On September 14th Cook County commissioners unanimously passed an ordinance to establish a direct access program for cook county. The program will expand health care access to 40,000 Cook County residents. This is a huge health care victory!

Monsanto and Bayer have announced plans to merge, creating what would be the world's largest seed and pesticide maker. Monsanto produces RoundUp, in addition to genetically-engineered seeds designed to withstand the herbicide. Bayer manufactures neonicotinoid pesticides, which have been implicated in bee die-offs. So what do we get in return for their profits? Fewer options and higher costs. The Monsanto-Bayer merger would create a near-monopoly over our food and agriculture. Tell American and European antitrust agencies to deny the merger.

The recent cuts to higher education have been devastating — valued faculty are leaving, and Illinois students are going to schools in other states. Meanwhile, young people and their families are being crushed by the high cost of college, even at our public institutions. A bold investment in free tuition would lift the burden of debt off the next generation and provide stable funding and a wave of enthusiasm for our public universities and community colleges.

Throughout the Democratic primaries, Senator Bernie Sanders was enormously popular, and all polls showed that he was in a better position to beat Donald Trump than was any other candidate. UPDATE: WE DID IT! On September 27, Wells Fargo announced that its CEO would forfeit about $41 million in pay, and the executive who directly oversaw the abuse would give up $19 million in compensation. While we're glad some of the money is coming back, it's still only about one-third of the fines Wells Fargo's been charged for their abuse. That means shareholders and pensioners will still have to bear much of the cost of the $185 million in fines Wells Fargo incurred due to their abuses. It shouldn't take a PR disaster like this for companies to claw back bonuses. But the executive in charge of this division at the bank isn’t being fired -- they’re “retiring,” and walking away with nearly $125 million in stock, options, and other compensation! We call on Wells Fargo to claw back the compensation of the executive responsible for millions of phony accounts. We also call on Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf, who is ultimately responsible for the entire bank, to give back the bonuses he earned from May 2011 - July 2015, when this misconduct occurred.
