  • Social Pioneering Monthly charter!
Unfortunately, the Council Board has denied Social Pioneering Monthly from being chartered for Spring 2016 semester because of lack of "membership.” For those who don’t know, Social Pioneering Monthly is a monthly printed zine that is completely composed of student creative and original submissions regarding the relevant social problems of today. There is total freedom of expression and speech and opens up dialogue amongst the students. Its mission is to empower the students and spread awareness about social issues in order to encourage positive social change. We have been chartered for almost two years and have received a lot of positive feedback. Along with several other consequences, the biggest problem is not being able to receive any funding from the school to print the issues. Membership is a vague concept, but with 212 people who signed up for email notifications, 339 Facebook group members, and 121 total submissions in the 10 issues, "lack of membership" does not seem like a fair reason to deny the club's access to funding. The fundamental requirement to be a member of Social Pioneering Monthly is only to agree and support the mission of this club. By signing, you are saving Social Pioneering Monthly, and by doing so you are saving opportunities for people to promote positive social change.

  • Hey, Sen. Toomey! The TPP is wrong for Pennsylvania!
Working Pennsylvanians know what bad trade deals have done to our economy. Senator Toomey should know too. By supporting the Trans-Pacific Partnership, he is once again helping corporate CEOs instead of working people. This secret agreement is a sham for Keystone State communities and will send even more good-paying jobs offshore and threaten our economic livelihoods. We deserve a senator who stands up for opportunities in our state, not corporate interests that drive them away. Send a message to Senator Toomey now—TPP is wrong for Pennsylvania! Sign on now!

  • Tell Congress: Act now to strengthen our democracy
Join the Democracy Awakening movement and take action RIGHT NOW by adding your name to send the below message to Congress – then come join the mobilization April 16-18 in Washington, D.C. To congressional leadership: It’s time to awaken a democracy that is accessible to all and is not beholden to big-money interests. We call on you to support these pieces of legislation: - The Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore and increase protections against voting discrimination. - The Voter Empowerment Act, which would modernize voter registration and ensure equal access to voting for all. -The Democracy For All Amendment, which would overturn U.S. Supreme Court decisions like Citizens United and limit the undue influence of money in politics. -The Government By the People Act/Fair Elections Now Act, which would amplify small contributions from everyday Americans. And we call on the U.S. Senate to fulfill its constitutional obligation to give proper consideration to a Supreme Court nominee, including timely hearings and a vote by the full Senate. PETITION BACKGROUND Wealthy special interests are flooding our elections with unlimited, often secret money that threatens to drown out the voice of the people. Voter suppression – targeting communities of color, students, and low-income Americans – is running rampant. Yet Congress sits twiddling its thumbs. Now, the Senate is even blocking the simple fair consideration of a Supreme Court nominee. It’s time to demand action! Threats to our democracy – like the Supreme Court’s decisions in Citizens United v. FEC, which helped unleash unlimited big money in our elections, and Shelby County v. Holder, which gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act – can be overcome if Congress acts. But Congress has repeatedly thwarted the will of the people and balked on passing popular measures to address these challenges. That’s why the entire pro-democracy movement is coming together in our nation’s capital this spring, from April 16-18, for a Democracy Awakening to demand that every voice be heard and every vote count. Sign to send the above message to Congress, and continue to stay informed about the Democracy Awakening. We need you in this movement.

  • Save the Marcel Breuer designed Atlanta-Fulton Central Library and Library Headquarters Building,...
Not only is the Central Library Marcel Breuer's final building, but it's considered one of his finest by architects and scholars. Opened in 1980, the Central Library is one of the best examples of late Modernist Architecture. It is the result of an era in which Atlanta emerged as an international center for culture and business. Breuer's Central Library, along with John Portman's Peachtree Plaza Hotel and Richard Meir's High Museum, among other projects, were built not only to serve the people of Atlanta, but to be an expression of the city's unique energy, vitality and sophistication, a role the library continues to play to this day. Preserving the Central Library will ensure that future Atlantans and visitors can experience an important piece of art in the museum of architecture that is our city. Renaming the building for its architect would emphasize Atlanta's reputation as an international center for business, culture and architecture by honoring one of the world's great architects.

  • Raise the Wage, West Hollywood
We are the West Hollywood Action Committee (WHAC), and we are here to inform you of an up and coming action by the West Hollywood City Council to discuss raising the minimum wage to $15 during the next meeting on Monday the 21st at 6:30 P.M. Like you, we believe current starvation wages are unacceptable in our prosperous, progressive city and pledge to ensure that our business community affords its workers a livable wage in an expedient time frame as unsustainable income inequality is increasing. As you know, a growing movement to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour has found victories in communities throughout the United States, and the results have been positive. It is long overdue for West Hollywood to join this movement. Our own Mayor Lindsey Horvath, along with Councilmember John Heilman, were elected after successfully campaigning for a liveable wage. While it’s clear our community is supportive, we’re left with three other council members as undecided voters. We need your help to convince them to join cities across the country in adopting a living wage before the Council meeting this Monday, the 21st. West Hollywood prides itself on being a location where ‘we can live, work, and play’. In the attempt to deny a livable wage, our community makes the “live” part of that slogan an unobtainable goal. Your support of low-wage workers will directly impact us all. The irony of this discussions’ timing in Women’s History Month should not be overlooked. Women have been the most exploited and hit hardest by the failure of the business community to care for their workers. March 25th marks the 105th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, where a majority of female factory workers lost their lives from a horrendous accident caused by dangerous working conditions. International Women’s Day, March 8th, was originally a call to action by women workers to demand progress in the workplace. Almost 150 years later, we stand on the shoulders of giants and continue working towards this reality. If you agree that West Hollywood deserves to be a city that provides a livable wage to all our workers and encourages economic diversity, then we need you to get active as City Council will soon be making their own decision. Public statements will directly impact this issue -- your participation in the conversation as a supporter is critical. Join us at the West Hollywood City Council meeting on Monday, March 21st, at 6:30 PM and please write or call the City Council members directly through their contact information. We are available to assist in letter writing or crafting a public statement of support. If you would like to sign on as an organization or business, please let us know! Thank you for your support and action on this issue. For a diverse and inclusive West Hollywood, West Hollywood Action Committee [email protected] Keep up-to-date with this and other issues in West Hollywood on Facebook.

  • Bill Bryant Needs To Dump Trump!
Nationally, numerous Republicans--from the governor of Massachusetts to a Senator from Nebraska and many more in between--have pledged that they will not support Donald Trump if he is the nominee for the Republican Party. We need to know that our Republican candidate for governor here in Washington does not support the racism, bigotry, and awful ideas of Donald Trump.

  • Maryland Assembly: Enact a Strong and Inclusive Automatic Voter Registration Law
This week, the Maryland General Assembly is moving forward on legislation that would allow state agencies to use information that they already collect—age, address, and other relevant data—to determine whether individuals are eligible to vote and then add them to the voter rolls unless they decline to be registered. The potential impact on the electorate is huge: over 500,000 new voters could be added to the voter rolls, making it easier for them to participate in the electoral process. Only a few weeks are left to ensure that Maryland lawmakers put forth the strongest Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) program possible. There are a few different models being debated, and we are urging legislators to have the courage to adopt the model that is most expansive and inclusive, especially for those groups of eligible voters most often unaccounted for young people, lower-income people, and people of color. Maryland’s voting system is currently outdated, leaving over half a million residents voiceless during each election cycle. This session, Maryland can make it clear that the right to vote, much like the right to free speech, should have no impediment. With a comprehensive AVR system, Marylanders would enjoy a modernized process that saves money, is secure and accurate, and protects the fundamental right of every eligible citizen to participate in our democracy.
