Nine more Upstate New York Dairy Farms have lost their contract due to low demand for milk in and around the surrounding states. This is not only a local problem, but a statewide issue. With all the 'farm to table' fame sweeping the restaurant and food industries, saving our family farms should be top priority. These century-old family-run farms will have to sell off cattle and close their operation if a new market is not found quickly. The farmers already live month-to-month just waiting to find out what price they will get for their hard-labored milk production. We ask our representative to get involved and help out the local farm reps find a solution so we don't lose this vital link to our local dairy production.

If we must stop wasting water, the big companies should also!

I'm a single Mom. I live in a "city" in New Hampshire. We are not in a metro here. The New Hampshire Senate passed Senate Bill 116, which would repeal the licensing requirement for carrying a concealed pistol or revolver. In other words, you could carry a concealed weapon without a permit. Sen. Sharon Carson, R-Londonderry, said, "This bill recognizes that the simple act of putting on a coat should not require a permit from the state." Really?! How is that to same? Please sign this to send a message that we want gun safety in New Hampshire--not the opposite! Gov. Hassan must follow through on her commitment to veto this dangerous bill.

A mega real estate project threatens to make Pilsen even more expensive for working families. Danny Solis and the Midwest Jesuits are going for fast track gentrification at 18th and Peoria. An empty lot owned by the Jesuits is under contract to build 500 luxury condos. The Jesuits refuse to talk to the community. Solis already took money from the developers before the election, but didn’t say anything until after the election. Neighbor solidarity has spared Pilsen from gentrification, but the impact of 500 luxury condos on taxes, services and affordability can be devastating to historic residents and working families

For the fifth year in a row, SASD is faced with making deep cuts in our schools because of a broken state funding system that is based on politics rather than on what it actually costs to educate children. In the past 4 years, SASD has eliminated more than 40 full-time teachers and support staff from our schools just to balance the budget. This year we face another massive budget deficit as a result of inadequate state funding. Any additional cuts in programs and services in SASD will have a negative impact on every child in the school district. We need our lawmakers to fix the broken state funding system for education this year —our children cannot afford to lose more from their schools. Our state lawmakers must invest additional state resources into schools so that SASD will will not need to make additional cuts this year and instead be able to begin to restore cuts to programs and services that we have made in recent years and put in place the full set of programs and services our children need.
