantly unethical behavior concerning tax-exempt organizations must not go unpunished. If the IRS finds that the $258,000 Trump used for personal court settlements violated the law, the self-proclaimed billionaire will likely skate by with a minimal fine and/or a mandate for reimbursement. These slaps on the wrist won't go far enough. The new cases of likely llegal behavior are just the most recent scandals involving Trump’s morally-bankrupt, tax-exempt foundation: * Just last week, New York's Attorney General Eric Schneiderman opened a full investigation into the foundation. * The foundation gave an illegal $25,000 campaign contribution to Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi just days before she decided not to investigate Trump University fraud charges in 2013. This gift was found to be in violation of IRS tax laws, and Trump was required to pay a penalty tax of $2,500 and reimburse his own foundation for the full $25,000. * He has blatantly used his foundation's money to buy himself personal items and memorabilia, such as a football helmet signed by former NFL quarterback, Tim Tebow. Enough is enough: Will you join me by signing the petition telling the IRS to immediately revoke the tax-exempt status for the Donald J. Trump Foundation?

  • Give employees paid time off to vote!
Four years ago, Regina got up early to vote before her workday started at Walmart. It ended up taking two hours to cast her ballot. Thankfully, she made it to work just in time, but voting shouldn’t be that stressful! No worker at Walmart, or any other business, should have to worry about facing a reprimand (or even losing a job) in order to exercise their right to vote. In the last presidential election, only about half of eligible voters across the U.S. turned out to vote, and in 2014 only one-third made it to the polls. Most American workers have little or no paid time off. In fact, 41% of them didn’t take a single day off in 2015. Additional factors like long lines, transportation challenges, and lack of childcare make voting quickly very difficult for low-wage workers. Voting is a right we hold dear in the U.S., but with too few voters making it to the polls each election year, we need to do everything we can to make sure people have the time they need to cast their ballot. Low-wage workers have it especially difficult because their work is typically less flexible and they are twice as likely to have to wait in long lines once they get to the polls. Companies like Walmart that employ a large number of low-wage workers have a great opportunity to do right by their employees—and by our democracy—by giving their employees paid time off to go vote!

  • Free Nanon M. Williams
Nanon McKewn Williams grew up in Los Angeles, California amid the violence and poverty that plagued the city. As a teenager, Nanon stood out for his academic and sporting achievements and dreamed of a career as a football player. He was an All-American and a recipient of more than 17 athletic scholarships. In 1992, when Nanon was only 17 years old, he was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death by the state of Texas. As a young man on death row, Nanon discovered a passion for writing and committed his life to bring a voice for those silenced. Although he began his imprisonment as an angry teenager, prone to fight any and everything, Nanon spent over a decade in complete solitary confinement rising above the ashes of dead men. He began writing poems, which he published in 2000 under the title The Ties That Bind Us and continued to write numerous essays as well as several other books. With his autobiography, Sill Surviving, his words exploded across the country and Nanon suddenly found himself further punished for daring to speak out against Texas Death Row, its brutal killing machine, and his awareness of mass incarceration. In fact, when he published The Darkest Hour book of death row stories and interviews, those who supported Nanon feared for his life. The things Nanon endured was far worse than most people could ever imagine, yet he pushed forward relentlessly. A newsletter, The Williams Reports that Nanon created in 1997 was banned by the Texas prison system, as was some of his books. In 2005, as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Roper V. Simmons, Nanon was one of the juveniles studied that led to the nation banning execution for juveniles. His sentence was commuted to capital life. Despite Nanon enduring years in solitary confinement and mind boggling acts of punishment, although knowing over 300 men executed, somehow Nanon continued to excel. Nanon was able to complete his G.E.D in 2007. He then began college courses offered at Trinity Valley Community College. He earned his Associate Degree in Liberal Arts and Science, and also completed trades in Horticulture and Cognitive Intervention. He began tutoring other young men and inspiring them to reach higher. He led by example. In 2009, Nanon desperately tried to pursue higher forms of education, he fought to be transferred from the biggest prison in Texas to another to attend a special program that offered a Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Sciences through the University of Houston-Clear Lake. It wasn’t surprising to anyone that Nanon graduated with high honors. He is now completing his Masters in Humanities and enrolling to pursue his Masters in Literature. Through writing, Nanon has found a way to endure life in prison, but he has now connected with countless people around the world. One of his books has been translated, he works with many universities around the country, his story is in a play called Lyrics Form Lockdown, and he teaches classes about segregation. He is now a Certified Peer Educator for sexually transmitted diseases and he recently published The Darkest Hour: Shedding Light on the impact of isolation and Death Row in Texas Prisons with Dr. Betty Gilmore, as well as a Children’s book called Peace People co-authored by Robyn Short. Nanon continues to work on booklets that show prisoners how to get resources, the need to recreate culture and his ability to educate other juveniles. Nanon has become one of the most inspiring people in the world from the most unlikely place. Many of us push for his freedom, but we all know that somehow he has found that in ways few people can ever understand!!

  • Reparations Now
Everyone from the Indians, Jewish and the Japanese has received Reparations for their being mistreated. It's time the African-Americans received their Reparations. Why are the African-Americans the only ones undeserving of Reparations when we have suffered the most, and still suffering today.
